Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the cultural dimension of sustainability? This book offers a thought-provoking answer, with a theoretical synthesis on »cultures of sustainability«. Describing how modernity degenerated into a culture of unsustainability, to which the arts are contributing, Sacha Kagan engages us in a fundamental rethinking of our ways of knowing and seeing the world. We must learn not to be afraid of complexity, and to re-awaken a sensibility to patterns that connect. With an overview of ecological art over the past 40 years, and a discussion of art and social change, the book assesses the potential role of art in a much needed transformation process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores ‘environmental forms’ in terms of their relationships to the socio-politico-ecological transformations currently in progress. Today, the environment is a central theme in political discourse, scientific work and everyday life. It is multi-dimensional: it is a living space, a socio-ecological system and a field of research and action. However, despite the presence and diversity of existing approaches, the ways in which policies address environmental issues remain mainly focused on control, highlighting the techno-ecological, managerial and curative dimensions of public actions. Although public action tends to instrumentalise the environment, the humanities and social sciences have initiated significant reflections in this field, proposing alternative ways of thinking about the environment in its multiple aspects and scales. As part of ‘another approach’ to the environment that mirrors contemporary developments, this book adopts a form-based approach which has been largely neglected by previous studies dealing with environmental themes. The analyses provided here will open up a new perspective on the relationships between people, aesthetics and environments, and are drawn from different schools of research, highlighting the huge potential of reading the environment through forms or, conversely, a reading of environmental forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to the ICT economy, today's world is witnessing a gradual process of transfer and displacement from a society based on the production of man-made material goods to a new society driven by science and knowledge. This new society uses human intelligence to try to solve cultural problems, to sustain activities, to rationalize performances, and to plan, program and develop strategies and projects for the future. This book therefore proposes a multi-faceted framework through which contemporary art, biology, digital science, geology, technology, physiology, chemistry, and philosophy enter into debate and complement each other. It is structured around a number of logically interconnected questions, such as: “What is bio-art?”, “Can a laboratory artist manipulate living beings, perform complex hybridizations, and give birth to chimeras that would coexist with human beings?”, “Do we have the right to use them?”, “Should we authorize research that will allow the development of these techniques, prohibit such research, or fund it?”, and, “Do we have the right to create embryos for transplantation or injection?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of critical and analytical scholarly essays on the music of Ravel by prominent scholars. Unmasking Ravel: New Perspectives on the Music fills a unique place in Ravel studies by combining critical interpretation and analytical focus. From the premiere of his works up to the present, Ravel has been associated with masks and the related notions of artifice and imposture. This has led scholars to perceive a lack of depth in his music and, consequently, to discourage investigation of his musical language. This volume balances and interweavesthese modes of inquiry. Part 1, "Orientations and Influences," illuminates the sometimes contradictory aesthetic, biographical, and literary strands comprising Ravel's artistry and our understanding of it. Part 2, "Analytical Case Studies," engages representative works from Ravel's major genres using a variety of methodologies, focusing on structural process and his complex relation to stylistic convention. Part 3, "Interdisciplinary Studies," integratesmusical analysis and art criticism, semiotics, and psychoanalysis in creating novel methodologies. Contributors include prominent scholars of Ravel's and fin-de-siècle music: Elliott Antokoletz, Gurminder Bhogal, Sigrun B. Heinzelmann, Volker Helbing, Steven Huebner, Peter Kaminsky, Barbara Kelly, David Korevaar, Daphne Leong, Michael Puri, and Lauri Suurpää. Peter Kaminsky is Professor of Music at the University of Connecticut, Storrs.

Book excerpt: The first dynasty to mint gold dinars outside of the Abbasid heartlands, the Aghlabid (r. 800-909) reign in North Africa has largely been neglected in the scholarship of recent decades, despite the canonical status of its monuments and artworks in early Islamic art history. The Aghlabids and their Neighbors focuses new attention on this key dynasty. The essays in this volume, produced by an international group of specialists in history, art and architectural history, archaeology, and numismatics, illuminate the Aghlabid dynasty’s interactions with neighbors in the western Mediterranean and its rivals and allies elsewhere, providing a state of the question on early medieval North Africa and revealing the centrality of the dynasty and the region to global economic and political networks.
