Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It becomes increasingly important that peace and harmony are finally manifested in Israel-Palestine; and that the Gaza blockade is finally lifted. So it is very important that the future governance of the Bennett-Lapid government is fair and just; and that policies implemented are free from systemic injustices, so that equal rights and legal equality can be manifested in the land. Jerusalem's status is one of the thorniest issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the international community insisting it must be negotiated by the two sides. Israel views the whole city as its capital while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their own state - both sides being locked in stalemate, and a two-state solution having no prospect of success. So the sooner everybody realizes that a bi-national state is the better option, the better for everybody - with citizenship and equal rights in the combined entity for all inhabitants of all territories, without regard to ethnicity or religion. This would combine Israel and the Palestinian territories into a single state with one government, so that business and commerce between all ethnic groups can take place freely and unhindered; the current barriers and Israeli checkpoints being a huge obstacle to this. Hence in the spirit of freedom of movement - for both Palestinian and Israeli people - a one-state solution would be the better option. This would also be in line with former President Reuven Rivlin's policy of a one-state solution, who argues for a unified country that would embrace all people and give the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza full citizenship - so that peace, prosperity and democracy can be manifested in the land. Hence there is now a great window of opportunity for a bi-national state - which the Bennett-Lapid government ought to utilize - so that Israel can remain a respected member in the International Community, and that Israel if finally freed from systemic injustices. Also, it is imperative that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is protected in Israel-Palestine, and that Israeli officials stop committing apartheid - so that equal rights and legal equality can be manifested in Israel-Palestine. To manifest peace and democracy in the land, it is imperative that the Gaza blockade is finally lifted and that all parties concerned start working towards a just and fair Middle East peace plan - so that goodness and decency can prevail in the land.

Let there be Peace is more than a collection of stories about workcamps and volunteering although the reader gets an intimate view into the experiences of anyone who forgoes the nine-to-five predictability of the West for what some call the 'developing' world. They also take the reader into unexpected places: the Middle East or apartheid-era South Africa. Furthermore, simple stories are augmented by letters and emails that chart the progress of the newcomer along with highly personalised musings by the author on the wider context of peace activism and volunteering. Let there be Peace is a book like no other. Tom Farrel, Freelance Journalist from Ireland

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have traditionally drawn distinctions between Ulysses S. Grant's military and political careers. In Let Us Have Peace, Brooks Simpson questions such distinctions and offers a new understanding of this often enigmatic leader. He argues that during the 1860s Grant was both soldier and politician, for military and civil policy were inevitably intertwined during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. According to Simpson, Grant instinctively understood that war was 'politics by other means.' Moreover, he realized that civil wars presented special challenges: reconciliation, not conquest, was the Union's ultimate goal. And in peace, Grant sought to secure what had been won in war, stepping in to assume a more active role in policymaking when the intransigence of white Southerners and the obstructionist behavior of President Andrew Johnson threatened to spoil the fruits of Northern victory.

Book excerpt: Young Susanna doesn't know anything other than the family environment that has been created for her-a system without regard for society or man's laws. Raised in a sequestered home in a busy city neighborhood, everything beyond the front gate is off-limits. The isolation proves to be a breeding ground for abuse, and Susanna struggles to reconcile her desire to escape and her need to belong. The book recounts six critical years in Susanna's life as she comes to terms with her conditions. This coming-of-age story is as much a testament to survival as it is to surrender. Pushed to the limits of her coping abilities, Susanna tries anything she can to bring about the peace that seems always out of reach. In an impulsive moment and an act of daring she contacts a newspaper journalist and finds herself in a predicament she never before considered. That decision becomes the impetus that propels her finally to where she wants to be and to find what was always there. In this honest memoir, the author conveys the deep struggles she must face to navigate her unusual childhood and to overcome obstacles of abuse as well as the isolation that polygamy requires. It is a journey that challenges the strength of hope and proves that the smallest acts can wield the mightiest power. 2010 National Indie Excellence Award Finalist in the Memoir Category What Peace There May Be by Susanna Barlow - The triumphant story of one child's quest to find freedom

