Book Synopsis The Beginning of Baptist Ecclesiology by : Marvin Jones
Download or read book The Beginning of Baptist Ecclesiology written by Marvin Jones and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic question, "Where did Baptists come from and why?" has two camps that offer differing explanations: (1) the English Separatist camp produced the ministries of foundational Baptists, John Smyth and Thomas Helwys, thus takes credit for Baptist origins, and (2) the Anabaptist movement is the alternative camp, understanding either a direct connection via lineage back to the infamous Swiss Brethren or an indirect connection via Anabaptist teachings. Anabaptist ecclesiology is very much akin, if not in some ways identical, to modern Baptist ecclesiology. In fact, the Baptist church, led by John Smyth and successively by Thomas Helwys, resembled both English Separatist and the Anabaptist ecclesiology with notable differences between both entities. When The Mystery of Iniquity is properly understood, as Helwys intended, the reader will grasp the logical reasons that the Baptist church in 1607 was akin to both the English Separatist and the Anabaptist and yet differed from both. In The Beginning of Baptist Ecclesiology, Marvin Jones give a fresh voice to Thomas Helwys's opinion that a Baptist church is a viable New Testament church, and provides further relevant material rationale for the conversation concerning Baptist origins.
Book Synopsis Predestination in Early Modern Reformed Theology by : Richard A. Muller
Download or read book Predestination in Early Modern Reformed Theology written by Richard A. Muller and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2024-04-24 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the newest Reformed Historical-Theological Study, Dr. Richard A. Muller delves into one of the most controversial doctrines of Reformed Theology: predestination. Muller carefully investigates key incidents that illustrate the doctrine’s complexity and development by surveying Reformed thought on predestination in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Along the way, Muller challenges distorted ideas about the placement of predestination in theological systems, naïve readings of Calvin based solely on his Institutes, simplistic representations of supra- and infralapsarian debates, and uncharitable views of Reformed theologians as hyper-dogmatists obsessed with their own tradition.

Book Synopsis Baptists and War by : Gordon L Heath
Download or read book Baptists and War written by Gordon L Heath and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Baptists through the years have been certain that war is hell, they have not always been able to agree on how to respond to it. This book traces much of this troubled relationship from the days of Baptist origins with close ties to pacifist Anabaptists to the responses of Baptists in America to the Vietnam War. Essays also include discussions of the English Baptist Andrew Fuller's response to the threat of Napoleon, how Baptists in America dealt with the War of 1812, the support of Canadian Baptists for Britain's war in Sudan and Abyssinia in the 1880s, the decisive effect of the First World War on Canada's T.T. Shields, the response of Australian Baptists to the Second World War, and how Russian Baptists dealt with the Cold War. These chapters provide important analyses of Baptist reactions to various manifestations of one of society's most intractable problems.

Book Synopsis Dimensions of Baptism by : Stanley E. Porter
Download or read book Dimensions of Baptism written by Stanley E. Porter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-12-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together work by J. Ramsey Michaels, Joel Green, Howard Marshall, Bruce Chilton, Craig Evans and the editors, as well as several others. The first section covers baptism in the New Testament, including the meaning of the word "baptize," the baptism of John, Paul's own baptism and his theology of it, and baptisms in John 13, Acts and Hebrews. The second section deals with baptism in the Early Church, including essays on Jesus' blessing of the children, and baptism in the Epistle of Barnabas and in Gregory of Nyssa. The third section addresses baptism in contemporary theology, embracing ecumenical perspectives, baptism as a trinitarian event, and baptism as memorial, as miracle and as falling into and out of power. This wide-ranging volume forms a sequel to Baptism, the New Testament and the Church (JSNT Supplements 171) and makes indispensable reading for all concerned with this topic.
