Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This unique book synthesizes the work of leading thinkers of the French School of psychoanalytical projective methods in personality assessment. The French School is a direct successor to Rorschach's and Murray's original approaches using the Rorschach Test and the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT). Underlying this method is the idea of the coexistence of conscious and unconscious processes, of opposite instinctual pairs, and of agents that are ruled by conflicts (Freud). Transitional activity is seen as part of an intermediate space, a mediator space, and bearer of messages between the subject and the clinician (Winnicott). This book brings to life the important contributions of the French School, firstly exploring its theories and methods and then its clinical applications. Detailed case studies from different stages of life examine the psychopathology of everyday life with its severe and disabling states of suffering. Contemporary advances in research and clinical work are presented, and the groundbreaking early work of Nina Rausch de Traubenberg, Vica Shentoub, and Rosine Debray are also critically reread and discussed. Clinical tools adapted for clinicians and researchers in the appendices include a useful schema to facilitate the interpretation of the Rorschach and TAT together, a list of latent solicitations for the TAT, and the current version of the TAT Scoring Grid. This book is essential reading for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, researchers, and students interested in applying psychoanalytical theory to projective methods.

Book excerpt: Despite all research that has been devoted to schizophrenia over the last years, the understanding of the biological bases of the disorder is still fragmentary. Adding to the complexity is the realization that basic cognitive functions are seriously distorted, and that removal of symptoms does not necessarily ameliorate the cognitive deficits. It has also been shown that cognitive deficits can occur before clinical symptoms, in a prodromal phase of the disorder, pointing to a possible causal relationship between cognitive deficits and outbreak of the disorder. However, it is still not possible to diagnose a patient from cognitive deficits alone, or from a combination of clinical symptoms and cognitive deficits, and structural and functional neuroimaging data, although promising, have also not found the way to routine clinical practice. The aim of the Research Topic is therefore to provide an update on research on cognitive and brain imaging research for the understanding of cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. The suggested contributors are all internationally recognized experts in their respective fields. The suggested contributions will cover the field from the use of standardized neuropsychological tests to establish cognitive response profiles in patients with schizophrenia to the use of advanced new techniques for the analysis of brain imaging data.

Book excerpt: The idea for this book developed during the course of several discussions among the editors while we were working together as staff scientists in the laboratories of the Clinical Neuro science Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health. It was a happy coincidence that the three of us, child psychiatrists with predominantly clinical interests, selected a collaborative bench research project involving neurotransmitter receptor characterization and regulation. We appreciated the relevance of our work to child psychiatry and wished for a forum to share the excitement we enjoyed in the laboratory with our clinical colleagues. Moreover, it seemed to us that much of the pharmacological research in child psychiatry proceeded on an empirical basis, often without a compelling neurochemical rationale. This could reflect the paucity of neurochemical data that exists in child psychiatry and the very limited understanding of the pathophysiology in most psychiatric disorders that occur in childhood. Also, we bemoaned the fact that there was a virtual absence of meaningful interchange between clinical investigators in child psychiatry and their colleagues in the neurosciences. We believed that an edited book appealing to clinicians and basic scientists could serve as an initial effort to foster interchange between them. The editors wish to emphasize that this book is viewed as only a beginning in the process of interchange that must take place.
