Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we need the Old Testament? That's a familiar question, often asked. But as an Old Testament scholar, John Goldingay turns that question on its head: Do we need the New Testament? What's new about the New Testament? After all, the Old Testament was the only Bible Jesus and the disciples knew. Jesus affirmed it as the Word of God. Do we need anything more? And what happens when we begin to look at the Old Testament, which is the First Testament, not as a deficient old work in need of a christological makeover, but as a rich and splendid revelation of God's faithfulness to Israel and the world? In this cheerfully provocative yet probingly serious book, John Goldingay sets the question and views it from a variety of angles. Under his expert hand, each facet unfolds the surprising richness of the Old Testament and challenges us to recalibrate our perspective on it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Bible the unembellished Word of God or the product of human agency? There are different answers to that question. And they lie at the heart of this book's powerful exploration of the fraught ways in which money, race and power shape the story of Christianity in American public life. The authors' subject is the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC: arguably the latest example of a long line of white evangelical institutions aiming to amplify and promote a religious, political, and moral agenda of their own. In their careful and compelling investigation, Jill Hicks-Keeton and Cavan Concannon disclose the ways in which the Museum's exhibits reinforce a particularized and partial interpretation of the Bible's meaning. Bringing to light the Museum's implicit messaging about scriptural provenance and audience, the authors reveal how the MOTB produces a version of the Bible that in essence authorizes a certain sort of white evangelical privilege; promotes a view of history aligned with that same evangelical aspiration; and above all protects a cohort of white evangelicals from critique. They show too how the Museum collapses vital conceptual distinctions between its own conservative vision of the Bible and 'The Bible' as a cultural icon. This revelatory volume above all confirms that scripture – for all the claims made for it that it speaks only divine truth – can in the end never be separated from human politics.

Book excerpt: Jims second book, Who Says So seeks to maintain the integrity of the Scripture for its readers. During his practice of ministry, many church members as well as those outside the church frequently asked questions about the inspiration and authority of scripture. Many have indicated that they have heard ministers, especially those on television, declare that God is the author of the Bible and has conveyed every word penned by its many writers. That is the basis of their understanding of inspiration; therefore, the Bible must have absolute authority communicating what to believe and how to live or put into practice ones belief. In todays electronic mindset it would be like God using a smart phone and texting messages to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to write concerning the teachings and practices of Jesus. In his practice of ministry Jim has helped church members and others see another perspective of inspiration and authority. In the quest to see that perspective he suggests read the scripture and let it speak for itself in reaching possible conclusions about inspiration and authority. When we allow the Bible to speak for itself in the context of the history of its development, we realize that the inspiring Spirit of God first touches the lives of its many authors and those bodies of believers who studied hundreds of manuscripts and finally favored 39 texts for the creation of the Old Testament and 27 texts for the New Testament. The spiritual presence of God also touches millions and millions of human beings as they read scripture or listen to a spoken message. In Jims book the focus of inspiration is not on the words of scripture but on the inspired storytellers central message. Also, there are many variances and some errors in many of the stories within the Bible. A storyteller is not dependent upon literary perfection to be inspired. If this were the case, we would not have the Bible today, so let the Bible speak for itself and be inspired and empowered by the spiritual presence of God and understand its message.

Book excerpt: God has provided a way for all people, not just scholars, to know that the Bible is the Word of God. John Piper has devoted his life to showing us that the glory of God is object of the soul’s happiness. Now, his burden in this book is to demonstrate that this same glory is the ground of the mind’s certainty. God’s peculiar glory shines through his Word. The Spirit of God enlightens the eyes of our hearts. And in one self-authenticating sight, our minds are sure and our hearts are satisfied. Justified certainty and solid joy meet in the peculiar glory of God.

Book excerpt: In six closely-reasoned chapters, Joseph Gordon presents a detailed account of a Christian doctrine of Scripture in the fullest context of systematic theology. Divine Scripture in Human Understanding addresses the confusing plurality of contemporary approaches to Christian Scripture—both within and outside the academy—by articulating a traditionally grounded, constructive systematic theology of Christian Scripture. Utilizing primarily the methodological resources of Bernard Lonergan and traditional Christian doctrines of Scripture recovered by Henri de Lubac, it draws upon achievements in historical-critical study of Scripture, studies of the material history of Christian Scripture, reflection on philosophical hermeneutics and philosophical and theological anthropology, and other resources to articulate a unified but open horizon for understanding Christian Scripture today. Following an overview of the contemporary situation of Christian Scripture, Joseph Gordon identifies intellectual precedents for the work in the writings of Irenaeus, Origen, and Augustine, who all locate Scripture in the economic work of the God to whom it bears witness by interpreting it through the Rule of Faith. Subsequent chapters draw on Scripture itself; classical sources such as Irenaeus, Origen, Augustine, and Aquinas; the fruit of recent studies on the history of Scripture; and the work of recent scholars and theologians to provide a contemporary Christian articulation of the divine and human locations of Christian Scripture and the material history and intelligibility and purpose of Scripture in those locations. The resulting constructive position can serve as a heuristic for affirming the achievements of traditional, historical-critical, and contextual readings of Scripture and provides a basis for addressing issues relatively underemphasized by those respective approaches.

Are we doomed to a choice between rigid fundamentalism and complete rejection of this foundational source for Christianity? Bob Cornwall has found that he can take the Bible seriously in his ministry, and yet avoid such controversial labels as "inerrancy" or "infallibility." Taking his vocabulary and direction from the work of Karl Barth, he charts a course toward a serious study and use of scripture that embraces historical-critical methology, but at the same time expects God to speak through the text in ways that will change our lives and minister to this postmodern age.

God's End-Time Puzzle provides a biblically based awareness of end times and helps the reader understand the message God has left for us. The pieces of the puzzle come together and produce a beautiful picture of hope." -Larry D. Maddox Pastor Scripture alone will reveal everything God wants you to know about the end-time. Let Scripture speak for itself so the truth may be known. By reading God's End-Time Puzzle, you will understand: the book of Revelation; Daniel's 2,300-day prophecy; when the rapture occurs; there is no salvation available under God's wrath; the event bringing on the Great Tribulation; when the Antichrist makes himself known, and much more.
