Book Synopsis Asia's Next Giant:South Korea and Late Industrialization by : Alice H. Amsden

This book was released on 1989-09-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the rise of Japan in the world economy has been widely chronicled, South Korea has been quietly growing into a major economic force that is even challenging Japan in some industries. This book examines how government in South Korea has worked with selected industries to create companies that compete aggressively in world markets. The author views South Korean growth as an example of "late industrialization," a process in which a nation's industries learn from other innovator nations, rather than innovate themselves. Discussing state intervention, shop floor management, and technology transfer, the author explores the reason for South Korea's phenomenal growth. Of particular importance is the principle of reciprocity in which the government imposes strict performance standards on those industries and companies that it aids. The author also compares the South Korean experience to Japan's, and to other emerging nations such as Taiwan, Brazil, Turkey, India, and Mexico.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a country with a dearth of natural resources, a sprawling population congested in a limited arable land transform itself to a modern industrial state within a generation? How could these have been achieved given the lingering geopolitical threats to its very survival as a state, as evidenced by the Korean War and the internecine aggressive posturing of its neighbor from the north? This book looks at strategies, institutional arrangement, role of entrepreneurs and workers in this odyssey, and on how those factors have worked together through effective leadership to transform South Korea’s economic fortunes.
Book Synopsis Re-Inventing Africa's Development by : Jong-Dae Park
Download or read book Re-Inventing Africa's Development written by Jong-Dae Park and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses the development problems of sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) from the eyes of a Korean diplomat with knowledge of the economic growth Korea has experienced in recent decades. The author argues that Africa's development challenges are not due to a lack of resources but a lack of management, presenting an alternative to the traditional view that Africa's problems are caused by a lack of leadership. In exploring an approach based on mind-set and nation-building, rather than unity – which tends to promote individual or party interests rather than the broader country or national interests – the author suggests new solutions for SSA's economic growth, inspired by Korea's successful economic growth model much of which is focused on industrialisation. This book will be of interest to researchers, policymakers, NGOs and governmental bodies in economics, development and politics studying Africa's economic development, and Korea's economic growth model.
Book Synopsis Differences and Changes in Wage Structures by : Richard B. Freeman
Download or read book Differences and Changes in Wage Structures written by Richard B. Freeman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, wages of skilled workers in the United States rose while those of unskilled workers fell; less-educated young men in particular have suffered unprecedented losses in real earnings. These twelve original essays explore whether this trend is unique to the United States or is part of a general growth in inequality in advanced countries. Focusing on labor market institutions and the supply and demand forces that affect wages, the papers compare patterns of earnings inequality and pay differentials in the United States, Australia, Korea, Japan, Western Europe, and the changing economies of Eastern Europe. Cross-country studies examine issues such as managerial compensation, gender differences in earnings, and the relationship of pay to regional unemployment. From this rich store of data, the contributors attribute changes in relative wages and unemployment among countries both to differences in labor market institutions and training and education systems, and to long-term shifts in supply and demand for skilled workers. These shifts are driven in part by skill-biased technological change and the growing internationalization of advanced industrial economies.
