Book Synopsis L'Europe puissance, mythes et réalités by : Bastien Nivet
Download or read book L'Europe puissance, mythes et réalités written by Bastien Nivet and published by Presses universitaires de Bordeaux. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis A Philosophy of Political Myth by : Chiara Bottici
Download or read book A Philosophy of Political Myth written by Chiara Bottici and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, originally published in 2007, Chiara Bottici argues for a philosophical understanding of political myth. Bottici demonstrates that myth is a process, one of continuous work on a basic narrative pattern that responds to a need for significance. Human beings need meaning in order to master the world they live in, but they also need significance in order to live in a world that is less indifferent to them. This is particularly true in the realm of politics. Political myths are narratives through which we orient ourselves, and act and feel about our political world. Bottici shows that in order to come to terms with contemporary phenomena, such as the clash between civilizations, we need a Copernican revolution in political philosophy. If we want to save reason, we need to look at it from the standpoint of myth.

The period discussed spans from January 1945, with the end of Hitler's last hope (the Ardennes counter-offensive), to the Japanese surrender in mid-August. The situation for the Axis is presented by German, Italian, and Japanese historians, and the «Allied» responses are by British, French, Russian, American, Slovene, and New Zealand scholars. The foreword covers commemorative events in Germany, Italy, and Japan in the period 1990-1999.
Book Synopsis Britain, France and the Decolonization of Africa by : Andrew W.M. Smith
Download or read book Britain, France and the Decolonization of Africa written by Andrew W.M. Smith and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at decolonization in the conditional tense, this volume teases out the complex and uncertain ends of British and French empire in Africa during the period of ‘late colonial shift’ after 1945. Rather than view decolonization as an inevitable process, the contributors together explore the crucial historical moments in which change was negotiated, compromises were made, and debates were staged. Three core themes guide the analysis: development, contingency and entanglement. The chapters consider the ways in which decolonization was governed and moderated by concerns about development and profit. A complementary focus on contingency allows deeper consideration of how colonial powers planned for ‘colonial futures’, and how divergent voices greeted the end of empire. Thinking about entanglements likewise stresses both the connections that existed between the British and French empires in Africa, and those that endured beyond the formal transfer of power.
