Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of Australia’s most acclaimed and high profile writers co-author a sensitive and ultimately hopeful story about our growing climate crisis. Nyx lives in the Tasmania of 2091 – deforested, over-mined and affected by bushfires and drought. With sea-levels rising, Tasmania is marooned and abandoned to its fate. Nyx’s widowed father wants them to leave while they can, but for Nyx, West Hobart is all she has ever known, and where her mother is buried. She finds solace in the single living tree on the dusty reserve near her home, an 80-foot pine that has defied odds and survived the climate crisis. Bea lives in present, beautiful, Tasmania and is facing a move to the mainland. She will miss the giant tree that she climbs to seek solace from bullies. One day she leaves a despairing note, the words pouring out her troubles, stuffed in a hole in its trunk. Nyx finds the note, and writes back. The girls begin a correspondence across two different time periods and they form a friendship that defies the logic of time. When Nyx faces life threatening fire and then floods, she must turn to her friend Bea to change the future.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to inform with unique sources of documentary evidence a detailed contemporary account of a momentous unsung event in defence of our nation in WWII. For the eager reader or student wishing to add to their knowledge the author has created an historical reference work. This largely unknown part of WW II history was summed up by the great A. P. Herbert (Sir Alan Herbert) as “A Grateful Nation Soon Forgot”. AP, as he was known, was involved in these historic events throughout the war. From 1939-1945 The Naval Control Service (NCS) controlled vital convoy operations from Southend. Many WW1 Battle of Jutland veterans descended on Southend as volunteers for convoy work. These men of experience included Admirals and Vice Admirals who commanded the earliest supply convoys. Many of the NCS team in residence were well known nationally distinguished men and women. Southend’s longest sea pier in the world, stretches for one and one third miles out into the Thames Estuary and has at its end a deep water harbour. At the gateway to The Thames and North Sea it was ideal for convoy operations. The Germans were aware of this and would come to destroy the facility and close The Thames in a night bombing raid by the Luftwaffe on 22nd November 1939. They had not expected the foresight of Capt. John Pelham Champion CBE., DSO., RN in command of the NCS. By his hunch in guessing when they would come, the Pier was prepared with an armed defence. Not only was the German plan thwarted but the Thames to London stayed open for the duration of the war against the stated prediction of Winston Churchill.

Book excerpt: The theme of The Sparrow is the conflict presented to Ralph Kimberley, a London vicar, by his ardent support of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Although a kind, well-intentioned man, he does not realise the effect his sympathies are having on his parish, nor on those who are close to him. His wife, Myra, feels neglected and unloved and finds herself taking an unhealthy interest in Keith Wilson, a young discharged prisoner whom Ralph has befriended. His orphaned niece, Sarah, too, feels herself alone and unwanted. It takes dramatic events to bring home to Ralph the knowledge that his personal obligations must come before his devotion to the cause. Instead of choosing the role of a martyr, he must perform an act of apparent cowardice to begin a fresh start.

Book excerpt: Murder, mystery...and marrowsSome people would describe Beattie Bramshaw as a pillar of the community. Many would applaud her numerous successes in the bakery competition at the annual village show. A small number might say, if pushed, that they find her a little on the bossy side. And one or two might just whisper the words &‘interfering' and &‘busybody' behind her back. But no one would have her down as a murderer. So why is she being questioned in Dreighton police station after being found in the local allotments, at the dead of night, wielding a kitchen knife just yards away from where local lottery winner, Yvonne Richards, was found stabbed to death? And what does all of this have to do with Doug Sparrow's prize marrows?Marrow Jam is a comedy crime caper in the spirit of Agatha Raisin. It will have you chuckling all the way through many a cup of tea.?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is simple for Rickey Parkitt-Mann, an innocent and impressionable boy who relocates with his family to No. 1 Fighter Wing Air Force Base in Marville, France. The year is 1956, and at the tender age of six, Rickey is thrown into early adolescence, which is filled with surprise, excitement, and insecurity. He lives with his mother, father, and little sister in C-block of the Private Married Quarters (PMQs), eleven miles from the Base. The PMQs are their own little microcosm, with no phones, television, or police to regulate what goes on. Rickey meets a variety of friends and foes (some who seem to be both), including the Air Force Brats—one of the PMQs’ infamous boy gangs. Teased, taunted, and taken for granted, Rickey quickly matures beyond his years. When he’s not navigating the slippery rungs of schoolyard hierarchies, he also travels around Europe with his family, camping, meeting odd characters, and learning more about the world. His life of adventure and learning is occasionally punctuated by moments of shock and tragedy, including the suicide—perhaps murder—of a burgeoning friend. In this exciting work of autobiographical fiction, Richard Andrew Parke-Taylor brings us a stunningly detailed and realistic portrait of boyhood and distant life in the wake of the Second World War. Oscillating between moments of humor and horror, Memories Best Forgotten will rivet the reader until the dramatic final pages.

Book excerpt: Although so much of the life we care about takes place at home, this private space often remains behind closed doors and is notoriously difficult for researchers to infiltrate. We may think it is just up to us to decorate, transform and construct our homes, but in this book we discover a new form of ‘estate agency', the active participation of the home and its material culture in the construction of our lives. What do the possessions people choose to take with them when moving say about who they are, and should we emphasize the mobility of a move or the stability of what movers take with them? How is the home an active partner in developing relationships? Why are our homes sometimes haunted by 'ghosts'?. This intriguing book is a rare behind-the-scenes exposé of the domestic sphere across a range of cultures. Examples come from working class housewives in Norway, a tribal society in Taiwan, a museum in London, tenants in Canada and students from Greece, to produce a genuinely comparative perspective based in every case on sustained fieldwork. So Japan, long thought to be a nation that idealizes uncluttered simplicity, is shown behind closed doors to harbour illicit pockets of disorganization, while the warmth inside Romanian apartments is used to expel the presence of the state. Representing a vital development in the study of material culture, this book clearly shows that we may think we possess our homes, but our homes are more likely to possess us.

Book excerpt: Longlisted for the International Booker Prize This lyrical debut novel is at once a passionate coming-of-age story, a meditation on illness and death, and a kaleidoscopic journey through one woman’s life—told in part by the malevolent voice of her disease. Lia, her husband Harry, and their beloved daughter, Iris, are a precisely balanced family of three. With Iris struggling to navigate the social tightrope of early adolescence, their tender home is a much-needed refuge. But when a sudden diagnosis threatens to derail each of their lives, the secrets of Lia’s past come rushing into the present, and the world around them begins to transform. Deftly guided through time, we discover the people who shaped Lia’s youth; from her deeply religious mother to her troubled first love. In turn, each will take their place in the shifting landscape of Lia’s body; at the center of which dances a gleeful narrator, learning her life from the inside, growing more emboldened by the day. Pivoting between the domestic and the epic, the comic and the heart-breaking, this astonishing novel unearths the darkness and levity of one woman’s life to symphonic effect.

Book excerpt: When Annie, just beginning to heal from a near-fatal crash, sets off for a conference in France, she has no idea that this will be the catalyst for a dramatic journey. It starts out innocently enough: a late summer party on a Devon riverbank, a full moon. But two things happen as a result of that night: Annie's husband is killed, and the 'accident' jolts her into a 700-year-old 'memory' that will take her to the Pyrenees and the inferno at the heart of the Cathar inquisition, into a turbulent love affair, and towards another encounter with death.
