Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Port Royal, Written at the Time of the Civil War With Commodore Dupont's capture, on November 7, 1861, of two earth forts which the rebels had recently thrown up at Hilton Head and Bay Point, South Caro lina, the Sea Island region became Union territory. The planters and their families having ed precipi fately, the United States Government found itself in possession of almost everything that had been theirs, the two chief items being the largest cotton crop ever yet raised there, nearly ready for exporting, and several hundred demoralized, destitute slaves, the number of whom was daily being increased by refugees and returned fugitives. The negroes were plainly a burden some problem, the cotton a valuable piece of property. The first thing to do was obvious, and fortunately the same cotton-agents who were despatched by the authorities at Washington to collect and ship the pro perty were able, by employing negroes for the purpose, to make a beginning towards solving the problem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unknown Friends: A Civil War Romance; Letters of My Father and My Mother The contents of this book will I hope give the same pleasure to my children which they have given to me, and it is only necessary for me to preface the little volume with a few explanatory notes. As a young girl I remember hearing my mother speak Of her Civil War romance with my father and of certain letters which she had treasured during the years. After my father's death, which occurred on New Year's Day 1 908, mother again referred to the letters and said that she wished me to have them after her death. We had the joy of having her with us alert in mind and body until just before her ninetieth birth day. It was not until a few years later that the letters were discovered in an old japanned box among her effects. They have been printed exactly as written with no attempt at editing, as it is my feeling that any changes on my part would only serve to lessen their worth. AS will be readily observed in reading the letters, there are few of my mother's letters extant and the first three are signed with her sister's name. She makes her own explanation of this. As my father was a cavalry scout it is easy to understand that even the smallest impedimenta were impos'sible and it is only remarkable that mother's first four letters were*6. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Towards Liturgies that Reconcile reflects upon Christian worship as it is shaped, and mis-shaped, by human prejudice, specifically by racism. African Americans and European Americans have lived together for 400 years on the continent of North America, but they have done so as slave and master, outsider and insider, oppressed and oppressor. Scott Haldeman traces the development of Protestant worship among whites and blacks, showing that the following exist in tension: African American and European American Protestant liturgical traditions are both interdependent and distinct; and that multicultural communities must both understand and celebrate the uniqueness of various member groups while also accepting the risk and possibility of praying themselves into an integrated body, one new culture.
