Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. La restauration de la création aims to examine the status of animals in ancient and medieval Christian thought following an eschatological perspective, that is, focusing on the question of the salvation of animals according to the divine plan. The volume is articulated in three parts: Biblical sources, in particular the promise of the renewal of creation according to Rm 8, 21; Patristic and medieval doctrinal elaborations on the question; finally, contemporary considerations regarding the status of animals in our societies. Often absent from the current social debate on the subject, the historical Christian perspective which this volume proposes is intended as an original contribution to today’s ongoing reflexion on the legal and ethical status of animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a continuation of two earlier series of chroni cles, Philosophy in the Mid-Century (Firenze 1958/59) and Con temporary Philosophy (Firenze 1968), edited by Raymond Kli bansky. Like the other series, these chronicles provide a survey of important trends in contemporary philosophical discussion from 1966 to 1978. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the last years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and the philosophy of language, the convergence of interest (though not necessarily of opinion) of different traditions upon certain prob lems, and the increasing attention being paid to the history of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems are the most important contributory factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity and may as such be an assistance in renewing the understanding of one's own philosophical problems. The surveys, it is to be hoped, may also help to strengthen the Socratic element of modern philosophy, the dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschajt. So far, four volumes have been prepared for the new series. The present chronicles in Philosophy of Action (Vol. 3) follow upon chronicles in the Philosophy of Language and Philosophical Logic (V 01. 1) and chronicles in the Philosophy of Science (Vol.

Book excerpt: Vistas in Astronomy, Volume 14: Astrometry - Theoretical Astrophysics – Instrumentation – Spectroscopy – Galactic Structure – Galaxies focuses on the methods, processes, and technologies used in astronomy. The selection first discusses the calculations of eclipse and lunar features. The method of computation, symbols that are used, and limit of the shadow path are explained. The book also looks at the spectral classification through seven-color photometry. The effects of chemical composition and interstellar absorption; pseudo-continua of dwarf stars; introduction of linear combinations of color indices; and variable and emission-line stars are discussed. The book also scrutinizes element abundance in O- and early B-stars. The method of fine analysis, observations, and fine analyses of normal and peculiar stars are explained. The book also examines the spiral structure and kinematics of the galaxy from a study of the H II regions. The study of the Doppler-Fizeau effect of the ionized interstellar hydrogen; extension of interference methods to the study of the structure of extragalactic nebulae; and structure and dynamics of barred spiral galaxies are discussed. The selection is a valuable source of information for readers interested in astronomy.

Book excerpt: How do we reconcile the existence of evil in the world with the goodness of an omnipotent God, and how does God's omnipotence relate to people's responsibility for their own salvation or damnation? Sociologist Leszek Kolakowski reflects on a centuries-long debate in Christianity. "Several books a year wrestle with that hoary conundrum, but few so dazzlingly as the Polish philosopher's latest".--Carlin Romano, WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD.
