Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and Bible expert Bart Ehrman reveals how Jesus’s divinity became dogma in the first few centuries of the early church. The claim at the heart of the Christian faith is that Jesus of Nazareth was, and is, God. But this is not what the original disciples believed during Jesus’s lifetime—and it is not what Jesus claimed about himself. How Jesus Became God tells the story of an idea that shaped Christianity, and of the evolution of a belief that looked very different in the fourth century than it did in the first. A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman reveals how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty, Creator of all things. But how did he move from being a Jewish prophet to being God? In a book that took eight years to research and write, Ehrman sketches Jesus’s transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus’s followers had visions of him after his death—alive again—did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God. And what they meant by that was not at all what people mean today. Written for secular historians of religion and believers alike, How Jesus Became God will engage anyone interested in the historical developments that led to the affirmation at the heart of Christianity: Jesus was, and is, God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Epistle of Jesus to the Church is a commentary on the book of Revelation that assumes Jesus was the author and John the reporter of the words and events described. Here one will not find an explanation of an anti-Roman message written by John in hidden codes and apocalyptic motifs to fool Roman authorities. John the apostle and prophet was the faithful scribe, who did not create the message but faithfully and accurately described all that he saw and heard. This commentary follows the principle that the Scriptures explain themselves, because the Revelation is a word from Jesus to his church--a word that is grounded in the Scriptures. The Epistle of Jesus to the Church has been written with teachers, students, and pastors in mind. The interpretation of the book of Revelation is thorough; difficult passages are addressed, and plausible answers are provided to the questions posed by in-depth study of the biblical book. This is a commentary for personal study or classroom instruction, one that may be confidently used to preach and teach the Revelation of Jesus to the church.

Book excerpt: From the Acts, the Epistles and Revelation is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by James Russell Miller (20 March 1840 – 2 July 1912) was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. James Russell Miller was born near Frankfort Springs, Pennsylvania, on the banks of the Big Traverse, which according to his biographer, John T. Faris, is a merry little mill stream which drains one of the most beautiful valleys in the southern part of Beaver County. His parents were James Alexander Miller and Eleanor Creswell who were of Irish/Scottish stock. Miller was the second child of ten, but his older sister died before he was born. James and his sisters attended the district school in Hanover Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania until, when James was about fourteen, his father moved to a farm near Calcutta, Ohio. The children then went to the district school during the short winters and worked on the farm during summer. In 1857, James entered Beaver Academy and in 1862 he progressed to Westminster College, Pennsylvania, which he graduated in June 1862. Then in the autumn of that year he entered the theological seminary of the United Presbyterian Church at Allegheny, Pennsylvania.

Book excerpt: The Bible is simply a love letter compiled into sixty-six books and written over a period ofsixteen hundred years by more than forty authors living on three continents. Although theauthors came from different backgrounds, there is one message, one theme, one thread that runs throughout the entire Bible from the first book, Genesis, to the last book, Revelation. That message is God's redeeming love for mankind--a message that is as relevant for us today as it was two thousand years ago.Other Letters (Hebrews, James, First Peter, Second Peter, First John, Second John, and Third John) were written over a period of approximately fifty years. The book of James was the earliest, penned between AD 46 and 49, and Revelation was the last to be recorded; it was written by the apostle John in AD 95 or 96. Most of these letters were written after the apostle Paul's death, and they carried on the Christian epistolary tradition. In contrast to many of Paul's writings, the General Epistles were written during the years of heavy Roman persecution of the Christian population. The content of some of these letters reflects this increasingly hostile environment. In addition, the spread and strength of false teachings was much greater than it was during the years that Paul wrote. This challenge to Christianity is also very evident in the content and tone of these last nine books of the New Testament.Of course, there could be no better capstone to the New Testament -- and, in fact, to the entire Bible -- than the book of Revelation. In it, God records His last words about the final days and the ultimate victory of His Son, the Lamb of God and the Lion of Judah.

From the relationship between the New Covenant and the Old Covenant in Hebrews, to the practical wisdom of James, to the warnings of Jude, each of these epistles has much to tell us about following Christ today. This exposition looks at what these letters teach us about God’s character, His relationship with His people, and His call for our commitment. The authors also help us better understand the book of Revelation—one of the most misunderstood books of the Bible. Though Revelation is often daunting to laypeople and scholars alike, The Bible Knowledge Commentary gives life-changing insight into the interpretation, purpose, and application of this profound book. Together, the later epistles and the book of Revelation offer explanations of God’s ancient truths and hope for a world to come.
