Book excerpt: Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman, 1752 by Philip Dormer Stanhope Chesterfield MY DEAR FRIEND: Laziness of mind, or inattention, are as great enemies to knowledge as incapacity; for, in truth, what difference is there between a man who will not, and a man who cannot be informed? This difference only, that the former is justly to be blamed, the latter to be pitied. And yet how many there are, very capable of receiving knowledge, who from laziness, inattention, and incuriousness, will not so much as ask for it, much less take the least pains to acquire it! Our young English travelers generally distinguish themselves by a voluntary privation of all that useful knowledge for which they are sent abroad; and yet, at that age, the most useful knowledge is the most easy to be acquired; conversation being the book, and the best book in which it is contained. The drudgery of dry grammatical learning is over, and the fruits of it are mixed with, and adorned by, the flowers of conversation. How many of our young men have been a year at Rome, and as long at Paris, without knowing the meaning and institution of the Conclave in the former, and of the parliament in the latter? and this merely for want of asking the first people they met with in those several places, who could at least have given them some general notions of those matters. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, was a high-ranking diplomat and politician during the reigns of George I and George II in eighteenth-century England. Today, Lord Chesterfield is best known for the four hundred or so letters to his son collected and published without his prior knowledge or approval as Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman. Because he had been mostly neglected as a young man, Lord Chesterfield wanted to be present for his son Philip. However, because Philip was illegitimate – the son of Chesterfield and a Dutch governess – his father’s attention came in the form of letters. Beginning in 1737 when Philip was five years old and ending after Philip’s unexpected death at the age of thirty-six, the letters offer honest and often funny advice on everything: art, literature, politics, manners, and how to get ahead in the world. Through these private letters, Lord Chesterfield was grooming his son to overcome the stigma of illegitimacy to rise to a suitably high station.

Book excerpt: "Tracing all the pre-colonial representations of "Hottentots" and "Hottentotism" operative in early-modern England allows us to see the birth and the development of a prejudice that became central to the nation. In their constructions of "Hottentots" the English found a way to vent their own fear, anger, and conflict about themselves and their society, particularly as they were transforming and redefining their nation as imperial Great Britain. The very invention of the "Hottentots" shows that the English needed to envision a worst people in order to imagine themselves as the world's most advanced people."--BOOK JACKET.
