Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentia- tion Antigens was held in Boston, September 17-20, 1984. More than 350 people interested in leukocyte differentiation agreed to exchange reagents and participate in this joint venture. All in all, in excess of 400 antibodies directed against surface structures on T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and myeloid-hematopoietic stem cells were characterized. Because of the enormous quantity of serologic, biochemical, and functional data, Leuko- cyte Typing II has been divided into three volumes. These books represent the written results of workshop participants. They should be helpful to both researchers and clinicians involved in scientific endeavors dealing with these broad fields of immunobiology. To those who delve into the various sections of the volumes, it will become evident that the work speaks for itself. I am deeply indebted to the section editors, Barton F. Haynes, Volume 1, Human T Lymphocytes, Lee M. Nadler, Volume 2, Human B Lympho- cytes, and Irwin D.Bernstein, Volume 3, Human Myeloid and Hemato- poietic Cells for their major contributions in planning, executing, and summarizing the workshop, as well as council members John Hansen, Alain Bernard, Laurence Boumsell, Walter Knapp, Andrew McMichael, Cesar Milstein, and Stuart F. Schlossman. I would also like to thank the National Institutes of Health, World Health Organization, and Interna- tional Union of Immunological Societies for making this meeting possible.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of all aspects of childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, from basic biology to supportive care. It offers new insights into the genetic pre-disposition to the condition and discusses how response to early therapy and its basic biology are utilized to develop new prognostic stratification systems and target therapy. Readers will learn about current treatment and outcomes, such as immunotherapy and targeted therapy approaches. Supportive care and management of the condition in resource poor countries are also discussed in detail. This is an indispensable guide for research and laboratory scientists, pediatric hematologists as well as specialist nurses involved in the care of childhood leukemia.

Book excerpt: This volume documents our growing understanding of the human major histocompatibility complex. The application of this information is ever more important as the limits of transplantation continue to be reduced, including the recent success of bone marrow transplantation between unrelated but closely matched individuals. In addition, the need to transfuse platelets in the face of immunologic barriers continues to challenge transfusion services. Thus, the serologic information summarized in this volume is essential for optimal patient care. At the same time, recombinant DNA technology has led to a revolution in our understanding of many aspects of basic biology. Among the advances has been the initial characterization of the structure of some HLA loci. While this will ultimately improve clinical services, constant reference to serologic data is essential so that the powerful new techniques can be applied in the most effective ways. The timing of the First Red Cross International Histocompatibility Workshop is fortunate as it brings together experts from around the world to address the state of the art. We are all grateful to Dr. John Lee and his colleagues for organizing the workshop, and for bringing together in this volume the material to be presented in Beijing during October 17-23, 1990. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microcirculation is highly responsive to, and a vital participant in, the inflammatory response. All segments of the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) exhibit characteristic phenotypic changes during inflammation that appear to be directed toward enhancing the delivery of inflammatory cells to the injured/infected tissue, isolating the region from healthy tissue and the systemic circulation, and setting the stage for tissue repair and regeneration. The best characterized responses of the microcirculation to inflammation include impaired vasomotor function, reduced capillary perfusion, adhesion of leukocytes and platelets, activation of the coagulation cascade, and enhanced thrombosis, increased vascular permeability, and an increase in the rate of proliferation of blood and lymphatic vessels. A variety of cells that normally circulate in blood (leukocytes, platelets) or reside within the vessel wall (endothelial cells, pericytes) or in the perivascular space (mast cells, macrophages) are activated in response to inflammation. The activation products and chemical mediators released from these cells act through different well-characterized signaling pathways to induce the phenotypic changes in microvessel function that accompany inflammation. Drugs that target a specific microvascular response to inflammation, such as leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion or angiogenesis, have shown promise in both the preclinical and clinical studies of inflammatory disease. Future research efforts in this area will likely identify new avenues for therapeutic intervention in inflammation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Historical Perspectives / Anatomical Considerations / Impaired Vasomotor Responses / Capillary Perfusion / Angiogenesis / Leukocyte-Endothelial Cell Adhesion / Platelet-Vessel Wall Interactions / Coagulation and Thrombosis / Endothelial Barrier Dysfunction / Epilogue / References

Book excerpt: Radioactive chemicals, while playing a vital role in many research and clinical techniques for nucleic acid analysis, are considered dangerous to the laboratory worker and require specialist handling and disposal equipment. This book describes how detailed molecular analysis of DNA and RNA can be performed using a range of non-radioactive chemicals giving similar if not better results than the radioactive methods. It will be a valuable book for molecular biologists and pathologists in academic and clinical research and also those working in clinical diagnostic laboratories.
