Hier setzt die ideengeschichtlich orientierte Studie an und zeichnet am Beispiel der frühen Kamaldulenser, Kartäuser und Zisterzienser nach, wie hochmittelalterliche Reformtheologen diese Ambivalenz lösten. Dabei werden sowohl vielfältige Gedankenhorizonte als auch die Veränderungen der Semantik von ‚Einsamkeit‘ innerhalb monastischer Diskurse und Rezeptionsstränge thematisiert.

A chacun de ces auteurs est consacrée une introduction particulière. Puis quelques pages font connaître pour chaque écrit les circonstances de sa composition, son histoire manuscrite, ses éditions et ses traductions. Le texte latin a été revu sur les manuscrits. La traduction est entièrement nouvelle. Trois documents complémentaires sont donnés en appendice : la notice biographique de saint Bruno (XIIe s.), une lettre-pamphlet contre Raoul le Verd et une note sur Foulcoie de Beauvais. Les pages qui retracent la physionomie spirituelle de ces premiers chartreux montrent que ce livre n'est pas seulement l'œuvre d'un érudit précis, mais aussi d'un maître spirituel.
