Book excerpt: Excerpt from Let Us Pray: A Handbook of Selected Collects and Forms of Prayer for the Use of Free Churches It cannot be said that Free Churchmen have ever been indifferent to the ideal of public worship. Indeed they endured much suffering in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that they might secure liberty to worship God according to the conscience of the worshippers. Yet it may be questioned whether those who are so swift to appreciate, and so resolute to affirm this privilege, are equally conscious that, since every privilege implies a duty, so this right to worship as we like involves the duty to worship as we ought. When George Herbert restored the parish church of Leighton Ecclesia, he was careful to place the pulpit and the reading desk side by side, and to make both of equal height, in order that, as he would often say, "they should neither have a precedency or priority of the other; but that prayer and preaching, being equally useful, might agree like brethren, and have an equal honour and estimation." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a series of four substantial volumes designed to demonstrate the range of interests of the several Protestant Nonconformist traditions from the time of their Separatist harbingers in the sixteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. It represents a major project of the Association of Denominational Historical Societies and Cognate Libraries. Each volume comprises a General Introduction followed by texts illustrative of such topics as theology, philosophy, worship and socio-political concerns. This work has never before been drawn together for publication in this way. Prepared by a team of twelve editors, all of whom are expert in their areas and drawn from a number of the relevant traditions, it will provide a much needed comprehensive view of Nonconformity told largely in the words of those whose story it is. The works will prove to be an invaluable resource to scholars, students, academics and specialist and public libraries, as well as to a wider range of church, intellectual and general historians. This volume gathers and introduces texts relating to English and Welsh Nonconformity. Through contemporary writings it provides a vivid insight into the life and thought of the Methodists, Congregationalists, Baptists, Quakers, Unitarians and other groups that formed pieces in the diverse mosaic of the nineteenth-century chapels. Each aspect of Nonconformity has an introductory discussion, which includes a guide to the secondary literature on the subject, and each passage from a primary source is put in context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a rich survey encompassing music, art, literature, and architecture, Professor Davies studies the revolution in religious thought and worship in England during the Victorian era. One main trend, the return to conservatism, is revealed in the renascence of Roman Catholic worship, the Oxford Movement, and the search for traditional architecture and liturgy. This impetus was balanced by the drive toward innovation, through the Social Gospel, the Church's confrontation with science, and the new forms of worship sought by the Baptists, Congregationalists, and others. This is the fourth in a five-volume series. Originally published in 1962. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
