Book Synopsis Comparative and Diachronic Perspectives on Romance Syntax by : Gabriela Pană Dindelegan
Download or read book Comparative and Diachronic Perspectives on Romance Syntax written by Gabriela Pană Dindelegan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume brings together fifteen papers focusing on the morphosyntax of different Romance varieties. It is based on papers presented at the workshop bearing the same title held at the University of Bucharest in November 2015 and is dedicated to Professor Martin Maiden of the University of Oxford in honour of his 60th birthday. The contributions tackle different theoretical issues concerning current linguistic theory (relevant both for comparative and diachronic approaches), including parameters, features and their hierarchical organization, word order changes, the level of verb movement in different varieties, inflected infinitives, clitic placement and clitic doubling, ethical datives, and personal subject pronouns, among others. As such, the volume represents diverse theoretical approaches to addressing a number of key morphological and syntactic issues in the morphosyntactic development of the Romance languages, drawing on modern research methods and current linguistic theory, with a clear preference for parametric syntax. The most significant areas of grammar are well-represented here. The volume will appeal to advanced graduate and postgraduate students in diachronic linguistics, theoretical linguistics, and Romance linguistics, as well as researchers in the fields of historical and typological linguistics, morphosyntactic theory, and the history of the Romance languages.

This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major aim of this volume is to investigate infinitival structures from a diachronic point of view and, simultaneously, to embed the diachronic findings into the ongoing theoretical discussion on non-finite clauses in general. All contributions subscribe to a dynamic approach to infinitival clauses by investigating their origin, development and loss in miscellaneous patterns and across different languages.

Book Synopsis The MIHI EST construction by : Mihaela Ilioaia
Download or read book The MIHI EST construction written by Mihaela Ilioaia and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Romanian mihi est construction (Mi-e foame/frică, me.dat = is hunger/fear ‘I am hungry/ afraid’). While it disappeared from all other Romance languages to be replaced with a habeo structure, the mihi est pattern is in Romanian the most common way of expressing psychological or physiological states. By means of synchronic and diachronic corpus studies, the book investigates the status of the core arguments of the mihi est structure, i.e. the dative experiencer and the nominative state noun, as well as its evolution throughout the centuries. The data analysis reveals that the dative experiencer syntactically behaves like nominative subjects, whereas the state noun shows predicate behavior. As for the evolution of the mihi est structure, the analysis shows a certain tendency toward innovation, since in present-day Romanian it can coerce nouns coming from other semantic fields into the construction’s psychological or physiological interpretation. Could this be another unique trait of Romanian, which causes it to seemingly go against the tendency of most Romance languages toward canonical marking of core arguments?
Book Synopsis Diachronic Variation in Romanian by : Gabriela Pană Dindelegan

