Book Synopsis Racine and Shakespeare by : Stendhal
Download or read book Racine and Shakespeare written by Stendhal and published by Alma Books. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major critical work by the great French novelist reveals Stendhal's decisive role in the literary renaissance called Romanticism. Written sixteen years before The Charterhouse of Parma, it marked the beginning of his illustrious career and established him at the forefront of the French Romantic movement. The first part of Racine and Shakespeare appeared as a pamphlet in 1823, when Waterloo was still bitterly alive in the French mind. In it, Stendhal vigorously championed the spontaneous vitality of Shakespeare while condemning the rigid imitators of Corneille and Racine. The second half of Racine and Shakespeare appeared two years later in answer to a speech against Romanticism by the secretary of the Academie Francaise. It is a brilliant tour de force, an exchange of letters between an old classicist and a young Romanticist, in which Stendhal defined Romanticism not only for his age but for all time.

Book Synopsis The Spectacular Past by : Maurice Samuels
Download or read book The Spectacular Past written by Maurice Samuels and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Struggling to make sense of the Revolution of 1789, the French in the nineteenth century increasingly turned to visual forms of historical representation in a variety of media. Maurice Samuels shows how new kinds of popular entertainment introduced during and after the Revolution transformed the past into a spectacle. The wax display (in which visitors circulated amid life-size statues of historical figures), the phantasmagoria show (in which images of historical personages were projected onto smoke or invisible screens), and the panorama (in which spectators viewed giant circular canvases depicting historical scenes) employed new optical technologies to entice crowds of spectators. Such entertainments, Samuels asserts, provided bourgeois audiences with an illusion of mastery over the past, allowing them to picture their new role as historical agents.Samuels demonstrates how the spectacular mode of historical representation pervaded historiography, drama, and the novel during the Romantic period. He then argues that the early Realist fiction of Balzac and Stendhal emerged as a critique of the spectacular historical imagination. By investigating how postrevolutionary France envisioned the past, Samuels illuminates a vital moment in the cultural history of modernity.

Download or read book Art and Politics of the Second Empire written by Patricia Mainardi and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Patricia Mainardi presents a new analysis of the major shift in nineteenth-century art from large public to small private works by examining the political and institutional factors that were in effect. Mainardi brings to life the complex institutional world of official art in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, presenting the relevant individual personalities, group interests, conflicts, and shift in a policy with clarity and detail. Writing in a lively, often witty style, she throws much new light on such subjects as the decline of history painting, the rise and eventual triumph of genre painting, the influence exerted in France by the art of England, Belgium, and Germany, and the inevitable collapse of the official exhibition system.
