Book Synopsis Youth and Revolution in the 1790s by : William Pattisson
Download or read book Youth and Revolution in the 1790s written by William Pattisson and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1790s were an extraordinary decade, with revolution in France and hopes of democratic reform in England. Recently it has been argued that patriotic Englishmen hastened to the banner of conservatism, in opposition to the turmoil of events in France. Yet, as this book shows, the English response was far more complex and interesting than that. Youth and Revolution in the 1790s publishes and analyses for the first time the recently discovered letters of three young English reformers in those heady days. It shows that patriotic Englishmen were not automatically conservative and anti-French. Instead, trainee lawyers William Pattisson, Thomas Amyot and Henry Crabb Robinson - who wrote candidly to each other from their homes in Witham, Norwich and London - discussed intently the case for reform. Their letters provide a unique insight into the intellectual and political milieu of English radicalism. In addition, the correspondence provides enough clues to the identity of the anonymous authors of The Cabinet, described by E.P. Thompson as 'the most impressive of the quasi-Jacobin publications of the period', to enable the editors to provide a list of the contributors to this key publication and to throw new light on the excitements and tensions of English radicalism in this period.
Book Synopsis Family Fortunes by : Leonore Davidoff
Download or read book Family Fortunes written by Leonore Davidoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Fortunes has become a seminal text in class and gender history. Published to wide critical acclaim in 1987, its influence in the field continues to be extensive. It has cast new light on the perception of middle-class society and gender relations between 1780 and 1850. This revised edition contains a substantial new introduction, placing the original survey in its historiographical context. Leonore Davidoff and Catherine Hall evaluate the readings their text has received and broaden their study by taking into account recent developments and shifts in the field. They apply current perceptions of history to their original project, and see new motives and meanings emerge that reinforce their argument.
Download or read book Elizabeth Gaskell written by Angus Easson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this book looks at every aspect of the life and work of Elizabeth Gaskell, including her lesser known novels and writings — especially those concerning life in the industrial north of Victorian England. It shows how her work springs from a culture and society which pervades all she thought and wrote. An opening chapter explores her religion, culture, friendships and family. The major works are considered in turn and background material relevant to the novels’ industrial scenes is presented. The process of literary creation is charted in material drawn from letters and by examination of the manuscripts. Her short stories, journalism and letters are also considered.
Book Synopsis Victorian Bloomsbury by : Rosemary Ashton
Download or read book Victorian Bloomsbury written by Rosemary Ashton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Bloomsbury is now associated with Virginia Woolf and her early-twentieth-century circle of writers and artists, the neighborhood was originally the undisputed intellectual quarter of nineteenth-century London. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival resources, Rosemary Ashton brings to life the educational, medical, and social reformists who lived and worked in Victorian Bloomsbury and who led crusades for education, emancipation, and health for all. Ashton explores the secular impetus behind these reforms and the humanitarian and egalitarian character of nineteenth-century Bloomsbury. Thackeray and Dickens jostle with less famous characters like Henry Brougham and Mary Ward. Embracing the high life of the squares, the nonconformity of churches, the parades of shops, schools, hospitals and poor homes, this is a major contribution to the history of nineteenth-century London.

Book excerpt: This book redefines the origins of the women's rights campaigns in Britain. Contrary to the existing historiography, which argues that the Victorian Feminist movement began in the 1850s, this book, by bringing to light a wealth of unused sources, demonstrates that a vibrant community existed during the 1830s and 1840s. Previously neglected, this remarkable group of writers and reformers established both the ideologies and personnel network which provided the foundations of the women's rights campaigns of the coming decades.
