Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johanne and Knud lived close to the town of Kjöge, where there are many gardens that extend as far as the river. There is not much else, but it is charming in summer! It was under the willow-tree in one of these gardens that Johanne and Knud spent a great deal of their time and theirs was a beautiful friendship. But everything would change when Johanne had to leave for Copenhagen with her father! Would they remain friends? Or even, as Knud hoped, could they become more than friends? Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor Cecco is a children’s story written by Margery Williams Bianco; a celebrated British-American author, best known for penning The Velveteen Rabbit. Bianco (1881 – 1944), started writing children’s books in the 1920s, and published Poor Cecco – a distinguished book rivalling the Velveteen Rabbit in ‘classic status’ – in 1925. It has the amusingly lengthy subtitle: The Wonderful Story of a Wonderful Wooden Dog Who Was the Jolliest Toy in the House Until He Went Out to Explore the World, which rather aptly describes the contents! The book further contains a series of dazzling colour and black-and-white illustrations – by a master of the craft; Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (which encompassed the years from 1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham’s artistry is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Margery Bianco’s captivating narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author had the opportunity to go to college after back surgery and was no longer able to work in her field of avionics. She was tested for her abilities to learn, and it was recommended she go to a technical school versus a college. She decided to go to college even though the specialists recommended her not to. It took her seven years to graduate, and she graduated with an above average GPA. She took a creative writing course and found it to be therapeutic and a way to use her creative side. This book will take you through more than one journey that the author experienced in her life (her play deals with her journey in college, her anecdote where she does a 360 in her vehicle on her way to her godchild's baptism, or when she was alone in the country and a woman shot the dog and the windows in her car) as well as creative short stories and an interview with her mother's experience dealing with the hardships she had with her disabled son who had Riley-Day syndrome. The reader will also find connections within some of the stories in the book. So if you like a murder mystery, an adventure, or true life, this is the book for you.

Book excerpt: I found a little boy last night, and I can only assume he's lived on the street alone his entire life. I've decided to take him in. He's definitely not like any kid I've ever seen before. For one thing, he might be an angel. He has started to grow wings now, and his eyes are a strangely glowing red. He's so pale though, like he's never even seen the sun. He seems lost and I know he has a lot to learn, but I think he's got a good heart. I hope I can help him see how special he really is. *** Why am I like this? I feel like I'm someone's idea of a cruel joke. A demon with angel wings? How funny it must all be to them-but it's not to me. I have to deal with this, trying to hide who I really am and not let the monster inside me get out. When it starts to take over, my eyes glow scarlet and I feel myself go out of control. I don't understand why I'm here, or what I am, but trying to fit in and be human is the only thing I can do. I hope no one notices me.

Book excerpt: “Paints a vibrant portrait of post-war Vietnam, illuminating both the dangers and the great beauty of a country in the process of healing itself.” —Booklist You can go home again. When twenty-three-year-old Maia Trieu, a curator’s assistant at the Museum of Folklore & Rocks in Little Saigon, Orange County, is offered a research grant to Vietnam for the summer of 1991, she cannot refuse. The grant’s sponsor has one stipulation: Maia is to contact her great-aunt to pass on plans to overthrow the current government. The expatriates did not anticipate that Maia would become involved with excursions in search of her mother or attract an entourage: an American traveler, a government agent, an Amerasian singer, and a cat. Maia carries out what she believes is her role as a filial daughter to her late father, a former ARVN soldier, by returning to their homeland to continue the fight for an independent Vietnam. Along the way, however, she meets a cast of characters—historical and fictional, living and dead—who propel her on a journey of self-discovery, through which she begins to understand what it means to love. “Delivers a war-ravaged Vietnam rich in history, folklore, the tragedy of families torn asunder, and the beauty of Buddhist wisdom that connects the living and dead . . . an impressive debut.” —Charles Johnson, National Book Award-winning author of Middle Passage “Lam deftly explores the slippery interplay between heritage and identity, history and duty, ultimately proving that each of us is so much more than the places we come from. An important debut.” —Quan Barry, author of We Ride Upon Sticks

In “I Dare You to Tell the Truth.” Miss Peakock has given the reader a rarely seen glimpse into the vast diversity of male-female encounters. From the first to the last page, the “truthful” reader will identify with scenarios or encounters they experienced or someone they know experienced. For those wanting to develop a workable plan for achieving relationships that includes honesty, open communication and realistic goals, this book is a must read. I implore all to read this book in preparation for the relationship battles ahead. As the sayings go, “forewarned, is forearmed” AND “a word (or this book) to the wise is sufficient.” -Dr. Deborah A. Finley After reading Ginger Peakock’s new novel, “I Dare You to Tell the Truth.” The book is a must read as well as a great read, Real life experience; know your partner a little better before committing to them. Also pay attention to detail about a person because everybody won’t tell you the truth. -Author Carl Boddie These short stories will have you on the edge of your seat anticipating the surprising twists and turns that awaits you. Some even have life lessons that keep you thinking. Detailed, eventful and humorous I promise you these vignettes will leave you wanting to read on. -Cosmetologist Reason Ali Definitely one of those books that have a person say hmm? Lots of great conversation will be shared after reading this book. Everyone can relate to at least one of these characters. I Dare You to Tell the Truth. -Homemaker Lisa Fernandez It’s a very powerful version of true life stories, and a must read for all family members, couples, and singles alike. -Non-traditional college student Cassandra Royal I must say after reading the novel I Dare You to Tell the Truth, I was sitting in my chair as if I had my seat belt on. The novel captivated my attention, and I could not put it down. The novel focused on all aspects of relationships, family, identity, marriage, or meeting someone for the first time. I began asking myself a few serious questions, how well do you really know who someone is? Are people really living double lives, and how many had similar situations that are on the pages of this book, but dare to tell the truth? This novel was steamy, an attention grabber, a lesson in living, and most of all can be used as a motivational book in the dating arena. Congratulations this novel is “HOT”. -Ms. Sharon Robinson—Director

Book excerpt: This Excellent Collection brings together Mark Twain's longer, major books and a fine selection of shorter pieces and Science-Fiction Books. This Books created and collected in Mark Twain's Most important Works illuminate the life and work of one of the most individual writers of the XX century - a man who elevated political writing to an art. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name "Mark Twain", was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise.[5] His humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into French.[6] His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, but he invested in ventures that lost most of it—such as the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter that failed because of its complexity and imprecision. He filed for bankruptcy in the wake of these financial setbacks, but in time overcame his financial troubles with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers. He eventually paid all his creditors in full, even though his bankruptcy relieved him of having to do so. Twain was born shortly after an appearance of Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it" as well; he died the day after the comet made its closest approach to the Earth. Book excerpt: Since 1972, the Foxfire books have preserved and celebrated the culture of Southern Appalachia for countless readers all around the world. In Foxfire Story, folklorist (and Foxfire director) T.J. Smith collects some of his favorite stories from the archives to illuminate the oral traditions that have been part of the culture of the mountains for centuries. Here are instances of mountain speech, proverbs and sayings, legends, folktales, anecdotes, songs, and pranks and jests, along with ghost tales and accounts of folk belief, as well as stories from half a dozen of the region’s finest storytellers. Through these examples, Smith examines the role storytelling plays in the Southern Appalachian community, identifying the rich traditions that can be found in the region and exploring how they convey a sense of place—and of identity.
