Book excerpt: A wind tunnel investigation of the effect of aircraft ground deicing/anti-icing fluids on the aerodynamic characteristics of a Boeing 737-200ADV airplane was conducted. The test was carried out in the NASA Lewis Icing Research Tunnel. Fluids tested include a Newtonian deicing fluid, three non-Newtonian anti-icing fluids commercially available during or before 1988, and eight new experimental non-Newtonian fluids developed by four fluid manufacturers. The results show that fluids remain on the wind after liftoff and cause a measurable lift loss and drag increase. These effects are dependent on the high-lift configuration and on the temperature. For a configuration with a high-lift leading-edge device, the fluid effect is largest at the maximum lift condition. The fluid aerodynamic effects are related to the magnitude of the fluid surface roughness, particularly in the first 30 percent chord. The experimental fluids show a significant reduction in aerodynamic effects. Runyan, L. Book excerpt: This document describes methods that are known to have been used by aircraft manufacturers to evaluate aircraft aerodynamic performance and handling effects following application of aircraft ground deicing/anti-icing fluids ("fluids"), as well as methods under development. Guidance and insight based upon those experiences are provided, including: Similarity Analyses Icing Wind Tunnel Tests Flight Tests Computational Fluid Dynamics and other Numerical AnalysesThis document also describes: The history of evaluation of the aerodynamic effects of fluids The effects of fluids on aircraft aerodynamics The testing for aerodynamic acceptability of fluids for SAE and regulatory qualification performed in accordance with AS5900NOTE: This document is applicable for fluids that are "qualified" to (i.e., have passed) the tests and other standards prescribed in AMS1424 or AMS1428 and are properly used in accordance with ARP4737.NOTE: There are topics of potential interest not discussed in this document, such as re-hydrated gel residues - see Reference documents (2.2).CAUTION: The results and conclusions of the various test programs described herein should not be assumed to be universally applicable. This ARP documents methods and processes that may be utilized by aircraft manufacturers (or type certificate holders, researchers, or others) to evaluate the aerodynamic effects of SAE-qualified aircraft ground deicing/anti-icing fluids ("fluids") when applied to specific aircraft.

Book excerpt: The aerodynamic effects of aircraft ground deicing/anti-icing fluids is a topic that has received increasing attention in recent years as the use of these fluids becomes more widespread and sophisticated. An important consideration with respect to the use of these fluids is the effect of residual fluid remaining on the aircraft during the takeoff roll and initial climb. A flight test program to determine these effects on the takeoff and climb performance for two general aviation aircraft was conducted. The flight tests were performed in Topeka, Kansas, and Duluth, Minnesota. Results indicate that the presence of the deicing/anti-icing fluids on the aerodynamic surfaces of the test airplanes can reduce aerodynamic lift and increase liftoff airspeeds. However, the flight test pilots reported no obvious changes in the performances of handling characteristics of the aircraft.
