Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter Word and Mind Blindness OF the five chapters composing this little book, the last four were papers read before the Glasgow medico-chirurgical Society, and have been already published in the columns of the Lancet. These articles, embracing the results of extensive reading, as well as my own studies and observa tions, give a fairly comprehensive View of a subject, which has not received much attention in English medical litera ture. I have thought that the publication of these papers in book form would make them more accessible to those interested in the subject. For several reasons, it has been thought advisable to publish the papers in much the same form as they originally appeared in the columns of the Lancet, and therefore a certain amount of repetition, nu avoidable in the circumstances, will be found in each. Excerpt: ...and therefore seeing the letters and words distinctly, an individual is no longer able to interpret written or printed language. With a clear understanding of this definition there is nothing misleading about the term, which is a most convenient one for describing a group of cases, which, however, includes several different forms. All the varieties have this point in common, that the inability to interpret written and printed language is not dependent upon any ocular defect, but upon disorder of the cerebral visual centres. The case just recorded presents many striking points of difference from the case recorded by me in the preceding chapter. Both, however, belong to the group which embraces disorders of the cerebral visual centres, and hence the present case has been described as a peculiar form or varietv of word-blindness. Complete word-blindness involving absolute inability to interpret written or printed language (alexia) is due, as was pointed out in the preceding chapter, either to a lesion in the visual memory centre, which occupies the left supra-marginal and angular gyri, or to a lesion which divides completely the fibres connecting this centre with the visual perceptive centres occupying both occipital lobes chiefly in the neighbourhood of the cuneus and calcarine fissure. But if the visual memory centre be itself intact and the conductivity of the connecting fibres be only partially impaired there may not be absolute inability to read (alexia), but there may be very great difficulty in interpreting written or printed symbols (dyslexia). The case under consideration seems to belong to the latter class. This peculiar difficulty in reading, at once struck me as being precisely similar to that met with by Professor Berlin of...

Book excerpt: How do our brains allow us to recognize objects and locate them accurately in space, use mental imagery to remember yesterday's breakfast, read, understand speech, learn to dance, and recall a new telephone number? Recent breakthroughs in brain scanning and computing techniques have allowed researchers to plumb the secrets of the healthy brain's operation; simultaneously, much new information has been learned about the nature and causes of neuropsychological deficits in animals and humans following various sorts of brain damage in different locations. In this first comprehensive, integrated, and accessible overview of recent insights into how the brain gives rise to mental activity, the authors explain the fundamental concepts behind and the key discoveries that draw on neural network computer models, brain scans, and behavioral studies. Drawing on this analysis, the authors also present an intriguing theory of consciousness. In addition, this paperback edition contains an epilogue in which the authors discuss the latest research on emotion and cognition and present new information on working memory.

Book excerpt: Philosophers of science work not only with the methods of the sciences but with their contents as well. Substantive issues concerning the relation between mind and matter, between the material basis and the functions of cognition, have been central within the entire history of philosophy. We recall such philosophers as Aristotle, Descartes, the early Kant, Ernst Mach, and the early William James as directly inquiring of the organs and structures of thinking. Science and its philosophical self-criticism are especially and deeply united in the effort to understand the biological brain and human behavior, and so it requires no apology to include this collection of clinical studies among Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science. The work of Dr. Norman Geschwind, well represented in this selection, explores the relation between structure and function, between the anatomy of the brain and the 'higher' behavior of men and women. As a clinical neurologist, Geschwind was led to these studies particularly by his in terest in those pathologies which have to do with human perception and language. His research into the anatomical substrates of specific dis orders-and strikingly the aphasias -present a fascinating and provocative examination of fundamental questions which will concern not neurologists alone but also psychologists, physicians, linguists, speech pathologists, educators, anthropologists, historians of medicine, and philosophers, among others, namely all those interested in the characteristic modes of human activity, in speech, in perception, and in the learning process generally.
