Book excerpt: Overall, 40 percent of crashes in the United States occur at intersections; a total of 57 percent of fatalities from 1997–2004 occurred at stop-controlled intersections, of which 61 percent occurred in rural areas. Factors believed to contribute to these incidents include inadequate surveillance, failure to obey/yield, driver inattention, and speed. This study used naturalistic driving data collected under the second Strategic Highway Research Program to explore drivers’ brake and glance patterns on approach to rural high-speed, stop-controlled intersections from the minor route. Brake distance was found to be sufficiently predicted by brake speed (the speed at which the driver was moving upon initial brake activation). At an average brake speed of 61.7 mi/h, participants first applied the brakes at an average distance of 328.7 ft from the intersection. Older participants (ages 45 to 84) applied the brakes farther upstream, especially at higher speeds, than their younger counterparts (ages 18 to 44). The probability of making a complete stop was found to vary significantly with average annual mileage (AAM) and expressed risk associated with performing rolling stops. Participants with higher AAM were found more likely to make complete stops. Intersection approaches were divided into five 98.4-ft segments, and total glance duration to eight regions of interest (ROIs) within each segment were analyzed. Drivers spent nearly the entire approach glancing to the forward ROI until they were 98.4 ft from the intersection. Between 0 and 98.4 ft, drivers spent an average of 5.1 s scanning the intersecting roadway; a total of 86.5 percent of all intersection scanning occurred in the last 98.4 ft of the approach. A novel difference was found among intersection crossings according to the type of stop performed. Drivers who came to a complete (0 mi/h) stop spent just 39.2 percent of their prestop time scanning the intersection, while rolling stoppers spent 74.5 percent. This suggests that complete stoppers focus on getting to the intersection and then stop, scan, and proceed, whereas rolling stoppers scan the intersection prior to arrival so that they can proceed at higher speeds while maintaining a perception of safety.

Traffic analysis requires accurate representations of driving behavior—how different drivers drive and how the same driver adjusts to different driving scenarios—for the realistic development of predictive models. Heterogeneity in driving behavior impacts the capacity of the transportation network; therefore, it is crucial to account for this heterogeneity when planning, assessing alternatives, and managing real-time roadway operations. The recent availability of trajectory-level driving data offers researchers and practitioners an unprecedented opportunity to improve the depiction of driving behavior in microsimulation models. A review of literature clearly demonstrates a foundation for research in heterogeneous driving behaviors, yet countless unanswered questions and uninvestigated hypotheses remain. This dissertation is designed to connect the dots between the complex layers of theory, high resolution driving data, and behavioral analytics necessary for successful behavioral research. Starting with the formation of a hypothesis, this dissertation walks through the required steps for collecting data, processing those data, and analyzing driving behavior. At each pivotal point, contributions are made to bridge the gaps between the crucial elements of research, aspiring to add value to current and future studies. These contributions include (i) trajectory-level data sufficiency guidance, (ii) radar-vision data processing algorithms for instrumented vehicle data, (iii) recommendations for transparent and systematic procedures to calibrate car-following models, (iv) a trajectory simulation validation methodology for interpretation and validation of calibration results, and (v) an empirical car-following model developed from an Artificial Neural Network. Ultimately, an analytic framework is developed from these contributions and applied to trajectory-level data available through the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study to investigate the influence of weather conditions on driving behavior. This case study exemplifies the impact that complex human behaviors have in traffic flow theory and the importance of using trajectory-level data to accurately calibrate driving behavior used in microsimulation models.

Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of five published or presented papers in which addresses different gaps in the knowledge by presenting innovative methods to identify and analyze weather-related naturalistic driving data to better understand driver behavior and performance in adverse weather conditions. An innovative methodology introduced in Chapter 4 helped to effectively identify weather-related trips in real-time using vehicle wiper status and other complementary methodologies introduced in chapter 5 helped to identify naturalistic driving weather-related trips using external weather data sources. In addition, a semi-automated data reduction procedure was developed and introduced in chapter 5 to process raw trip data files into a format that further analyses and modeling techniques could be easily applied. The novel approaches developed in this dissertation for NDS trip acquisition and reduction could be extended to other naturalistic driving studies worldwide. In addition to the contributions in data extraction and reduction, preliminary analysis as well as advanced modeling techniques were utilized in this study. These analyses were used to explain the relationship between different levels of speed selection/lane keeping behaviors and a set of contributing factors including roadway characteristics, environmental and traffic conditions and driver demographics on a trajectory level. These modeling techniques ranged from common parametric approaches such as binary logistic regression and ordinal logistic/probit regression models to a more advanced non-parametric/data mining modeling techniques such as Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). The results from this study suggest that both parametric and non-parametric modeling approaches are important to analyze driver behavior and performance. In fact, this study attempted to maximize the benefits out of the advantages of parametric models, such as the ability of interpreting the marginal effects of various risk factors, as well as the advantages of using non-parametric models, including but not limited to the ability of providing high prediction accuracy, handling of missing values automatically, and their capability of handling large number of explanatory variables in a timely manner, which might be extremely beneficial specifically for assessing traffic operations and safety in real-time considering weather and traffic data to be directly fed into the model. The results of the developed speed selection models revealed that among various adverse weather conditions, drivers were more likely to reduce their speed in snowy weather conditions compared to other adverse weather conditions. Specifically, the odds of drivers reducing their speed were 9.29 times higher in snowy weather conditions, followed by rain and fog with 1.55 and 1.29 times, respectively (compared to clear conditions). In addition, variable importance analysis using CART method revealed that weather conditions, traffic conditions, and posted speed limit are the three most important variables affecting driver speed selection behavior. In addition, the results of the developed lane-keeping models revealed that drivers in heavy rain conditions were 3.95 times more likely to have a worse lane-keeping performance compared to clear weather conditions. The developed speed selection model is a key example of a derived mechanism by which the SHRP2 database can be leveraged to improve Weather Responsive Traffic Management (WRTM) strategies directly. Moreover, the results may shed some light on driver lane keeping behavior at a trajectory level. Moreover, a better understanding of driver lane-keeping behavior might help in developing better Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems. Evaluating driver behavior and performance under the influence of reduced visibility due to adverse weather conditions is extremely important to develop safe driving strategies, including Variable Speed Limits (VSL). Many roadways across the U.S. currently have weather-based VSL systems to ensure safe driving environments during adverse weather. Current VSL systems mainly collect traffic information from external sources, including inductive loop detector, overhead radars and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV). However, human factors especially driver behavior and performance such as selection of speed and acceleration/deceleration behaviors during adverse weather are neglected due to the lack of appropriate driver data. The findings from this study indicated that the SHRP2NDS data could be effectively utilized to identify trips in adverse weather conditions and to assess the impacts of adverse weather on driver behavior and performance. With the evolution of connected vehicles, Machine Vision and other real-time weather social crowd sources such as WeatherCloud®, more accurate real-time data similar to the NDS data will be available in the near future. This study provided early insights into using similar data collected from NDS.

Book excerpt: The negative impact of reduced visibility on driver performance has been recognized as one of the major causes of motor vehicle crashes. Proper assessment of real-time visibility condition is therefore crucial for safe driving, especially during adverse weather including fog. Although many studies have investigated various visibility detection methods, most of them had several limitations and did not provide reliable real-time prediction capabilities. This study describes some unique and advanced data mining techniques for detecting real-time fog and visibility conditions utilizing video data from the Second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) dataset. In this study, Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) features were extracted and significant texture features including Contrast, Correlation, Energy, and Homogeneity were selected as classification parameters for Support Vector Machine (SVM) and K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN) classifiers. In addition, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) Deep Learning technique was also examined for fog detection. Although the analysis was done initially on a dataset consisted of binary weather conditions including clear and fog, it has been successfully extended to include different levels of fog, i.e., near fog and distant fog. The classifications were conducted to leverage the SHRP2 NDS data by adding additional trajectory-level weather and visibility variables to the original data in an automated fashion. While the prediction accuracy of the first analysis was approximately 92% and 91% for the SVM and K-NN classifier, respectively, the CNN Deep Learning technique produced a far better classification results with an accuracy close to 99%. As expected, the prediction accuracy of the second analysis with more refined weather categories was relatively less compared to the first analysis where the SVM and the K-NN classifier produced an accuracy of about 89% and 88% respectively, and the CNN provided an accuracy of about 97%. The methods developed in this study are based on a single in-vehicle camera and can be used to detect daytime fog in real-time. This thesis also utilized the data from the SHRP2 NDS database to understand driver behavior in general and speed selection in particular during clear and foggy weather conditions. In this study, a preliminary analysis, and an ordered logit model were developed to evaluate driver speed behavior in fog and clear weather conditions. The preliminary analysis showed a Weibull speed distribution in heavy fog under free-flow conditions while the speeds were normally distributed in clear weather for the matching dataset (i.e., same driver, vehicle, route, and traffic state). Descriptive analysis indicated about 10% reduction in speed during near fog and about 3% reduction in speed during distant fog. The calibrated speed selection model found weather-related factors including fog, visibility, and surface conditions to have a significant impact on driver speed selection. For instance, results showed that drivers were more likely to select significantly lower speeds during foggy weather conditions. More specifically, the odds of drivers reducing their speeds from the posted speed limit were 1.31 and 1.28 times higher for drivers traveling in near fog and distant fog, respectively, compared to drivers who were driving in clear weather conditions. The results from this study will unlock new horizons and potentials in conducting adverse weather-related research utilizing the SHRP2 NDS data. The advanced Machine and Deep Learning techniques introduced in this study could be extended to other weather and surface conditions. Moreover, the findings from this study can also be incorporated into Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Connected Variable Speed Limit (VSL) algorithms to improve their reliability and accuracy.
