Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the forty years after he left Cambridge in 1864, Leslie Stephen (1832-1904) published thirty volumes of his own writings and contributed to another twenty books. He wrote literally hundreds of articles for British and American magazines and worked as editor of The Cornhill Magazine and of Alpine Journal as well as the Dictionary of National Biography. By any standards his literary career was successful, epitomising the life of the Victorian man of letters. But he was never completely satisfied with his endeavours. He remained self-effacing, adopting the pose of an amateur in a field in which, in fact, he was a superb professional; asking, 'Will not the twentieth century laugh at the nineteenth?' Contrary to his expectations, Leslie Stephen has not been relegated to the learned footnotes, as contemporary Victorian scholarship and Bloomsbury studies prove. This bibliography is an account of Leslie Stephen's entire writing and publishing career, based on the author's detailed research into his books and articles as well as unpublished, and in many cases, uncatalogued, autograph material in British and American libraries, museums and publishers' archives. Emphasis is on the composition, publication history and evolution of the works, including new editions and reissues of his books during Leslie Stephen's lifetime.
Book Synopsis Men of Letters, Writing Lives by : Trev Lynn Broughton
Download or read book Men of Letters, Writing Lives written by Trev Lynn Broughton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-01-14 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trev Lynn Broughton takes an in-depth look at the developments within Victorian auto/biography, and asks what we can learn about the conditions and limits of male literary authority. Providing a feminist analysis of the effects of this literary production on culture, Broughton looks at the increase in professions with a vested interest in the written Life; the speeding up of the Life-and-Letters industry during this period; the institutionalization of Life-writing; and the consequent spread of a network of mainly male practitioners and commentators. This study focuses on two case studies from the period 1880-1903: the theories and achievements of Sir Leslie Stephen and the debate surrounding James Anthony Froude's account of the marriage of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.

Book Synopsis The Science of History in Victorian Britain by : Ian Hesketh
Download or read book The Science of History in Victorian Britain written by Ian Hesketh and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New attitudes towards history in nineteenth-century Britain saw a rejection of romantic, literary techniques in favour of a professionalized, scientific methodology. The development of history as a scientific discipline was undertaken by several key historians of the Victorian period, influenced by German scientific history and British natural philosophy. This study examines parallels between the professionalization of both history and science at the time, which have previously been overlooked. Hesketh challenges accepted notions of a single scientific approach to history. Instead, he draws on a variety of sources—monographs, lectures, correspondence—from eminent Victorian historians to uncover numerous competing discourses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb, O. M., Litt; D It now remains my pleasant duty to thank warmly Mr J. D. Duff of Trinity, who has most kindly and carefully gone through my proofs with me page by page, giving me much friendly and valued criticism, and Mr S. H. Butcher, who after reading the first type-written chapters gave me encouragement to go on with the more difficult part. Thanks are also due to the Rev. Dr Denney and Mr R. P. G. Williamson for their interesting recollections of Sir Richard Jebb as a teacher, and to the many friends who sent me letters. Whether or not these could be fitted into the fabric of the book, it was a great pleasure to me to read them. And I wish also to thank Mr R. T. Wright for the interest he has shown in the progress of the book and for his advice on technical points. Indeed all the officials at the Pitt Press have been most patient with my ignorance which must often have given them needless trouble. For nothing in the Life and Letters is Dr Verrall responsible. He has not yet seen them. I felt it the very greatest kindness and a great point gained when he consented to write the chapter on my husband's work as critic and scholar.
