Book excerpt: The Texts @ Contexts series gathers scholarly voices from diverse contexts and social locations to bring new or unfamiliar facets of biblical texts to light. Leviticus and Numbers focuses attention on practices and ideals of behavior in community, from mourning and diet to marriages licit and transgressive, examining all of these from a variety of global perspectives and postcolonial and feminist methods. How do we deal with the apparent cultural distances between ourselves and these ancient writings; what can we learn from their visions of human dwelling on the earth? Like other volumes in the Texts @ Contexts series, these essays de-center the often homogeneous first-world orientation of much biblical scholarship and open up new possibilities for discovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many good intentions to read the entire Bible have foundered on the rocks of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Do these books have literary qualities? How does the storyteller tell the story? In Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Stephen Sherwood, C.M.F., applies the tools of narrative criticism to look for the literary qualities of these three biblical books. Sherwood identifies the narrative art of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy not only in such colorful stories as the Sabbath breaker, the threat from Sihon and Og, the deaths of Nadab and Abihu, the story of Balaam, the bronze serpent, Aaron's rod, Miriam's leprosy, and the water from the rock, but also through the extended discourses made by characters in the story. Sherwood studies the voices of several of these characters: the narrator, the Lord, Moses, Aaron, the Israelites, Balaam and Barak, and others, to see how each is characterized" by their words and actions. In Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Sherwood also shows how each of the three books has its own characteristics as part of a larger story. Leviticus deals mainly with divine speech. Numbers also contains divine speech but the voices of Moses and the narrator are more recurrent. Deuteronomy is presented in the form of a farewell speech of Moses before his death. The story is then retold from Moses' point of view, with different emphases and even some changes. Chapters are *General Introduction, - *Leviticus, - *Numbers, - and *Deuteronomy. - Each chapter contains a general introduction to a biblical book which is followed by notes which make observations on the literary qualities of smaller units of each book.

Book excerpt: The contrast in appreciation of Leviticus and Numbers by the synagogue on the one hand, and by the church on the other, is little short of astonishing. The former has considered it crucial to an understanding of God and of the nature of the "chosen people" (Israel). The latter has usually reduced it to allegory or as a mere historical record of Israelite religion. In this new volume of the groundbreaking Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary series, Hebrew Bible scholar Lloyd R. Bailey examines these often overlooked or underappreciated books of Moses in the contexts of both the Jewish and Christian traditions.Written by accomplished scholars with all students of Scripture in mind, this innovative new commentary series is designed to make quality Bible study more accessible. Pastors, professors and students of Scripture are discovering that this commentary is a wonderful new tool for enhancing interpretation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its inception the church has always had a Bible—the Jewish Scriptures. But Christians have not read these Scriptures in the same way the Jews did. They have read them in the light of what God did in Jesus the Christ. Thus the Jewish Scriptures became for Christian readers the Old Testament. This Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume on Exodus through Deuteronomy bears ample witness to this new way of reading these ancient texts. Among the earliest interpreters whose works remain extant is Origen, who virtually single-handedly assured the Old Testament a permanent place within the Christian church through his extensive commentary and reflection. His twenty-seventh homily on Numbers is particularly noteworthy for his interpretation of the forty-two stopping places in the desert wanderings as the forty-two stages of growth in the spiritual life. Among Greek-speaking interpreters, this current volume draws widely on John Chrysostom, Clement of Alexandria, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Cyril of Alexandria, Theodoret of Cyr, and John of Damascus. Among Latin-speaking interpreters, quotations from Augustine, Ambrose, Jerome, Paterius, Caesarius of Arles, Cassiodorus, and Isidore are found in abundance. Ephrem and Aphrahat are represented among Syriac speakers. Numerous other interpreters are present from each grouping. Varied in texture and nuance, the interpretations included in this volume display a treasure house of ancient wisdom, some appearing here in English translation for the first time, speaking with eloquence and intellectual acumen to the church today.

Book excerpt: The Bible is simply a love letter compiled into sixty-six books and written over a period ofsixteen hundred years by more than forty authors living on three continents. Although theauthors came from different backgrounds, there is one message, one theme, one thread that runs throughout the entire Bible from the first book, Genesis, to the last book, Revelation. That message is God's redeeming love for mankind--a message that is as relevant for us today as it was two thousand years ago.The Pentateuch was most likely written by one man, Moses. It consists of the books ofGenesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy and is also known as the Law,the Torah (Hebrew for "Law"), or the Law of Moses. These books are the first fivebooks of the seventeen Historical Books of the Old Testament and are foundationalfor the rest of the Bible. One book easily flows into another, developing biblical historyfrom Creation to about 1500 BC as well as the history of Israel from the call ofAbraham through the death of Moses. Here you will meet Adam, Noah, Abraham,Isaac, Jacob and his twelve sons, Moses, Aaron, and Joshua. You will travel from theGarden of Eden to Ur, Haran, Canaan, and Egypt, through the Red Sea, and on toMount Sinai. But the center of every book in The Pentateuch is God Almighty. Your adventure withHim will begin in the first sentence of the first book, and from there on it is a wild rideas He intervenes on behalf of men and women throughout history. You will witness Hisawesome power in Genesis, His desire to bring His children into liberty in Exodus, Hisperfect holiness in Leviticus, His justice in Numbers, and His faithfulness inDeuteronomy. You will be humbled by His mercy, awed by His compassion, frightenedby His wrath, and wooed by His loving-kindness. And in every book you will come tosee that Jesus Christ is concealed, ready to be revealed in the New Testament

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me." (John 5:46) Jesus's declaration frames this study of four books of the Pentateuch—Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy—as we discover the many ways that Moses wrote about Christ. Seasoned Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie shows that the Bible's story from beginning to end is the story of the Lamb—the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Over ten weeks of guided personal bible study, relevant teaching, and group discussion, you will see the person and work of Christ: in the person of Moses as a great deliverer, mediator, and prophet; in the manna, the water from the rock, and the bronze serpent on the pole; and in the priesthood, tabernacle, and sacrificial system. Gain a fresh perspective on the story of Israel's deliverance and journey, a broader understanding of Jesus as the fulfillment of Scripture, and much more, when you join with Nancy on this incredible journey to see Jesus in the Old Testament! * A leader's guide is available as a free download at SeeingJesusInTheOldTestament.com and a supplemental DVD of Nancy's teaching is also available for purchase.
