Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brandon has lived with bisexual lovers Janice and Maureen since his own parents passed away. But now he is all grown up, and his guardians are wondering if they should bring him into their relationship. Who will win the bet? Sultry, sexy Janice or not-so-innocent Maureen? Life is fun when you're the lesbian lovers' boy-toy! ~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~ ?Hello?? The voice, clear and resonant, echoed through the house. ?Hey, honey!? She walked out of her bedroom and leaned over the bannister, making sure to give Brandon a good look at her breasts, which were barely restrained by the tight, scoop-neck top she was wearing. ?How was school?? Brandon shrugged as she walked down the stairs. ?It was school,? he said with a crooked smile. ?What have you been up to today? Where?s Maureen?? ?She?s meeting with a client,? she replied. She made a face. ?Potential client, at least. I think that after you leave for college, she?s going to try to get some larger customers. The people she has pays the bills, with a little left over,? she commented, looking around at the large, comfortable house. ?With some help from me. But there?s no reason why she shouldn?t try to expand a bit. She?s damn smart, Brandon. I hope you appreciate what she?s done for you.? ?I do.? ?I know you do.? She wrapped her arms around him in a hug, savoring the strength of his warm male body, so different from her wife?s. She looked up at him teasingly. ?And you better not be one of those kids who never comes back home once they leave for college, unless they?re out of clean clothes and need someone to do the laundry. I love Maureen, Brandon, but I?m not sure about the two of us kicking around here all by ourselves.? ?You?re only thirty-nine,? he said, his breath ruffling her hair. ?Maybe you two could adopt. Or?or one of those other things. In vitro, or whatever. I wouldn?t mind a little brother. Or sister.? She snorted, and pulled away slightly. ?I like the things which lead to getting children. But I?m not sure how good a mom I would be, kiddo.? He frowned down at her. ?You did all right with me.? ?Yeah. But you were three. Can you imagine me trying to potty-train a toddler? I don?t have the patience. I?d go nuts.? He folded her back in with a low laugh, and she bit back a sigh of pleasure. It was only with the greatest difficulty that she kept herself from reaching down to fondle his manhood. She could sense it, deep inside his jeans. Not hard, not yet. But close. It would take only a push to nudge him over the edge. But how to get him there, dammit? She had worn this outfit solely for the purpose of getting him excited. Her top was low-cut and didn?t even reach to her waist. An old shirt which she had kept through many years, it was thin enough that it was practically see-through. And her skirt barely reached the middle of her thighs. Come on, Brandon. Make a move. I?m right here. Her body was hot and flushed, blood pounding at his nearness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Splashed against the tumultuous Clinton years and framed by the clash between gay political might and anti-gay activism, All the Rage presents the first authoritative guide to the new gay visibility. From the public outing of Ellen DeGeneres to the vicious murder of Matthew Shepard, gay lives and images have moved onto the center stage of American public life. Lesbians and gay men are indeed everywhere, from television sitcoms to Budweiser ads, from the White House to the Magic Kingdom. Combining personal stories with incisive analysis, Suzanna Danuta Walters chronicles this historic moment in our culture, arguing that we live in a time when gays are seen, but not necessarily known. Many consider the new gay visibility a sign of social acceptance, while others charge that it is mere window dressing, obscuring the dogged persistence of discrimination. Walters moves beyond these positions and instead argues that these realities coexist: gays are simultaneously depicted as the sign of social decay and the chic flavor of the month. Taking on the common wisdom that visibility means progress, All the Rage maps the terrain on which gays are accepted as witty accessories in movies, gain access to political power, and yet still fall into constrictive stereotypes. Walters warns us with clarity and wit of the pitfalls of equating visibility with full integration into the fabric of American society. From the playful TV fantasies of lesbian weddings on Friends to the very real obstacles confronting gay marriage, from the award-winning comedy Will & Grace to Bible-thumping radio superhost Dr. Laura, All the Rage takes on naive celebrants and jaded naysayers alike. With a sophisticated mix of caution and optimism, it provides an illuminating guide through these exciting, controversial times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on patterns of intimacy, this book traces the historical roots of parenting practices and familial patterns constructed by lesbians and same-sex attracted women living in Britain and Australia between 1945 and 2000. It foregrounds women's unique lived experiences, as they expressed desire, fell in love, and created families against the backdrop of changing cultural, legal, and medical attitudes to female same-sex desire in the late 20th century. Including almost 100 original oral history interviews conducted by the author, Lesbian Intimacies and Family Life reveals the subjective histories of lesbian intimacy during the period, both highlighting the huge variety in women's experiences, and tracing shifting patterns of relationship and family formation. Combined with analysis of representations of lesbian intimacy in literature, press articles, medical texts, and archival material, the book demonstrates the ways in which changing political and cultural concepts of sexuality impacted on individual and collective attitudes. With a unique transnational perspective, Jennings uncovers how feminist and lesbian networks between Britain and Australia promoted knowledge sharing and helped foster change in the familial practices of each country – such as through the adoption of reproductive technologies and alternate routes into motherhood. Through considering the rise of divorce and challenges to traditional marriage practices in the period, this book highlights how lesbian relationships provided alternative models of interpersonal relations, impacting on broader patterns of sexuality, and helping redefine notions of the family in the modern era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gertrude Stein called it "the only really modern novel form that has come into existence," yet the mystery genre was a century old before it featured its first gay main character in a novel. Since then, gay and lesbian detective fiction has been one of the fastest growing segments of the genre. It incorporates gay and lesbian cultural elements and offers crossover appeal. Its authors call upon a century of development in the mystery genre, while providing new, more accurate images of lesbians and gay men than generally found in mainstream literature and popular media. This groundbreaking study of gay and lesbian detective fiction examines mystery series and historically significant stand-alone novels published since the early 1960s. Part I is an overview that describes how these novels make gay and lesbian life visible and forge new, powerful images. It also examines how they fit into the larger history of mystery fiction. The series analyses in Part II are grouped according to the type of main character (police officer, private investigator, amateur sleuth, etc.). Each section discusses main and secondary characters of that type, characteristic themes for the group, and more. The analyses of individual series cover main characters, themes, plot points and other elements. Comments from authors interviewed for this book play a central role in those analyses. Part III lists series-spanning themes (e.g., homophobia, the closet, gay marriage) and the novels and series that address each of those themes.

