Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents, for the first time in English, a representative view of Gustave Guillaume's thought. The texts, drawn mainly from his manuscript notes for lectures at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, were selected as far as possible for their accessibility, as requiring no prior knowledge of his work. The result is a panorama of the far-ranging and often provocative thought of one of the twentieth century's most original linguists.

Book excerpt: The author describes the influence on the Enlightenment of the intellectual currents that had been active in France, particularly the historical and humanistic esprit critique and the scientific esprit modern. In the first volume he traces the transformation they brought about in religion, ethics, aesthetics, science, politics, economics, and self-knowledge. His analysis of works by Voltaire, Diderot, and Rousseau—including the Encyclopedic—defines their organic unity and clarifies contradictions that appear to threaten the coherence, consistency, and logical continuity of the esprit philosophique. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Constructions in French is the first collected volume to focus on French syntax from a constructionist perspective. It has been written with two kinds of readers in mind: for readers interested in the relationship between the French linguistic tradition and cognitive linguistics, and for readers who would like to examine how constructional analysis can be applied to a variety of French language phenomena. The eleven papers illustrate the insights generated by combining lexicalist and constructionist approaches, focusing on syntax as a dynamic system and using corpus data from a variety of speech genres. The contributions provide new findings about French usage trends (in linguistics and in psycholinguistics), including insights into new, nonstandard and poorly studied constructions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an examination of morphophonology in terms of the interaction between morphological structure and phonological structure. The goals of the study are to propose a coherent way of looking at morphophonology in structural terms while assuming a certain autonomy of the phonological and morphological components. The study assumes the basic lexical/postlexical dichotomy of Lexical Phonology, but refers centrally to prosodic structure of the type proposed by Selkirk (1980) and further developed by, among others, Nespor & Vogel (1986), rather than to level ordering. The specific processes of French morphophonology examined here include certain aspects of prefixation and nasalization, glide information, closed syllable adjustment and penultimate schwa specification, which are reanalysed in structural terms, in contrast to analyses in the literature relying on level ordering. Other aspects of French morphophonology argued in the literature to be rule governed, such as Learned Backing, are reanalysed in terms of stem suppletion. The study thus supports Aronoff & Sridhar (1987), Fabb (1988), Booji (1989) and others in arguing against level ordering, while following the lead of Booji & Lieber (1993), Inkelas (1989) and others in advocating the concurrent existence of both morphological and prosodic structure.

Book excerpt: This volume gathers together for the first time contributions from the most relevant approaches in discourse segmentation developed in the last fifteen years in Romance languages. All these approaches share the assumption that discourses (either oral or written) can be fully divided into units and subunits: just like sentences are fully analyzed with the help of Syntax, discourse can be fully analyzed with the help of Pragmatics. In this sense, the approaches in this volume represent a step forward with respect to the issues in segmentation addressed by Conversational Analysis or by Discourse Analysis. The research questions addressed in this volume range from the distribution of foci to the coupling of gestures and discourse units, the treatment of discourse markers or the interplay between intonation and discourse organization; all of great interest for General Linguistics, as well as for Romance Languages.
