Book excerpt: This book focuses on the key technologies supporting orbital-angular-momentum multiplexing communication: generation, transmission, detection, and application of vortex beams. A series of methods for generating vortex beams are described and compared in detail. Laguerre-Gaussian and Bessel-Gaussian beams are taken as examples to introduce the transport properties of vortex beams in atmospheric turbulence. The authors show that superposition of vortex beam state, interference, diffraction, and grating can realize the detection of the topological charge of vortex beams. The authors also introduce the application of vortex beams in optical communication and the transmission characteristics of partially coherent vortex beams in atmospheric turbulence. Finally, the authors describe vortex beam information exchange and channel reconstruction.

Book excerpt: This Special Issue on molecular genetics, genomics, and biotechnology in crop plant breeding seeks to encourage the use of the tools currently available. It features nine research papers that address quality traits, grain yield, and mutations by exploring cytoplasmic male sterility, the delicate control of flowering in rice, the removal of anti-nutritional factors, the use and development of new technologies for non-model species marker technology, site-directed mutagenesis and GMO regulation, genomics selection and genome-wide association studies, how to cope with abiotic stress, and an exploration of fruit trees adapted to harsh environments for breeding purposes. A further four papers review the genetics of pre-harvest spouting, readiness for climate-smart crop development, genomic selection in the breeding of cereal crops, and the large numbers of mutants in straw lignin biosynthesis and deposition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights modern strategies and methods to improve oilseed crops in the era of climate change, presenting the latest advances in plant molecular breeding and genomics-driven breeding. Spectacular achievements in the fields of molecular breeding, transgenics and genomics in the last three decades have facilitated revolutionary changes in oilseed- crop-improvement strategies and techniques. Since the genome sequencing of rice, as the first crop plant, in 2002, the genomes of about one dozen oilseed crops have been sequenced and more are to follow. This has made it possible to decipher the exact nucleotide sequence and chromosomal positions of agroeconomic genes. Most importantly, comparative genomics and genotyping-by-sequencing have opened up new vistas for exploring available biodiversity, particularly of wild crop relatives, for identifying useful donor genes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital business has been driving the transformation of underlying IT infrastructure to be more efficient, secure, adaptive, and integrated. Information Technology (IT) must be able to handle the explosive growth of mobile clients and employees. IT also must be able to use enormous amounts of data to provide deep and real-time insights to help achieve the greatest business impact. This IBM® Redbooks® publication addresses the IBM Mainframe, the IBM z13TM. The IBM z13 is the trusted enterprise platform for integrating data, transactions, and insight. A data-centric infrastructure must always be available with a 99.999% or better availability, have flawless data integrity, and be secured from misuse. It needs to be an integrated infrastructure that can support new applications. It needs to have integrated capabilities that can provide new mobile capabilities with real-time analytics delivered by a secure cloud infrastructure. IBM z13 is designed with improved scalability, performance, security, resiliency, availability, and virtualization. The superscalar design allows the z13 to deliver a record level of capacity over the prior IBM z SystemsTM. In its maximum configuration, z13 is powered by up to 141 client characterizable microprocessors (cores) running at 5 GHz. This configuration can run more than 110,000 millions of instructions per second (MIPS) and up to 10 TB of client memory. The IBM z13 Model NE1 is estimated to provide up to 40% more total system capacity than the IBM zEnterprise® EC12 (zEC1) Model HA1. This book provides information about the IBM z13 and its functions, features, and associated software support. Greater detail is offered in areas relevant to technical planning. It is intended for systems engineers, consultants, planners, and anyone who wants to understand the IBM z Systems functions and plan for their usage. It is not intended as an introduction to mainframes. Readers are expected to be generally familiar with existing IBM z Systems technology and terminology.

Book excerpt: Global demand for food is rising as a result of increases in the global population as well as dietary changes. Furthermore, climate change exerts additional pressure on the food supply, adversely affecting sustainable food production. Increased temperatures and drought stresses coupled with the migration of pests limit crop yields and affect their nutritional quality. Many staple crops are unable to adapt to these changing climatic conditions. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nation to end hunger and promote good health and well-being, concerted efforts need to be made to enhance food production while mitigating the effects of climate change through the promotion of climate-smart agricultural practices and the utilization of neglected and underutilized crop species. These species can be highly nutritious and well-adapted to different agroecologies and climatic conditions, meaning that they offer the possibility of improving food and nutritional security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents joint works of members of the software engineering and formal methods communities with representatives from industry, with the goal of establishing the foundations for a common understanding of the needs for more flexibility in model-driven engineering. It is based on the Dagstuhl Seminar 19481 „Composing Model-Based Analysis Tools“, which was held November 24 to 29, 2019, at Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany, where current challenges, their background and concepts to address them were discussed. The book is structured in two parts, and organized around five fundamental core aspects of the subject: (1) the composition of languages, models and analyses; (2) the integration and orchestration of analysis tools; (3) the continual analysis of models; (4) the exploitation of results; and (5) the way to handle uncertainty in model-based developments. After a chapter on foundations and common terminology and a chapter on challenges in the field, one chapter is devoted to each of the above five core aspects in the first part of the book. These core chapters are accompanied by additional case studies in the second part of the book, in which specific tools and experiences are presented in more detail to illustrate the concepts and ideas previously introduced. The book mainly targets researchers in the fields of software engineering and formal methods as well as software engineers from industry with basic familiarity with quality properties, model-driven engineering and analysis tools. From reading the book, researchers will receive an overview of the state-of-the-art and current challenges, research directions, and recent concepts, while practitioners will be interested to learn about concrete tools and practical applications in the context of case studies.