Book excerpt: "Loving boldly highlights the lesbian experience as an affirmative model of nontraditional lifestyles. In this enlightening volume, the authors--counselors, psychologists, and therapists--raise some of the vital issues that need to be understood in the context of our extremely homophobic society. Challenging the traditional stigmas held by both the general public and mainstream mental health prefessionals about lesbianism, the authors review over 30 years of research indicating that lesbians experience positive adjustment and mental health. They explore issues never before discussed in print-married lesbians, lesbians in rural settings, and lesbian nonmonogomy."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: A selection of insights into the relationship between men and women Have you wondered: Why women are more sympathetic than men toward O. J. Simpson? Why women were no more supportive of the Equal Rights Amendment than men? Why women are no more likely than men to support a female political candidate? Why women are no more likely than men to embrace feminism—a movement by, about, and for women? Why some women stay with men who abuse them? Loving to Survive addresses just these issues and poses a surprising answer. Likening women's situation to that of hostages, Dee L. R. Graham and her co- authors argue that women bond with men and adopt men's perspective in an effort to escape the threat of men's violence against them. Dee Graham's announcement, in 1991, of her research on male-female bonding was immediately followed by a national firestorm of media interest. Her startling and provocative conclusion was covered in dozens of national newspapers and heatedly debated. In Loving to Survive, Graham provides us with a complete account of her remarkable insights into relationships between men and women. In 1973, three women and one man were held hostage in one of the largest banks in Stockholm by two ex-convicts. These two men threatened their lives, but also showed them kindness. Over the course of the long ordeal, the hostages came to identify with their captors, developing an emotional bond with them. They began to perceive the police, their prospective liberators, as their enemies, and their captors as their friends, as a source of security. This seemingly bizarre reaction to captivity, in which the hostages and captors mutually bond to one another, has been documented in other cases as well, and has become widely known as Stockholm Syndrome. The authors of this book take this syndrome as their starting point to develop a new way of looking at male-female relationships. Loving to Survive considers men's violence against women as crucial to understanding women's current psychology. Men's violence creates ever-present, and therefore often unrecognized, terror in women. This terror is often experienced as a fear for any woman of rape by any man or as a fear of making any man angry. They propose that women's current psychology is actually a psychology of women under conditions of captivitythat is, under conditions of terror caused by male violence against women. Therefore, women's responses to men, and to male violence, resemble hostages' responses to captors. Loving to Survive explores women's bonding to men as it relates to men's violence against women. It proposes that, like hostages who work to placate their captors lest they kill them, women work to please men, and from this springs women's femininity. Femininity describes a set of behaviors that please men because they communicate a woman's acceptance of her subordinate status. Thus, feminine behaviors are, in essence, survival strategies. Like hostages who bond to their captors, women bond to men in an effort to survive. This is a book that will forever change the way we look at male-female relationships and women's lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite rhythm and blues culture’s undeniable role in molding, reflecting, and reshaping black cultural production, consciousness, and politics, it has yet to receive the serious scholarly examination it deserves. Destructive Desires corrects this omission by analyzing how post-Civil Rights era rhythm and blues culture articulates competing and conflicting political, social, familial, and economic desires within and for African American communities. As an important form of black cultural production, rhythm and blues music helps us to understand black political and cultural desires and longings in light of neo-liberalism’s increased codification in America’s racial politics and policies since the 1970s. Robert J. Patterson provides a thorough analysis of four artists—Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Adina Howard, Whitney Houston, and Toni Braxton—to examine black cultural longings by demonstrating how our reading of specific moments in their lives, careers, and performances serve as metacommentaries for broader issues in black culture and politics.

Each chapter entertains an aspect of this question with prose that is spirited, artful, anything but pat. Here is an author who takes neither love nor the power of language for granted, and her book is as provocative and lively as the love it evokes. An extraordinary performance by a writer who renews our wonder at the complexity of human connection."—Bernard Cooper "Barrie Jean Borich wins my respect with her ingenious and original description of feelings which, for many, need translating into a familiar language. She writes about her lover and their life together with a rare deftness, clarity, and antic sense of humor, never strident or defensive, rather self-confident and as if she herself were curious to discover what she is thinking about their relationship."—Rosellen Brown
