Book Synopsis Enchantment and Creed in the Hymns of Ambrose of Milan by : Brian Dunkle
Download or read book Enchantment and Creed in the Hymns of Ambrose of Milan written by Brian Dunkle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enchantment and Creed in the Hymns of Ambrose of Milan offers the first critical overview of the hymns of Ambrose of Milan in the context of fourth-century doctrinal song and Ambrose's own catechetical preaching. Brian P. Dunkle, SJ, argues that these settings inform the interpretation of Ambrose's hymnodic project. The hymns employ sophisticated poetic techniques to foster a pro-Nicene sensitivity in the bishop's embattled congregation. After a summary presentation of early Christian hymnody, with special attention to Ambrose's Latin predecessors, Dunkle describes the mystagogical function of fourth-century songs. He examines Ambrose's sermons, especially his catechetical and mystagogical works, for preached parallels to this hymnodic effort. Close reading of Ambrose's hymnodic corpus constitutes the bulk of the study. Dunkle corroborates his findings through a treatment of early Ambrosian imitations, especially the poetry of Prudentius. These early readers amplify the hymnodic features that Dunkle identifies as "enchanting," that is, enlightening the "eyes of faith."

Book Synopsis Trace and Aura by : Patrick Boucheron
Download or read book Trace and Aura written by Patrick Boucheron and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the foremost medievalists of our time, a groundbreaking work on history and memory that goes well beyond the life of this influential saint. Elected bishop of Milan by popular acclaim in 374, Ambrose went on to become one of the four original Doctors of the Church. There is much more to this book, however, than the captivating story of the bishop who baptized Saint Augustine in the fourth century. Trace and Aura investigates how a crucial figure from the past can return in different guises over and over again, in a city that he inspired and shaped through his beliefs and political convictions. His recurring lives actually span more than ten centuries, from the fourth to the sixteenth. In the process of following Ambrose’s various reincarnations, Patrick Boucheron draws compelling connections between religion, government, tyranny, the Italian commune, Milan’s yearning for autonomy, and many other aspects of this fascinating relationship between a city and its spiritual mentor who strangely seems to resist being manipulated by the needs and ambitions of those in power.

Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume explore the strategies through which Christian authorities throughout the early medieval world both established and expressed their social position, while at the same time drawing attention to the moments when those same processes were resisted and challenged. Where previous studies of Christianisation have for the most part approached the issue of dissent through the continued existence of paganism and the various Christian heresies, this volume suggests that the experience of doubt towards, and articulation of resistance to, the claims of Christian leaders extended far outside the circles of pagan intellectuals and dissident theologians. The result is a view of Christianisation as far more piecemeal, complex and incomplete than has often been acknowledged. Contributors include Peter Turner, Peter Kritzinger, Collin Garbarino, Philip Wood, Ralph Lee, Richard Payne, Mike Humphreys, Giorgia Vocino, and Gerda Heydemann.

Book Synopsis Ambrose of Milan by : Neil B. McLynn
Download or read book Ambrose of Milan written by Neil B. McLynn and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-12-13 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new and illuminating interpretation of Ambrose, bishop of Milan from 374 to 397, Neil McLynn thoroughly sifts the evidence surrounding this very difficult personality. The result is a richly detailed interpretation of Ambrose's actions and writings that penetrates the bishop's painstaking presentation of self. McLynn succeeds in revealing Ambrose's manipulation of events without making him too Machiavellian. Having synthesized the vast complex of scholarship available on the late fourth century, McLynn also presents an impressive study of the politics and history of the Christian church and the Roman Empire in that period. Admirably and logically organized, the book traces the chronology of Ambrose's public activity and reconstructs important events in the fourth century. McLynn's zesty, lucid prose gives the reader a clear understanding of the complexities of Ambrose's life and career and of late Roman government.

Book Synopsis Treatise on the Love of God: Treatise on the Priesthood by : Saint John of Avila
Download or read book Treatise on the Love of God: Treatise on the Priesthood written by Saint John of Avila and published by IVE Press. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I invite everyone to look to Saint John of Avila [hoping] that the word and the example of this outstanding pastor will enlighten all priests and those who look forward to the day of their priestly ordination.” With these words, Pope Benedict XVI, at the 2011 World Youth Day celebration in Madrid, announced his intention to declare Saint John of Avila a Doctor of the Universal Church. This small book is in some sense an answer to the Pope’s desire “to look to” this great saint by introducing us to two of his most important treatises: On the Love of God and On the Priesthood. This present volume wants to bring this still unknown saint closer to the English-speaking world, thus helping the people of God, especially their priests, inflame their spiritual lives.
