Il permet en particulier de les restituer dans des cadres aussi différents et complémentaires que peuvent l'être ceux de la philosophie, du droit, de la sociologie, de la psychologie, de la didactique, de l'économie ou de la biologie. En explicitant notamment la tension qui oppose les valeurs associées au "mieux vivre ensemblre", objectif de l'école, et celles de la société marchande d'aujourd'hui qui engendre la recherche active "toujours plus", les différentes contributions de cet ouvrage veulent favoriser un travail de distanciation conceptuelle sur les valeurs. Pour pouvoir choisir librement ses propres valeurs en tant que citoyen et pour pouvoir éduquer les jeunes à faire de même, il faut prendre conscience des valeurs explicites et implicites qui sont en jeu. Ce livre devrait permettre aux personnes en charge d'éducation de clarifier les valeurs qu'elles veulent servir, d'expliciter les choix qu'elles font et les contraientes qu'elles acceptent.

Trois systèmes de valeurs ont été mis en évidence : un écolocentré typique des SVT français ; un anthropocentré dominant chez les biologistes allemands ; un spiritocentré majoritaire chez les biologistes portugais. En revanche, les historiens se répartissent de la même façon dans les trois pays : à parts égales entre les pôles anthropocentré et spiritocentré. Ces résultats inattendus ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives sur l'analyse des interactions entre formations disciplinaires et systèmes de valeurs sur la nature et l'environnement
