Book excerpt: Funny, poignant, and deeply moving, The Line Tender is a story of nature's enduring mystery and a girl determined to find meaning and connection within it. Wherever the sharks led, Lucy Everhart's marine-biologist mother was sure to follow. In fact, she was on a boat far off the coast of Massachusetts, collecting shark data when she died suddenly. Lucy was seven. Since then Lucy and her father have kept their heads above water--thanks in large part to a few close friends and neighbors. But June of her twelfth summer brings more than the end of school and a heat wave to sleepy Rockport. On one steamy day, the tide brings a great white--and then another tragedy, cutting short a friendship everyone insists was "meaningful" but no one can tell Lucy what it all meant. To survive the fresh wave of grief, Lucy must grab the line that connects her depressed father, a stubborn fisherman, and a curious old widower to her mother's unfinished research on the Great White's return to Cape Cod. If Lucy can find a way to help this unlikely quartet follow the sharks her mother loved, she'll finally be able to look beyond what she's lost and toward what's left to be discovered. ★"Confidently voiced."—Kirkus Reviews, starred ★"Richly layered."—Publishers Weekly, starred ★"A hopeful path forward."—Booklist, starred ★"Life-affirming."—BCCB, starred ★"Big-hearted." —Bookpage, starred ★“Will appeal to just about everyone.” – SLC, starred ★"Exquisitely, beautifully real."—Shelf Awareness, starred

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike many children’s television shows, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood did more than simply entertain or occupy children’s attention. The show educated them in the affective domain, encouraging such things as appreciation for difference, collaboration, self-expression, and self-worth. It also introduced them to the areas of culture, art, and music through guests, trips, art objects and processes, and demonstrations, making it accessible and meaningful in a way that a child could understand. While the educational content of children’s television programming has improved greatly since the late 1960s, no other children’s program has ever attempted such a mix of high art, low art, folk art, industrial production, learning in the affective and social domains, and more, all with a whimsical sense of humor, insight, and a level of interconnected detail unmatched by any other children’s television program. This book illuminates and examines the world of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood through world design, narrative, genre, form, content, authorship, reception and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fam'ly is a heartwarming family saga about the author's large family of seven children, whose parents married young, possessing only minimal skills and education during the Great Depression in this country, and their struggles to rise above their marginal existence. Although both of the writer's parents had been encouraged by their families to acquire skills before getting married, the couple believed they could obtain advanced skills and have a much better life after marrying by moving from their small South Carolina rural setting to Charlotte, North Carolina, a much bigger city. Fam'ly shares the story of the young black couple's struggles amid a backdrop of the Jim Crow and segregation era and a depressed economy to overcome adversity; to better their lives, their extended family members' lives as well as their children's lives; and to make sure all their seven children obtained a higher education so they could have a better quality of life than they had experienced. The narrative tells how the pair's tenacity, strong bonds of love and support from their immediate and extended families--some of whom had followed the Great Migration and moved to Northern cities such as Brooklyn and Bronx, New York--and love and faith in God helped them to overcome obstacles and accomplish goals in their lives. The story also shows that those you help or who help you do not have to be members of your immediate or extended families. They can be members of various family circles in your life, like church, work, or community families. Fam'ly highlights the efforts of an extended family--not just the immediate family--working together to help one another succeed. While the book does have its serious side, it is lighthearted, funny, informative, and entertaining but with a historical, factual, and real-life backdrop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Freddie was born out of wedlock to his teenage mother, Jenny Rakes, and his proud father, Jonathan Baker, who lived on the Ozark farm next to the Rakes. The desertion of his teen mother prior to his first birthday gave Freddie a family of only his maternal grandmother and his proud dad, Jonathan. At the death of his loving Grandmother Rakes, all that was left the preteen could call a "loving family" was his dad, Johnathan Baker. So as you can imagine his dad's shock when son, Fred, refused any schooling past the eighth grade, adding "ignorance" to the "out of wedlock" description of his son, Fred. His mother and her husband arrived prior to the end of Fred's teen years to visit with him and inform him he had three half brothers and a half sister since they had married. His refusal to say more than hello and not even see the "family" set the tone to his mother's life as it related to Fred. Before Fred finished his teen years, the family of his brother and sister, escorted by their half-sister, Penny, arrived unannounced and uninvited on his doorstep. His shock included his first question, to himself, What can I do for them? Of course, he had sympathy for them when he learned of the accidental death of their mother and father. His remaining teen years made it necessary for him to find a better paying job in the Ozarks and caused his life to be everything from horrible to misery. The way this transforms the children's relationship with Fred Baker and Penny Halloran, their half-sister, is an exciting and educational exhibit of the flying teen years. The arrival of the finishing touches to the family includes "fake" parents, nieces, nephews, grandparents, and all of 'em, as one says in the Ozarks. The close chase by a panther after their little sister, Sue Ann, reminds one just how dangerous even a ten year old can be. The teen boys needed little help going from the problem of working students to a wonderful loving Christian family.

Book excerpt: Fred Minnick spent more than a year in Iraq as a U.S. Army public affairs photojournalist, covering the good, bad and ugly sides of the conflict. With a Nikon in one hand and an M-16 in the other, he accompanied combat troops on missions ranging from raids on suspected terrorist strongholds to public relations events including the opening of a school for girls. Some of the stories made it back home, most did not.Camera Boy offers an eye-witness account of the Iraq War from a soldier with a different POV--from behind a camera and typewriter. Unfortunately, being assigned to public affairs did not shield Staff Sergeant Minnick from the horrors of war--including the deaths of two close friends--or from the devastating effects of PTSD upon his return home.It is a story of courage, frustration (with both the military and the mainstream media), dedication and redemption. Includes more than 40 black and white photos taken by the author.

Managing change requires leaders to focus simultaneously on managing the business and providing effective leadership to the people. More often than not, it is the focus on the people side that loses out. This book offers a framework for understanding the issues and competencies that contribute to effective leadership during times of change. Its purpose is to help leaders determine how to choose and move among a variety of managerial approaches--to help them see what's working, what's not working, and what's missing. In this way, leaders can more clearly assess their impact and learn how to meet the demands of both managing the business and leading the people.
