Book Synopsis The Neanderthal Legacy by : Paul A. Mellars
Download or read book The Neanderthal Legacy written by Paul A. Mellars and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neanderthals populated western Europe from nearly 250,000 to 30,000 years ago when they disappeared from the archaeological record. In turn, populations of anatomically modern humans, Homo sapiens, came to dominate the area. Seeking to understand the nature of this replacement, which has become a hotly debated issue, Paul Mellars brings together an unprecedented amount of information on the behavior of Neanderthals. His comprehensive overview ranges from the evidence of tool manufacture and related patterns of lithic technology, through the issues of subsistence and settlement patterns, to the more controversial evidence for social organization, cognition, and intelligence. Mellars argues that previous attempts to characterize Neanderthal behavior as either "modern" or "ape-like" are both overstatements. We can better comprehend the replacement of Neanderthals, he maintains, by concentrating on the social and demographic structure of Neanderthal populations and on their specific adaptations to the harsh ecological conditions of the last glaciation. Mellars's approach to these issues is grounded firmly in his archaeological evidence. He illustrates the implications of these findings by drawing from the methods of comparative socioecology, primate studies, and Pleistocene paleoecology. The book provides a detailed review of the climatic and environmental background to Neanderthal occupation in Europe, and of the currently topical issues of the behavioral and biological transition from Neanderthal to fully "modern" populations.

Book Synopsis Néandertal, un parent by : Rebecca Wragg Sykes
Download or read book Néandertal, un parent written by Rebecca Wragg Sykes and published by Delachaux et Niestlé. This book was released on 2022-04-29T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Neanderthals by : Stephanie Muller
Download or read book The Neanderthals written by Stephanie Muller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-10-27 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neanderthal is among the most mysterious relatives of Homo sapiens: Was he a dull, club-swinging muscleman, or a being with developed social behaviour and the ability to speak, to plan precisely, and even to develop views on the afterlife? For many, the Neanderthals are an example of primitive humans, but new discoveries suggest that this image needs to be revised. Half a million years ago in Ice Age Europe, there emerged people who managed to cope well with the difficult climate – Neanderthal Man. They formed an organized society, hunted Mammoths, and could make fire. They were able to pass on knowledge; they cared for the old and the handicapped, burying their dead, and placing gifts on their graves. Yet, they became extinct, despite their cultural abilities. This richly illustrated book, written for general audiences, provides a competent look at the history, living conditions, and culture of the Neanderthal.

Book Synopsis Qu'est-il arrivé à l'homme de Neandertal ? by : Bruno Maureille
Download or read book Qu'est-il arrivé à l'homme de Neandertal ? written by Bruno Maureille and published by Le Pommier. This book was released on 2008-09-23T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Origin of Modern Humans and the Impact of Chronometric Dating by : Martin Jim Aitken
Download or read book The Origin of Modern Humans and the Impact of Chronometric Dating written by Martin Jim Aitken and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of papers delivered to The Royal Society in February of 1992 explores the debate over the "single center" hypothesis of human origins versus "multi-regional evolution." Over the last five years there has been growing support for a recent "Out of Africa" origin of modern humans--based on fresh interpretations of the palaeoanthropological and archaeological evidence, new applications of physical dating techniques to important sites, and a greatly increased genetic data base on recent human variation and its geographical patterning. But there has also been a parallel growth of doubts about interpretations of the new evidence from some workers. This book provides a review of recent progress and allows some of these doubts to be aired and discussed. In addition to the editors, the contributors are O. Bar-Yosef, A. M. Bowcock, P. Brown, H. J.
