Book excerpt: This volume features approximately 600 entries that represent the major writers, literary schools, and cultural movements in the history of Mexican literature. A collaborative effort by American, Mexican, and Hispanic scholars, the text contains bibliographical, biographical, and critical material--placing each work cited within its cultural and historical framework. Intended to enrich the English-speaking public's appreciation of the rich diversity of Mexican literature, works are selected on the basis of their contribution toward an understanding of this unique artistry. The dictionary contains entries keyed by author and works, the length of each entry determined by the relative significance of the writer or movement being discussed. Each biographical entry identifies the author's literary contribution by including facts about his or her life and works, a chronological list of works, a supplementary bibliography, and, when appropriate, critical notes. Authors are listed alphabetically and cross-referenced both within the text and the index to facilitate easy access to information. Selected bibliographical entries are also listed alphabetically by author and include both the original title and English translation, publisher, date and place of publication, and number of pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does Argentina’s national anthem describe its citizens as sons of the Inca? Why did patriots in nineteenth-century Chile name a battleship after the Aztec emperor Montezuma? Answers to both questions lie in the tangled knot of ideas that constituted the creole imagination in nineteenth-century Spanish America. Rebecca Earle examines the place of preconquest peoples such as the Aztecs and the Incas within the sense of identity—both personal and national—expressed by Spanish American elites in the first century after independence, a time of intense focus on nation-building. Starting with the anti-Spanish wars of independence in the early nineteenth century, Earle charts the changing importance elite nationalists ascribed to the pre-Columbian past through an analysis of a wide range of sources, including historical writings, poems and novels, postage stamps, constitutions, and public sculpture. This eclectic archive illuminates the nationalist vision of creole elites throughout Spanish America, who in different ways sought to construct meaningful national myths and histories. Traces of these efforts are scattered across nineteenth-century culture; Earle maps the significance of those traces. She also underlines the similarities in the development of nineteenth-century elite nationalism across Spanish America. By offering a comparative study focused on Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Chile, and Ecuador, The Return of the Native illustrates both the common features of elite nation-building and some of the significant variations. The book ends with a consideration of the pro-indigenous indigenista movements that developed in various parts of Spanish America in the early twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leyendas Historicas Mexicanas One of the greatest problems in the world today is that of the latin-american Indian. In nearly every country in Latin America, Indian blood decidedly predominates Over European blood; moreover, as time goes on, the white blood tends to disappear, and the white race to be absorbed by the native peoples. Sooner or later the basal population Of most of Latin America will\come to be a mixed European and Indian race, in which the Indian element will be by far the larger of the two. At the present time as has been the case Since the Span ish conquest the numerical predominance of the Indians does not help them much. The white race, being intellectu ally the stronger, and possessing all the. Wealth and elements of force in society, has held the natives in subjection, and kept them practically voiceless. The civilization of the small group Of whites has been grafted upon the great mass Of natives, and their own elaborate and oftentimes excellent Civilizations destroyed. The languages, the literature, the religion, the arts, and the political institutions Of Europe have been transplanted to the western hemisphere, and have been strongly and tenaciously upheld by a small group Of Europeans living in the midst of a great number of natives}.
