Book excerpt: If you want to follow a daily discipline of devotional reading -- but want to be challenged daily to grow in faith and knowledge of the Lord and want that knowledge to have heart too -- welcome to daily doses of wisdom from the greatest minds in Christian history. These letters help reorient readers from generalizations to particulars, from conventions to specific actions, from theory to practice, and from the profession of faith to the pulsating, living, inner, and intimate expressions and experiences of "walking with God," and indeed, of "being open before God." Features and Benefits A rare collection of devotional nuggets that will challenge the mature believer. Letters are from great Christians throughout history such as Augustine, Leo the Great, John Newton and C. S. Lewis. Each letter concludes with a Scripture Meditation, Thought for the Day, and Prayer.

She studies at the Julliard School in New York, where careers are being formed—or not. Between strict practice schedules, music classes, and regular school, Ally doesn't have time for much else. Sometimes she wishes she could break free, but she's never known any other way. Her parents—a professional violinist and a singer—would kill her if they knew she was thinking about quitting piano, especially her mother. So she keeps on going, but as the months go by, she begins to ask herself, does she even love the piano? Why does she play? And how much longer can she stand the pressure before she breaks?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Creeley is one of the most celebrated and influential American poets. A stylist of the highest order, Creeley imbued his correspondence with the literary artistry he brought to his poetry. Through his engagements with mentors such as William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound; peers such as Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, Denise Levertov, Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac; and mentees such as Charles Bernstein, Anselm Berrigan, Ed Dorn, Susan Howe, and Tom Raworth, Creeley helped forge a new poetry that reimagined writing for his and subsequent generations. This first ever volume of his letters, written between 1945 and 2005, document the life, work, and times of one of our greatest writers and represent a critical archive of the development of contemporary American poetry, as well as the changing nature of letter writing and communication in the digital era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new look at the ways van Gogh represented the seasons and the natural world throughout his career The changing seasons captivated Vincent van Gogh (1853–90), who saw in their unending cycle the majesty of nature and the existence of a higher force. Van Gogh and the Seasons is the first book to explore this central aspect of van Gogh's life and work. Van Gogh often linked the seasons to rural life and labor as men and women worked the land throughout the year. From his depictions of peasants and sowers to winter gardens, riverbanks, orchards, and harvests, he painted scenes that richly evoke the sensory pleasures and deprivations particular to each season. This stunning book brings to life the locales that defined his tumultuous career, from Arles, where he experienced his most crucial period of creativity, to Auvers-sur-Oise, where he committed suicide. It looks at van Gogh's interpretation of nature, the religious implications of the seasons in his time, and how his art was perceived against the backdrop of various symbolist factions, antimaterialist debates, and esoteric beliefs in fin de siècle Paris. The book also features revealing extracts from the artist's correspondence and artworks from his own collection that provide essential context to the themes in his work. Breathtakingly illustrated and featuring informative essays by Sjraar van Heugten, Joan Greer, and Ted Gott, Van Gogh and the Seasons shines new light on the extraordinary creative vision of one of the world's most beloved artists.

It contains strategies and techniques for teachers to use in all of the curriculum areas. The lessons are geared to improve academic performance by strengthening a child’s thinking skills. The book tries to make learning challenging and exciting in the “Content Areas”. The strategies and techniques found in the book help children to logically analyze various comprehension skills. Ultimately, the children make meaningful judgments based on critical thinking skills. My book tries to imbue in children a love for reading. In the book, I incorporated reading for meaning with the teaching of phonics ad word attach skills. There are thirty-one stories. Each story emphasizes one of the following seven comprehension skills: 1. Critical Thinking Suptopics: a. Is the story real or make-believe b. Is the story fact or opinion? c. Another critical thinking skill that is taught is the Teacher of Persuation. 2. How to draw inferences. 3. How to find the main idea. 4. How to determine sequence of time. 5. How lo locate as answer 6. How to find and relate details. 7. How to predict outcomes. The book contains two sections. One is the Children’s Book; it has a Children’s Table of Contents and the other a Teacher’s Table of Contents which gives a synopsis of each lesson and a Teacher’s Manual for each of the children’s thirty-one stories. The Teacher’s Manual is a “walk through” for each lesson for the inexperienced as well as experienced teacher. Although the lessons are structured, the teacher is encouraged to use her and/or the children’s creativity and input. The lessons within the book can be tailored to be simple or more complex. The teacher may use her own judgment, considering the grade level of her children and/or her experience. The book contains the following curriculum areas: Reading, Listening, Speaking-Conversational Skills, Critical Thinking Skills, Spelling-Writing Skills – Creative Expression, Arithmetic, Science, Music-Singing, Art, Physical Fitness, Proper Social Behavior and Conflict Resolution. In every lesson there is an enrichment activity. The teacher is encouraged to give meaningful homework assignments that are listed in every lesson. The child’s parents are given support to assist with this type of family homework. The lessons are Cross Referenced. This will help teachers as an instructional guide. The book was field tested in seven different schools within District 8. It was received with great enthusiasm. It was acclaimed by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent and other personnel within District 8, Bronx, N.Y.
