Book Synopsis Gisbert Combaz (1869-1941) by : Jane Block
Download or read book Gisbert Combaz (1869-1941) written by Jane Block and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gisbert Combaz is among a handful of turn-of-the century poster artists to create a personal style that is still recognizable today. His posters for the exhibition society La Libre Esthetique and his sets of postcards are as prized now as they were in Combaz's day. As this lavishly illustrated book reveals, however, Combaz was also an accomplished graphic artist, painter, and art critic who made important contributions to Western understanding of the art of the Far East and was an inspiring teacher to several generations of Belgian artists. For this thoroughly researched first study of Combaz's life, the author consulted family documents, unpublished photographs, works in private collections, and institutional and governmental archives to offer a full assessment of the man and his oeuvre. Included are a biographical essay and an analysis of his major works, with extensive documentation of his 24 posters.

Download or read book Joseph Csáky written by Edith Balas and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1998 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Csaky (1888-1971), a neglected pioneer of early Modernism, was a native of Hungary who became a dedicated member of the Parisian avant-garde. He took part in the 1912 Section d'Or Exhibition, considered by many to mark the high point of the Cubist movement. He was an intimate friend of such innovative giants as Picasso, Braque, & Lager. One of the first artists to apply Cubist principles to sculpture, Csaky produced a substantial body of work comparable in quality to that of Brancusi & Archipenko; yet he spent the last 30 years of his life in obscurity & was virtually destitute at his death. This ground breaking study includes a detailed discussion of his career, over 100 illus. of his major sculpture, & a translation of the artist's autobio. that provides a wealth of new info. about the early Parisian avant-garde.

Download or read book Jean Delville written by Brendan Cole and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first full-length study of the art and writings of Jean Delville. As a member of the younger generation that emerged during the end of the nineteenth century, he was a dynamic leader of a group of avant-garde artists who sought to establish a new school of Idealist Art in Belgium. He was one of the most talented painters of his generation, producing a vast body of works that, in both scale and technical accomplishment, is unsurpassed amongst his contemporaries. In his extensive writings in contemporary journals and books, he pursued a singular vision for the purpose of art to serve as a vehicle for social change, as well as to inspire individuals to be drawn to a higher, spiritual reality. Delvilles thinking is heavily indebted to the hermetic and esoteric philosophy that was widely popular at the time, and his paintings, poetry and writings reformulate the main tenets of this tradition in a contemporary context. In this regard, his aesthetic and artistic goals are similar, if not identical, to those found in the writings and art of Kandinsky and Mondrian during the early twentieth century.

Book Synopsis The Flemish Primitives: Anonymous masters by : Anne Dubois
Download or read book The Flemish Primitives: Anonymous masters written by Anne Dubois and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth volume examines all the works painted by anonymous masters. Most works of the 15th and early 16th centuries are not signed. Several of these works have not proved possible to attribute to a known painter or to a master with a provisional name. These works, labelled as anonymous, have been little studied until now, because they are in general thought to be of lesser quality, and because researchers have prioritised the study of more important masters. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that these reflect the ongoing production of the time in the Southern Netherlands. Beside the fact that these paintings represent the themes that enjoyed a certain popularity at the time, their study opens perspectives onto the socio-economic context and workshop practice. These paintings could be destined for a broad market and betray different working methods allowing for swift execution in several copies. Furthermore, two of these anonymous works, dating from around 1400 or a little bit later, rank amongst the rare representatives of pictorial production in the Southern Netherlands prior to the technical innovations introduced by the Flemish Primitives. This production is by convention called pre-Eyckian painting.
