Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Botany This abbreviated and simplified edition of my Elementary Botany has been prepared for the use of pupils in the secondary schools, where short, or half-year, courses in botany are given, and where, for one reason or another, my larger book cannot be adapted to such abbreviated courses. A large part of the matter has been rewritten, only the less technical descriptive portions being retained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Botany for Secondary Schools There are in general two ways in which the study of Botany may be approached. The first begins with the study of simpler plants, and proceeds systematically to the more complex. The second attempts, first, more familiar forms in their more striking phases, leaving more recondite problems for later inquiry and investigation. Of the two methods, the former has the advantage of being more logical; the latter is certainly more natural, and, in fact, corresponds with the manner in which all science has been developed. In the present volume the second method has been followed. This for several reasons. In the first place, it seems more convenient. The very months when the simpler phases of plant-life are at their best are, by the present arrangement of our school year, practically excluded. But the phenomena presented by the higher plants are at least equally worthy of investigation, and are, as a rule, nearly always accessible. Again, the study of the lower forms of plant-life cannot be carried far without the aid of more or less costly laboratories and appliances; and if the method adopted necessitates the study of such forms, the study of Botany will be restricted to such schools as can afford the requisite apparatus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany: An Elementary Four epochs can be traced in the teaching of ele mentary botany: (1) The effort to know the names of plants and to classify. This was the outgrowth of the earlier aspect of plant knowledge, when it was neces sary to make an inventory of the things in the world. (2) The desire to know the formal names of the parts of plants. This was an outgrowth of the study of gross morphology. Botanies came to be dictionaries of technical terms. (3) The effort to develop the powers of independent investigation. This was largely a result of the German laboratory system, which developed the trained specialist investigator. It emphasized the value of the compound microscope and other appa ratus. This method is of the greatest service to botani cal science and to mankind, but its introduction into the secondary schools is usually unfortunate. (4) The effort to know the plant as a complete organism liv ing its own life in a natural way. In the beginning of this epoch we are now living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Lessons in Botany: For the Use of Teachers, or Mothers Studying With Their Children The author believes that the Simplest botan ical study should afford the means of identify ing plants, as a large part of the student's pleas ure in the science will be the recognition of the things about him. The present volume affords the basis for future classification, which Part II, on flowers, will develop. It is, doubtless, as good a way, perhaps the best, to begin with a Single plant, and study root, stem, leaves, and flowers as belonging to a whole, but the prob lem is complicated by practical difficulties. In our climate there are but two months of the school year when flowers are easily obtained. On the other hand, the material for these lessons can be got throughout the winter, and the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology: Illustrated by Over 360 Wood Engravings, From Original DrawingsIt is by no means indispensable for students to go through the volume before commencing with the analysis of plants. When the proper season for botanizing arrives, and when the first twelve Lessons have been gone over, they may take up Lesson XXVIII. And the following ones, and pro ceed to study the various wild plants they find in blossom, in the manner illustrated in Lesson XXX, &c., referring to the Glossary, and thence to the pages of the Lessons, as directed, for explanations of the various distinctions and terms they meet with. Their first essays will necessarily be rather tedious, if not difficult; but each successful attempt smooths the way for the next, and soon these technical terms and distinctions will become nearly as familiar as those of ordinary language.Students who, having mastered this elementary work, wish to extend their acquaintance with Vegetable Anatomy and Physiology, and to con sider higher questions about the structure and classification of plants, will be prepared to take up the author's Botanical text-book, or other more detailed treatises. No care and expense have been spared upon the illustrations of this volume; which, with one or two exceptions, are all original. They were drawn from nature by Mr. Sprague, the most accurate of living botanical artists, and have been as freely introduced as the Size to which it was needful to restrict the volume would warrant.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