This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first work published in English dealing with the historical grammar of Romanian from a modern theoretical perspective. It consists of a selection of papers focusing on the historical grammar of Romanian, bringing together diverse theoretical approaches in order to address a number of key morphological and syntactic issues in the history of the morphosyntactic development of Romanian. The majority of papers in this volume deal with topics in Romanian historical syntax, drawing on modern research methods and current linguistic theory, with a clear preference for parametric syntax. The most significant areas of grammar, namely the nominal domain and the verbal domain, are well represented in this volume.
Book Synopsis Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory 2017 by : Alexandru Nicolae
Download or read book Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory 2017 written by Alexandru Nicolae and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of 18 peer-reviewed papers presented at the 31st edition of Going Romance. Phenomena found in Romance languages (European Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish, Romanian), in Romance dialects (Cosentino, Salentino, southern Calabrese, Neapolitan, and Trevigiano), and even in creoles with a Romance lexifier (Makista and Kristang) either benefit from in-depth analyses confined to one single variety, or are subjected to comparative analysis (dialect vs standard language, dialect vs different major language(s), cross-dialectal comparison, cross-Romance comparison, and even comparison of language families). Theoretical and experimental approaches complement one another, as do diachrony and synchrony. Individually and as a whole, these contributions show how the Romance languages contribute to a better understanding of issues which are relevant in the current linguistic landscape: acquisition, n-words, ellipsis phenomena, focus and polarity, ditransitive constructions, grammaticalization theory, differential object marking, language ecology, event structure, cyclicity, passives and many more.
Download or read book Earthly Delights written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthly Delights brings together a number of substantial and original scholarly studies by international scholars currently working on the history of food in the Ottoman Empire and East-Central Europe. It offers new empirical research, as well as surveys of the state of scholarship in this discipline, with special emphasis on influences, continuities and discontinuities in the culinary cultures of the Ottoman Porte, the Balkans and East-Central Europe between the 17th and 19th centuries. Some contributions address economic aspects of food provision, the development and trans-national circulation of individual dishes, and the role of merchants, diplomats and travellers in the transmission of culinary trends. Others examine the role of food in the construction of national and regional identities in contact zones where local traditions merged or clashed with imperial (Ottoman, Habsburg) and West-European influences.
Book Synopsis Hieratikon, a Treasure of Orthodox Culture and Spirituality by : Lucian Petroaia
Download or read book Hieratikon, a Treasure of Orthodox Culture and Spirituality written by Lucian Petroaia and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctoral thesis about Hieratikon of priest Lucian Petroaia brings to the researchers’ attention, the most important book of service of the orthodox priest. From a historical perspective, the author has carefully identified and investigated all editions of the Hieratikon printed in Romania, from 1508 to the present; from the point of view of analyzing the content of the Hieratikon, he follows the evolution of the order of the Holly Liturgy over 500 years, often comparing the text of the Romanian Hieratikon with that of the Greek Hieratikon and the Slavic Slujebnik. The interdisciplinary approach emphasizes the essential role that the Orthodox liturgical cult had for the assertion of Romanian culture, in the landscape of the European and Universal culture.
Book Synopsis The European Tributary States of the Ottoman Empire in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries by : Gábor Kármán
Download or read book The European Tributary States of the Ottoman Empire in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries written by Gábor Kármán and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Tributary States of the Ottoman Empire is the first comprehensive overview of the empire’s relationship to its various European tributaries, Moldavia, Wallachia, Transylvania, Ragusa, the Crimean Khanate and the Cossack Hetmanate. The volume focuses on three fundamental aspects of the empire’s relationship with these polities: the various legal frameworks which determined their positions within the imperial system, the diplomatic contacts through which they sought to influence the imperial center, and the military cooperation between them and the Porte. Bringing together studies by eminent experts and presenting results of several less-known historiographical traditions, this volume contributes significantly to a deeper understanding of Ottoman power at the peripheries of the empire.
Book Synopsis Southeast European (post)modernities by : Klaus Roth
Download or read book Southeast European (post)modernities written by Klaus Roth and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 20 years of rapid political, economic, social, and cultural change have turned Southeast Europe into a laboratory of transformative processes - processes that have deeply affected the structures of everyday life and that have resulted in a variety of (post-)modern life styles. The contributions by native and foreign researchers to this first of two volumes shed light on the changing practices and patterns of everyday life in Southeast Europe, many of which differ from those in other parts of Europe. The concepts of multiple modernities and post-modernity appear to be highly appropriate for a region in which - under the combined impact of post-socialist transformation, globalization, and EU integration - everyday life is marked by sharp dichotomies and tensions. Understanding these paths to (post-)modernity is relevant for those interested in the Balkans, as well as for those generally interested in processes of socio-cultural change. Book Synopsis A Seventeenth-Century Odyssey in East Central Europe by : Gábor Kármán
Download or read book A Seventeenth-Century Odyssey in East Central Europe written by Gábor Kármán and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Seventeenth-Century Odyssey Gábor Kármán reconstructs the life story of a lesser-known Hungarian orientalist, Jakab Harsányi Nagy. The discussion of his activities as a school teacher in Transylvania, as a diplomat and interpreter at the Sublime Porte, as a secretary of a Moldavian voivode in exile, as well as a court councillor of Friedrich Wilhelm, the Great Elector of Brandenburg not only sheds light upon the extraordinarily versatile career of this individual, but also on the variety of circles in which he lived. Gábor Kármán also gives the first historical analysis of Harsányi’s contribution to Turkish studies, the Colloquia Familiaria Turcico-latina (1672).
Book Synopsis The Cambridge History of the Romance Languages: Volume 1, Structures by : Martin Maiden
Download or read book The Cambridge History of the Romance Languages: Volume 1, Structures written by Martin Maiden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 889 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Cambridge History is the most comprehensive survey of the history of the Romance languages ever published in English. It engages with new and original topics that reflect wider-ranging comparative concerns, such as the relation between diachrony and synchrony, morphosyntactic typology, pragmatic change, the structure of written Romance, and lexical stability. Volume 1 is organized around the two key recurrent themes of persistence (structural inheritance and continuity from Latin) and innovation (structural change and loss in Romance). An important and novel aspect of the volume is that it accords persistence in Romance a focus in its own right rather than treating it simply as the background to the study of change. In addition, it explores the patterns of innovation (including loss) at all linguistic levels. The result is a rich structural history which marries together data and theory to produce new perspectives on the structural evolution of the Romance languages.
