Book Synopsis The Return of King Arthur by : Beverly Taylor
Download or read book The Return of King Arthur written by Beverly Taylor and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1983 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revival of interest in Arthurian legend in the 19th century was a remarkable phenomenon, apparently at odds with the spirit of the age. Tennyson was widely criticised for his choice of a medieval topic; yet The Idylls of the Kingwere accepted as the national epic, and a flood of lesser works was inspired by them, on both sides of the Atlantic. Elisabeth Brewer and Beverly Taylor survey the course of Arthurian literature from 1800 to the present day, and give an account of all the major English and American contributions. Some of the works are well-known, but there are also a host of names which will be new to most readers, and some surprises, such as J. Comyns Carr's King Arthur, rightly ignored as a text, but a piece oftheatrical history, for Sir Henry Irving played King Arthur, Ellen Terry was Guinevere, Arthur Sullivan wrote the music, and Burne-Jones designed the sets. The Arthurian works of the Pre-Raphaelites are discussed at length, as are the poemsof Edward Arlington Robinson, John Masefield and Charles Williams. Other writers have used the legends as part of a wider cultural consciousness: The Waste Land, David Jones's In Parenthesis and The Anathemata, and the echoes ofTristan and Iseult in Finnigan's Wake are discussed in this context. Novels on Arthurian themes are given their due place, from the satirical scenes of Thomas Love Peacock's The Misfortunes of Elphin and Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court to T.H. White's serio-comic The Once and Future King and the many recent novelists who have turned away from the chivalric Arthur to depict him as a Dark Age ruler. The Return of King Arthurincludes a bibliography of British and American creative writing relating to the Arthurian legends from 1800 to the present day.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays takes on two of the most pressing questions that face the discipline of Comparative Literature today: “Why compare?” and “Where do we go from here?”. At a difficult economic time, when universities all over the world once again have to justify the social as well as academic value of their work, it is crucial that we consider the function of comparison itself in reaching across disciplinary and cultural boundaries. The essays written for this book are by researchers from all over the world, and range in topic from the problem of translating biblical Hebrew to modern atheism, from Freud to Marlene van Niekerk, from the formation of one person’s identity to experiences of globalisation, and the relation of history to fiction. Together they display the ground-breaking, ideas which lie at the heart of an act as deceptively simple as comparing one piece of writing to another.
Book Synopsis The Cultural Production of Matthew Arnold by : Antony H. Harrison
Download or read book The Cultural Production of Matthew Arnold written by Antony H. Harrison and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of Matthew Arnold as an eminent poet and the preeminent critic of his generation constitutes a remarkable historical spectacle orchestrated by a host of powerful Victorian cultural institutions. The Cultural Production of Matthew Arnold investigates these constructions by situating Arnold’s poetry in a number of contexts that partially shaped it. Such analysis revises our understanding of the formation of the elite (and elitist) male literary-intellectual subject during the 1840s and 1850s, as Arnold attempts self-definition and strives simultaneously to move toward a position of ideological influence upon intellectual institutions that were contested sites of economic, social, and political power in his era. Antony H. Harrison reopens discussion of selected works by Arnold in order to make visible some of their crucial sociohistorical, intertextual, and political components. Only by doing so can we ultimately view the cultural work of Arnold “steadily and ... whole,” and in a fashion that actually eschews this mystifying premise of all Arnoldian inquiry which, by the early twentieth century, had become wholly naturalized in the academy as ideology.

Book Synopsis Matthew Arnold by : George Robert Stange
Download or read book Matthew Arnold written by George Robert Stange and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold is among the most inaccessible of 19th-century poets, a fact of which he himself was well aware. Asking a great deal of his readers, he expected them to share his remote excitements and to follow his complicated intellectual processes. This study of Arnold's major poetic ideas defines their philosophical backgrounds through close and sustained reading of many individual poems. Professor Stange finds that Arnold organized his examination of life around these central ideas: poetry, nature, self, and love. He also considers Arnold’s work in relation to the philosophical and literary events and traditions of the continent, particularly Goethe’s lyrics and classical humanism.
