Book excerpt: On 16 November 1671, Liselotte von der Pfalz, the nineteen-year-old daughter of the Elector of Palatine, was married to Philippe d'Orleans, "Monsieur, " the only brother of Louis XIV. The marriage was not to be a happy one. Liselotte (known in France as Elisabeth Charlotte, Duchesse d'Orleans, or "Madame") was full of intellectual energy and moral rigor. Homesick for her native Germany, she felt temperamentally ill-suited to life at the French court. The homosexual Monsieur, deeply immersed in the pleasures and intrigues of the court, shared few of his wife's interests. Yet, for the next fifty years, Liselotte remained in France, never far from the center of one of the most glorious courts of Europe. And throughout this period, she wrote letters - sometimes as many as forty a week - to her friends and relatives in Germany. It is from this extraordinary body of correspondence that A Woman's Life in the Court of the Sun King has been fashioned. As introduced and translated by Elborg Forster, the letters have become the remarkable personal narrative of Liselotte's transformation from an innocent, yet outspoken, girl into a formidable observer of great events and human folly.

Book excerpt: France's iconic queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake," was alternately revered and reviled during her lifetime. For centuries since, she has been the object of debate, speculation, and the fascination so often accorded illustrious figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted child was thrust onto the royal stage and commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in European history. Antonia Fraser's lavish and engaging portrait excites compassion and regard for all aspects of the queen, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, but in the culture of an unparalleled time and place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When she was growing up in Nazi Germany, Liselotte Peschel was fascinated with music, literature, and all things scientific and technical. Her bookkeeping job at a local telephone company brought her into contact with Ernst Roesch, a young apprentice eager to master the elements of his trade and bursting with his own ideas about the machines that he wanted to design and build. Their budding friendship seemed to be over when an official letter demanded that Ernst, a half-Jew, report to Gestapo headquarters in Munich early in 1945. Ernst's mother had already been sent away to the camp in Theresienstadt. Now he was shipped off to Wolmirsleben, a slave labor camp in northern Germany—where, early on, he decided that he'd do whatever he could to stay alive, and to keep in touch with the young woman he cared for. At first, when he was still at Wolmirsleben, he sent her a postcard to wish her a Happy Easter. Later—after the camp was liberated, and after he was reunited with his mother and emigrated to America—he began writing letters to her regularly, sharing his thoughts and hopes for his future—one that he hoped would include her. Their long-distance friendship took an unexpected turn when Ernst was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and then sent to Berlin to work in military intelligence. Now, after a five-year hiatus, he had the chance to meet with her again face to face. In these pages Steven Roesch uses his parents' correspondence from the 1940s and 1950s to tell the story of their early years.

Book excerpt: In a small town on the Baltic coast, in a community steeped in maritime industries and local mores, a teenager falls in love with his English professor. Christian looks older than his years, Stella younger than hers. The summer they spend together is filled with boat rides to Bird Island, secret walks on the beach, and furtive glances. The emotions that blossom between Christian and Stella are aflame with passion and innocence, and with an idealistic hope of a future. The two lovers manage to keep their mutual attraction concealed, but as the hot months comes to an end, their meetings become more difficult to conceal. Stella begins at the end, at Stella Petersen’s memorial service, where Christian relives the memories he shared with his first love. There is nothing salacious about their relationship, nor is it just a case of a teenager’s crush on his teacher. Their affair changes both Christian and Stella, allows them to expand their views, and pushes them out of social and familial constraints. Theirs is a tender love story of a time, and yet speaks to any time; it is actually through death that their love is transformed. The sparseness of Siegfried Lenz’s narrative is reminiscent of the existential stringency of Ernest Hemingway. Only a master stylist ofhis standing could compose such a story that is equally modest and powerful, a work that leaves a lasting authentic impression, and that strives to comply with W.H. Auden’s famous request, “Tell me the truth about love.”

Book excerpt: In this quiet and devastating novel about the rise of fascism, Siggi Jepsen, incarcerated as a juvenile delinquent, is assigned to write a routine German lesson on the “The Joys of Duty.” Overfamiliar with these joys, Siggi sets down his life since 1943, a decade earlier, when as a boy he watched his father, a constable, doggedly carry out orders from Berlin to stop a well-known Expressionist artist from painting and to seize all his “degenerate” work. Soon Siggi is stealing the paintings to keep them safe from his father. “I was trying to find out,” Lenz says, “where the joys of duty could lead a people.” Translated from the German by Ernst Kaiser and Eithne Wilkins

Book excerpt: Friedrich Reiner Niemann was a German soldier serving in the 6th Infantry Division from 1941 to 1945. A well-educated youth from a good family in Westphalia, he was sent to the brutal Russian front four times. He wrote his final two letters home on 12 January 1945, before disappearing during the Soviet Vistula-Oder Offensive. With the assistance of Reiner's extensive correspondence with his family, which has been obtained by the authors, Feldpost documents his life and front-line experiences over this period. Throughout the war, evocative and moving messages were passed between Reiner, on the Eastern Front, and his family, who, by the end of the war, would be scattered throughout Germany. Reiner describes the fighting at Rzhev from 1942-43 and how he survived the destruction of his division during the Soviet summer offensive in 1944. His is a rare view of battles that annihilated entire German divisions and armies. After the Second World War, the Niemann family preserved Reiner's letters and photographs and shipped them to New Orleans, where Reiner's sister, Liselotte Andersson, had emigrated. Neglected in an attic for over fifty years, the documents surfaced only after Hurricane Katrina flooded the family house. Andersson's daughter-inlaw, author Whitney Stewart, discovered the letters in 2012 and contacted Denis Havel to translate them. Together, Havel and Stewart uncovered historical details that enabled them to follow Reiner's trail and finally tell his story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating and fresh interpretation of the life of Philippe d'Orleans and a portrait of a brilliant and glomorous time in history. Philippe D'Orleans had been a rebel at the court of Versailles, delighting in flouting convention and flaunting his vice. The focus on his lurid reputation led many historians to overlook his achievements. Libertine he may have been, but he was also a great Liberal and gallantly pursued a goal of peace and prosperity for all his fellow countrymen while beset by conspiracies, plots and intrigues. Patron of Watteau and the young Voltaire, Philippe D'Orleans was a modernising patrician whose Regency was was both glamorous and a fascinating transition period in the history of a nation. This biography sheds a new light on the man and his times.

Book excerpt: This hardcover book brings together 20 of what fashion illustrator Liselotte Watkins calls her "girls," the Art Nouveau-ish drawings that have become her trademark and have been featured in publications such as Ubersee, Vogue, Elle, Glamour and Mademoiselle. The black and white illustrations included here tell absorbing visual stories in a language that is purely graphic and consists of lines instead of letters. When asked how she was able to give her seemingly simple drawings such personality, Watkins replied: "They're all people to me. I work out their whole story where they live, if they have a boyfriend, their bank balances and their style. That's why one girl might have only the jacket of a Victor & Rolf suit she lost her job the week before so she can?t afford the rest of it."