Fire destroys all the bacteria that are harmful to the human body and makes the food safe for the person so that he does not die quickly. The greatness of fire cannot be expounded by mere words but by its actual power when used in a controlled way. The fire elements and the scientific applications of the power of fire have been widely researched by the ancient Rishis and Sages of India to a point where modern science has not reached as yet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in and inspiration for this book was derived from the author's background experience and knowledge of adventure expeditions. This valuable experience can be detected within the text of this work but its' attractiveness is derived from the observation of other experienced members of expedition teams around the world. The challenge of adventure expeditions are part of the reason why expedition leaders and team members choose to face unfamiliar situations such as difficult weather or terrain, changes in travel plans or using new equipment and adventurous pursuit in a strange or unknown place. The problems to be faced can of course never be fully predicted. The challenge of this uncertainty is one of the reasons why people become involved in expeditions but it is also the source of conflict and danger. It is the management of these diverse and changing factors that are the concern of the leader, a complex and dynamic process. It can be implied that adventurous expeditions are demanding experiences full of opportunities and potential problems. This later proposition can be justified as a result of previous bad practice and unsavoury incidents within the sphere of outdoor adventure. The indications are that expedition leaders need to share good practice and should possess the required leadership qualities. They need to consider developing suitable guidelines that could give an outline of the roles and responsibilities of an expedition leader. There appears to be a need to identify the desired qualities of expedition leaders in order to develop the essential professional training programmes and safe expeditions that use good practice.

Book excerpt: Empire and Environment argues that histories of imperialism, colonialism, militarism, and global capitalism are integral to understanding environmental violence in the transpacific region. The collection draws its rationale from the imbrication of imperialism and global environmental crisis, but its inspiration from the ecological work of activists, artists, and intellectuals across the transpacific region. Taking a postcolonial, ecocritical approach to confronting ecological ruin in an age of ecological crises and environmental catastrophes on a global scale, the collection demonstrates how Asian North American, Asian diasporic, and Indigenous Pacific Island cultural expressions critique a de-historicized sense of place, attachment, and belonging. In addition to its thirteen chapters from scholars who span the Pacific, each part of this volume begins with a poem by Craig Santos Perez. The volume also features a foreword by Macarena Gómez-Barris and an afterword by Priscilla Wald.

Book excerpt: The potentially catastrophic problems we face in the world today are the result of a massive spiritual failure. Too many of us appear to have forgotten the real purpose we were born for in the first place, which at its most basic level is to love and nurture ourselves and the earth. But we’re not really loving and nurturing when we cause the environment to decline and the climate to become inhospitable, when we keep wasting money and resources by amassing petrifying weapons to fight horrific wars, when we fail to take care of the weak, and when we demonize each other with so much vitriol that nothing effective seems to get done. We are out of control as a species. Let There Be Light: Saving Ourselves and Our Planet Through a Global Social Compact proposes that we “tame the savageness of man” by using the internet to adopt a universal Social Compact—a grass-roots spiritual and political movement that would operate as a Light Network to connect like-minded people around the world in an urgent crusade to reverse the course their governments and societies have put them on. Our Social Compact will funnel the core goodness we all have within us into a metaphorical ball of Light that beams out the conscience of mankind. A conscience that says NO MORE to our current failure to get along and cooperate. A conscience that will overwhelm our governments and societies with the message that NOW IS THE TIME for us to truly achieve the universal desire of mankind, which is first of all to survive, and then to come together to love and respect all life on earth. The Light Network website www.lightnetwork.me is now under construction. Although the Light Network will not be a formal legal entity, its work will nonetheless be continuously felt throughout the world. It will be a relentless force that tracks the issues that threaten our world and then shines its spiritual message onto the efforts that will be essential if we are to take back control of our destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how you can maintain your current lifestyle, but not exhaust our planet's resources? In modern times, many of us have environmental knowledge but we lack an understanding of how to apply that knowledge to our everyday lives. Bridging this gap is what has motivated ecological economist Dr Kamaljit Sangha to write this book. Dr Sangha examines how people can make a difference to the environment by proposing little actions at the household scale that can contribute towards saving our planet. This book examines how to:- Minimise the gap between scientific knowledge and public awareness- Reduce the impact of our actions on our natural environment- Maintain our earth's natural resources- Be happier and healthier by recognising our reliance on Mother Nature and re-establishing our connections with nature. Dr Sangha believes there are a few, very easy steps that everyone - whether they reside in the city or the country - can take to save money, their mental and physical health, and ultimately our planet.
