L'accroissement récent des inégalités dans la répartition du revenu mondial n'a, sans doute, jamais été rencontré dans l'histoire de l'humanité. Un Suisse a, en 1998, un revenu moyen quotidien supérieur au revenu annuel d'un Ethiopien. Cet écart, exprimé en dollars de change courants, est de l'ordre de 400 à 1. Il y a vingt ans, il n'était encore que de 107 à 1. Il y a deux siècles, il était d'environ 5 à 1. Le projet de cet ouvrage est de tenter d'expliquer une telle évolution.
