Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is prevalent among Americans, particularly in older citizens, so much so that it poses a major threat to public health. My research examined two potential reasons for low levels of activity in older adults grounded in motivation: first, older adults may be inactive because they do not accrue benefits in valued domains, and second, interventions may be ineffective because they do not align with older adults' goals. Reasoning from socioemotional selectivity theory, I predicted that older adults would be motivated to engage in physical activity to the extent that it was perceived and experienced as an emotionally meaningful or satisfying activity. I posited that if older adults do not experience meaningful benefits from physical activity in the short-term, they are unlikely to maintain physical activity. To examine this possibility, I designed Studies 1 and 2 to test how physical activity influences emotional experience and cognitive performance in younger and older adults, first in a controlled, experimental setting (Study 1), then in daily life (Study 2). Findings from both studies suggest that older and younger adults experience comparably potent benefits from physical activity. I reasoned from these findings that experiencing benefits from physical activity could support maintenance of physical activity in older adults, and, therefore, initiation of physical activity, rather than maintenance, may be a key barrier to increasing physical activity in older adults. Because interventions aimed at initiating physical activity have met with limited success, particularly in older adults, the second aim of this research was to test whether interventions could be tailored to motivate younger and older adults to be more active. In Studies 3 and 4, I approached this question using values affirmation (Study 3) and an incentives framework (Study 4), in order to test the effects of reducing threat surrounding physical activity participation through socioemotional goals, and the efficacy of incentivizing physical activity through socioemotional goals. Findings from Study 3 indicated that older and younger adults responded positively and comparably to an intervention that emphasized personal values to promote physical activity. Similarly, findings from Study 4 indicated that older adults were comparably responsive to goal-based incentives as younger adults, although, once initiated, older adults better maintained the increase in physical activity relative to younger adults. Together, findings from these four studies suggest that older adults may benefit from goals-based interventions aimed at promoting and maintaining physical activity.

This lack of sustained benefits is thought to be partially the result of poor adherence to the prescribed home exercise program to be continued once therapy is completed. Most of what is known about older adults' adherence to physical therapy and home exercise comes from research seeking to identify and understand predictors of adherence, rather than trying to enhance adherence explicitly. The purpose of this study was to test a theoretically-grounded approach to promoting adherence to home exercise programs in older adults following discharge from physical therapy. Sixty older adults in a program of physical therapy received one of two print messages promoting adherence to home exercise. The content of the messages were informed by the goal-specific tenets of socioemotional selectivity theory - one message described the emotional and meaningful benefits of home exercise (i.e., time with loved ones, independence) and one message described the physiological benefits (i.e., balance, strength). Adherence to home exercise was measured two weeks after participants were discharged from physical therapy. There was not a significant difference in adherence between the participants receiving either message, however those who received the message describing the emotional and meaningful benefits of exercise performed somewhat more exercises outside of their home exercise program than participants who received the message describing the physiological benefits (p = .06). The applied value of socioemotional selectivity theory should continue to be investigated in the realm of health behavior change, particularly when it comes to health message tailoring. This study may reveal only the 'tip of the ice berg' in that it was the first to empirically test an intervention targeting post-physical therapy home exercise, as well as the first to integrate socioemotional selectivity theory into persuasive health messages used in a real-world setting. Future research is needed to push each of these fruitful areas forward.

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of detailed feedback (FB) to increase OA time spent in MVPA compared to a verbal recommendation (VREC) and control (CON) group. METHODS: Sixty-eight women recruited from senior-based programs for an 8-wk, 3-intervention arm trial, were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups: VREC, FB, and CON. Individuals meeting ACSM recommendations were excluded. All participants wore an accelerometer (ACCEL) to monitor 8 weeks of daily physical activity. VREC were read/received ACSM recommendations similar to mass media dialogue promoting MVPA and asked to meet recommendations by the 8-wk point. FB walked 3 d/wk on a monitored indoor walking track, and on their own 2 d/wk. FB received all VREC procedures, received MVPA walking instruction (HR monitored) and weekly ACCEL feedback (time spent in MVPA and MVPA goals for the next wk). CON continued their normal activities. RESULTS: Differences were noted between all 3 groups at Week 4 (p ≤ 0.05) and Week 8 (p ≤ 0.05). This reflects improvement in both the FB and VREC as well as a greater improvement by the FB compared to VREC. FB improved 264% over 8 weeks. VREC improved 85% from baseline to Week 8. There was no change in the CON. Difference between groups with respect to meeting ACSM recommendations (yes/no) were noted (, p 9́Þ 0.01). The only group to improve was FB. CONCLUSIONS: Providing simple feedback significantly improved time spent in moderate intensity physical activity by the 4th week. Based on the results of this study, which indicate that the detailed feedback is more effective than recommendation alone, this walking program should be implemented by healthcare providers as a means to improve the amount of moderate intensity physical activity engaged in by older adults.

Considering the popularity of the activity, walking-related physical activity should be a focus of health promotion campaigns among the adult population. Rhodes and Nigg (2011) suggested that employing theory-based interventions lead to a better understanding of physical activity behavior and to the development of effective interventions. The goal of this project is to provide an effective intervention strategy using goal-setting theory. Two studies were conducted to examine the effectiveness of goal-setting strategies to increase physical activity behavior among middle-aged adults and to identify the specific mechanisms of goal-setting theory. The first study examined the effects of different degrees of specific and difficult step goals on increasing physical activity, using a pedometer. A total of 96 adults were randomly assigned into five different goal groups: (a) easy, (b) difficult, (c) improbable, (d) do-your-best, and (e) no goal group. A 2 x 5 (time by group) repeated measures ANOVA revealed that there were significant time by group interactions. The increases in step counts in the difficult and improbable goal groups were greater than the remaining groups. In addition, there were no significant differences on the rates of goal achievement among specific and difficult goal groups. These findings suggest that when people have higher goals, they are more likely to increase their levels of physical activity. Future studies should examine the long-term effects of goal setting on physical activity. The second study examined the effects of goal commitment on physical activity promotion. A total of 69 adults were randomly assigned into different goal groups and their performances were compared. Participants' level of goal commitment was collected by survey. Results from multiple regression analyses showed that goal and goal commitment had a direct effect on increasing daily step count. However, there was no evidence for the moderating effect of goal commitment on the relationship between goals and performance. Results of this study suggest that goal setting and goal commitment are important predictors of change in physical activity levels. The results of this project suggest that physical activity promotion programs should use specific and difficult goals to increase a person's performance rather than vague and easily achievable goals. Also, it is important that participants make a commitment to achieve the goal. Future studies should examine the strategies for increasing goal commitment.

Increased physical activity is associated with health benefits such as weight management, improved muscle strength, cardiovascular health, and longevity. The present study aimed to replicate previous goal setting and feedback research to increase the weekly walking or running distance for six adults. This study also assessed the efficacy of the intervention for promoting maintenance of physical activity in a 3-month follow- up assessment. The participants in this study were six healthy adults recruited from a Midwest university and expressed interest in increasing their overall activity levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study utilized a multiple baseline across participants design and revealed that all participants increased their mean weekly distance in the intervention phase following baseline. Furthermore, one participant maintained an increased weekly distance following the conclusion of the intervention. Implications and suggestions for future research are addressed.
