Son objectif était d'établir un double état des lieux, portant d'une part sur l'état bucco-dentaire des résidents et, d'autre part, sur l'organisation de la prévention et des soins. Notre étude a porté sur l'ensemble de la population, enfants et adultes, résidant à l'IME-MAS Gaifleury, soient 89 enfants et adultes âgés de 9 à 55 ans. Tous présentaient une déficience mentale sévère associée à divers degrés à un syndrome autistique, une épilepsie ou une déficience physique. Au cours d'un examen individuel systématique nous avons colligé des indices bucco-dentaires et des paramètres concernant l'état général des résidents. L'étude a montré un indice carieux assez faible. Les résidents bénéficient d'une bonne prise en charge thérapeutique par la dentiste locale. Les indices d'hygiène bucco-dentaire (gingivite et plaque) mauvais, témoignent d'une insuffisance de prévention. L'appartenance à l'IME ou à la MAS, l'âge, la présence de troubles neuro-moteurs, la trisomie 21 et le comportement ont pu être mis en lien avec les niveaux d'indice de plaque, d'indice de tartre et d'indice CAOD. Nous en avons conclu que l'état bucco-dentaire ne serait pas tant dû aux pathologies générales présentées par les résidents qu'à leur niveau de dépendance pour la réalisation de l'hygiène quotidienne. A partir de ce constat, nous avons proposé une démarche visant à améliorer les soins d'hygiène dentaire aux résidents : choix d'une brosse à dent ergonomique et réunion d'information du personnel de l'établissement.
