Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters, Addressed to the People of the United States, in Vindication of His Conduct It was necessary to notice this but, even on that occasion, I did not become an assailant; nor did I invite the people to look upon the stage, much less behind the scenes, where their dearest rights and interests are sported with by incognito performers. On the contrary, I merely published a brief defensive address, so little indicative of resentment, that it was pronounced, even by dispassionate men, as reprehensibly mild. Several grave questions, connected with my case, have long been discussed, not only in congress, but throughout the coun try. The instructions given to the President's agent for making inquiries as to state banks, are before the senate of the United States; and in my own defence, I ought to give some respecting them. Doubts have been expressed on the body, whether there had been due foresight and w the evils that now exist; and it is due to myself should show, that in this respect, as well as in others, I did my duty. In September last, the President appealed to the people, by publishing his reasons for directing a removal of the public de posites; and as soon as congress assembled, my successor in the treasury department presented a statement in relation to his agency in removing them. It seems, therefore, to be a duty to myself, if not to the public, to present, in detail, my reasons for resisting the President; and, at least his friends cannot complain of my appealing to the people, since in doing so I barely imitate his own example. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to the People of the United States: The Great Rebellion, Causes Progress and Remedy Time has proved the truth of their predictions. Many singular coincidents have occurred to encourage me in writing the addresses. After writing about Washington in my closet, I was requested to see three fine clusters of white blossoms on a Washington apple tree. At the first view I called them blossoms of peace. Asked if there was another Washington, and gathered fruit and flowers from the same tree the last of September, 1863. Again I feel myself called upon to address my countrymen - not for the benefit of political parties, but for the best good of thirty millions of people, who inhabit one of the richest and most fruitful portions of the civilized world, and who, with the favor of God and the blessings of peace and union, may yet be a great and prosperous nation. Acknowledging my responsi bility, I feel deeply conscious of a sacred right to address this nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wound Dresser: A Series of Letters, Written From the Hospitals in Washington, During the War of the Rebellion What the United States are working out and establishing needs imperatively the connivance of something subtler than ballots and legislators. The Goethean theory and lesson (if I may briefly state it so) of the exclusive sufficiency of artistic, scientific, literary equipment to the character, irrespective of any strong claims of the political ties of nation, state, or city, could have answer'd under the con ventionality and pettiness of Weimar, or the Ger many, or even Europe, of those times; but it will not do for America to-day at all. We have not only to exploit our own theory above any that has pre ceded us, but we have entirely different, and deeper rooted, and infinitely broader themes.
