Book excerpt: This Research Topic is part of the Phenotyping at Plant and Cell Levels: The Quest for Tolerant Crop Development series: Phenotyping at Plant and Cell Levels: The Quest for Tolerant Crop Development This Research Topic aims at accelerating the discovery of crop varieties that are able to withstand environmental stresses, via the use of phenotyping approaches at the plant and cellular levels. Climate change is expected to have a drastic impact on agriculture, notably by impacting water availability, precipitations, temperatures, soil nutrients, and the incidence of diseases and pests. A better use of plant genetic resources and plant breeding are key to tackling this challenge from climate change and for food security. Many landraces and wild relatives of crops are conserved in seed and gene banks. These collections are potentially valuable for breeders, but are presently underexploited. Moreover, the contribution of the soil microbiome to enhance the performance of specific plant genotypes has been overlooked. The aim is to generate crops that are resistant against biotic stress or can tolerate abiotic stress without significant impact on their performance. Current studies in the field of sensor technologies and phenomics are mainly empirically based and do not link the phenotypic parameters to the molecular scale. Similarly, many molecular studies do not correlate their findings to the whole plant phenotype. The quantitative high throughput analysis of crop potential and behavior during stress is a form of Genotype x Environment interaction and is a major bottleneck. We urgently need to identify resilient genotypes and to understand the underlying mechanisms of this resilience. Phenotyping science is quickly developing to characterize plant behavior, it's dynamic dimensions, and to quantify features such as growth and stress resilience, which increasingly permit to link the phenotype to genetic control.

Book excerpt: This collection of studies is published in honor of Professor James A. Sanders, a leading scholar in the fields of the canon of Scripture, textual criticism, and the relationship of the two Testaments. Contributors include leading scholars in these and related fields of study. The studies investigate in what ways the early sacred tradition was interpreted and how this tradition takes new shape in the Jewish and Christian communities of faith. Included are studies of Jesus' understanding of Scripture, Paul's interpretation of Scripture, and the ways in which Scripture was interpreted by the Rabbis. In many instances novel interpretations and new approaches to old problems are offered. Advanced students and veteran scholars will enjoy the many insights and provocative new ideas.

Book excerpt: *A RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK* 'Utterly enthralling - a beautifully-written voyage of discovery that takes us deep into the heart of music-making' Deborah Moggach From the moment she hears Lev's violin for the first time, Helena Attlee is captivated. She is told that it is an Italian instrument, named after its former Russian owner. Eager to discover all she can about its ancestry and the stories contained within its delicate wooden body, she sets out for Cremona, birthplace of the Italian violin. This is the beginning of a beguiling journey whose end she could never have anticipated. Making its way from dusty workshops, through Alpine forests, cool Venetian churches, glittering Florentine courts, and far-flung Russian flea markets, Lev's Violin takes us from the heart of Italian culture to its very furthest reaches. Its story of luthiers and scientists, princes and orphans, musicians, composers, travellers and raconteurs swells to a poignant meditation on the power of objects, stories and music to shape individual lives and to craft entire cultures.

Book excerpt: The design for Quest to Learn, an innovative school in New York City that offers a “game-like” approach to learning. Quest to Learn, an innovative school for grades 6 to 12 in New York City, grew out of the idea that gaming and game design offer a promising new paradigm for curriculum and learning. The designers of Quest to Learn developed an approach to learning that draws from what games do best: drop kids into inquiry-based, complex problem spaces that are built to help players understand how they are doing, what they need to work on, and where to go next. Content is not treated as dry information but as a living resource; students are encouraged to interact with the larger world in ways that feel relevant, exciting, and empowering. Quest to Learn opened in the fall of 2009 with 76 sixth graders. In their first semester, these students learned—among other things—to convert fractions into decimals in order to break a piece of code found in a library book; to use atlases and read maps to create a location guide for a reality television series; and to create video tutorials for a hapless group of fictional inventors. This research and development document outlines the learning framework for the school, making the original design available to others in the field. Elements in development include a detailed curriculum map, a budget, and samples of student and teacher handbooks.

Second only to the United States, these investments make Spain one of the largest markets of foreign direct investment for Latin America. This multidisciplinary volume focuses on the emergence of Spanish multinational enterprises in this region. Furthermore, it analyzes the sociological and political consequences of these investments and exhibits several theoretical and methodological approaches that make the book a useful aid for teaching. It is essential reading for those who want to understand structural reforms, their consequences and the international impact of economic reform.

Book excerpt: In the last 20 years, the cognitive sciences have revealed fresh, surprising, and useful insights into how and why our students learn. Teachers can now draw on psychology and neuroscience research to supplement, reconsider, even overturn our traditions and training. To use this research most wisely, teachers must find our way to an elusive Goldilocks Zone. Instead of resisting all research-based guidance, we should be ready to take it to heart – even when it challenges both our training and conventional wisdom. Instead of accepting all research-based guidance, we should be ready to reject it emphatically – especially the hyped-up edu-fads that exaggerate and misinterpret psychology findings. How can we get this Goldilocks balance “just right”? This book offers a specific, practical quest map to discover just such a balance. By critically examining the source, the research, and ourselves, teachers can develop the skills necessary to be effective research skeptics. Written by a teacher with 18 years in the classroom – and 13 years studying neuroscience and psychology – The Goldilocks Map transforms brain research from a daunting monologue into an approachable, exciting, and lively conversation.
