Book Synopsis Liberalism and Tradition by : Bernard M. G. Reardon
Download or read book Liberalism and Tradition written by Bernard M. G. Reardon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1975-12-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1975 text is a survey of French Catholic thought during a period of marked spiritual and intellectual revival, delimited roughly by the Napoleonic Concordat with the Vatican in 1802 and the Separation Law of 1905. The author studies many diverse writers in detail and analyses in characteristically lucid manner the distinctive contribution to French intellectual life in this 'second grand siècle'. Dr Reardon examines too the major trends in French Catholic thought, and concludes that in the nineteenth century there was a recurring tension between liberalism and tradition; between the poles of a secular and even agnostic humanism, and a rigid ultramontanism. The approach is non-technical, an the book will be of considerable interest to a wide variety of readers, both general and specialist. It was the first book in English to cover the development of Catholic thought in France through the whole of the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis Boundaries of Faith by : Jill R. Fehleison
Download or read book Boundaries of Faith written by Jill R. Fehleison and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the political and religious crossroads where John Calvin and the Protestant Reformation had taken hold, the Catholic Diocese of Geneva struggled to convert their Protestant neighbors back to the Catholic Church while maintaining a tradition of piety and a firm disciplinary hand. This critical study examines the success of Catholic counter-reform in key rural villages and looks at the significant role played by Bishop François de Sales, who had the unusual challenge of dealing with the two political authorities of Savoy and France. Drawing from a wealth of primary sources, including visitation records of bishops and other diocesan documents, Jill Fehleison contributes to our understanding of early modern Catholicism as it addressed the challenges of coexisting with Protestantism.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Piety by : Megan C. Armstrong
Download or read book The Politics of Piety written by Megan C. Armstrong and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Piety situates the Franciscan order at the heart of the religious and political conflicts of the late sixteenth century to show how a medieval charismatic religious tradition became an engine of political change. The friars used their redoubtable skills as preachers, intellectual training at the University of Paris, and personal and professional connections with other Catholic reformers and patrons to successfully galvanize popular opposition to the spread of Protestantism throughout the sixteenth century. By 1588, the friars used these same strategies on behalf of the Catholic League to prevent the succession of the Protestant heir presumptive, Henry of Navarre, to the French throne. This book contributes to our understanding of religion as a formative political impulse throughout the sixteenth century by linking the long-term political activism of the friars to the emergence of the French monarchy of the seventeenth century. Megan C. Armstrong is assistant professor of early modern Europe in the History Department of the University of Utah.

Download or read book You Looked at Me written by Claudine Moine and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In You Looked At Me, Claudine Moine writes a profound autobiographical account of her own spiritual development. Impacted by her experiences as a refugee from the Thirty Years' War, Moine relates a detailed narrative of God's involvement in her life, comprising times of favour, temptation, transverberation and mystical marriage, and the state of darkness that caused her to cease writing. Illuminated by the translation and collation of Rev. Gerard Carroll, You Looked At Me is a work of extraordinary spiritual and theological richness, offering insights for spiritual seekers and historical researchers alike. It stands in the company of Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love and The Cloud of Unknowing as a crucial text of historical spirituality.
