Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Geography, Including Mathematical, Physical, and Political Geography The various things around us, of which we gain a knowledge by our senses, are objects, or forms of matter. These objects all have length, breadth, and thickness, i.e. they extend in three directions. Since objects have extension, they must have something in which to extend. This something we call space. Space. - Space is the possibility of extension; a necessary condition to the existence of matter. Solid. - A solid is a limited portion of space having extension in three directions. Material Solid. - A material solid is a limited portion of space filled with matter. Surface. - A surface is limited extension in two directions. The boundaries or limits of a solid are surfaces. Line. - A line is extension in one direction. The boundaries or limits of a surface arc lines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common-School Geography: An Elementary Treatise on Mathematical, Physical, and Political Geography The progress of geographical discovery, and the numerous changes, political and territorial, that are constantly taking place, have again rendered necessary a revision of this work. Advantage has been taken of this alteration of the text, to introduce into the book an entirely new series of finely engraved Copper-plate Maps, in place of those hitherto contained in it. The division and general arrangement of the Maps remain the same as before, although, wherever practicable, their scale has been somewhat enlarged; while a new, full-page Map of Great Britain and Ireland has been added. The new Maps have been prepared under the direct supervision of Mr. James II. Young, whose long experience and well-earned reputation in this department arc a sufficient guarantee of their accuracy as well as of their artistic finish. The addition of a greatly enlarged Pronouncing and Explanatory Vocabulary, and of two pages of Review Questions, will be found, it is believed, to be a valuable improvement. The Treatise on Map-Drawing, by Mr. E. A. Apgar, State Superintendent of New Jersey, explains a new and practical method of acquiring this important art. The following extract from the Preface to the first edition of the work will show its general plan and arrangement: - "The book consists of two parts. Part First contains lessons on the elementary principles of geographical science; Part Second, a description of the different countries. The lessons of Part First are not arranged in the usual form of question and answer. The principles are clearly stated in familiar language, and the lessons are followed by direct questions upon the text, and suggestive questions testing the learner's understanding of it. Part Second is arranged in chapters, which correspond with the maps. The description of a country is followed by a map of the same; on the page opposite to which are suggestive questions growing out of the text, and direct questions upon the map. The descriptions in Part Second follow a natural order. The position of a country is first given, then its surface is described, and the effect of these circumstances upon the climate, productions, and inhabitants stated. An account of the political divisions follows the description of the physical features, constant reference being made to the general statement of principles in Part First The arrangement of this part of the book in chapters will enable the teacher to assign to his pupils such length of lessons as he chooses." Acknowledgments arc due to many Educators, in various parts of the country, for useful suggestions kindly offered; and especially to Mr. P. W. Bartlett, late Master of the Chapman School, Boston, whose extensive geographical knowledge has contributed largely to the general accuracy of the work. In its improved form, it is hoped that the Common School Geography may commend itself to the Educational public, and continue to justify the generous support which has hitherto been extended to it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematical Geography To the student or teacher who finds some portions too difficult, it is suggested that the discussions which seem obscure at first reading are often made clear by additional explanation given farther on in the book. Usually the second study of a topic which seems too difficult should be deferred until the entire chapter has been read over care fully. The experimental work which is suggested is given for the purpose of making the principles studied concrete and vivid. The measure of the educational value of a labora tory exercise in a school of secondary grade is not found in the academic results obtained, but in the attainment of a conception of a process. The student's determination of latitude, for example, may not be of much value if its worth is estimated in terms of facts obtained, but the forming of the conception of the process is a result of inestimable educational value. Much time may be wasted, however, if the student is required to rediscover the facts and laws of nature which are often so simple that to see is to accept and understand. Acknowledgments are due to many eminent scholars for suggestions, verification of data, and other valuable assistance in the preparation of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Course in Geography, Physical, Industrial, and Political: With a Special Geography for Each State In regard to the maps of the United States, a device similar to the double text in the matter has been adopted, - that is to say, there are maps for general study and maps for particular reference to be used in connection with the State specialties. The general or section maps are obtained by an equal division of the United States into seven sections. These maps are, accordingly, on a uniform scale: their teaching, therefore, is true teaching, and not false teaching, as must be the case when, for example, the map of New England is made the same size as the map of the whole of the Great West. The maps for special reference in connection with State Geography show all the county lines, to'. Gether with the county seats, or shire towns. They will enable the pupil to make what most school maps do not permit a study of the political geography of his State, while for reference these maps will be found of permanent value.
