Book Synopsis John Dewey's Great Debates - Reconstructed by : Shane Ralston
Download or read book John Dewey's Great Debates - Reconstructed written by Shane Ralston and published by IAP. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confirming his moniker as “America’s philosopher of democracy,” John Dewey engaged in a series of public debates over the course of his lifetime, vividly demonstrating how his thought translates into action. These debates made Dewey a household name and a renowned public intellectual during the early to mid-twentieth century, a time when the United States fought two World Wars, struggled through an economic depression, experienced explosive economic growth and spawned a grassroots movement that characterized an entire era: Progressivism. Unfortunately, much recent Dewey scholarship neglects to situate Dewey’s ideas in the broader context of his activities and engagements as a public intellectual. This project charts a path through two of Dewey’s actual debates with his contemporaries, Leon Trotsky and Robert Hutchins, to two reconstructed debates with contemporary intellectuals, E.D. Hirsch and Robert Talisse, both of whom criticized Dewey’s ideas long after the American philosopher’s death and, finally, to two recent debates, one on home schooling and the other on U.S. foreign policy, in which Dewey’s ideas offer a unique and compelling vision of a way forward.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Professionalization by : Didier Demaziere
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Professionalization written by Didier Demaziere and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-10-30 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professionalization has become a given in the worlds of work and education. For a wide variety of professions, public and private organizations and training and further education courses, professionalization is an inescapable reality. However, it takes on diverse, even contradictory meanings, according to what it represents: a managerial imperative imposed by public or managerial policies, or a set of goals defined by an ideal of service or quality of work. The purpose of Encyclopedia of Professionalization is to discuss the current challenges facing professionalization and, by exploring major research traditions, to clarify the meanings associated with this concept and the various phenomena it encompasses. Three major notions of professionalization are examined: the manufacturing of professions in pursuit of autonomy, the rise of professionalisms embodying notions of a job well done, and the construction of renewed professionalities at the very heart of work situations and training systems.

Iribarne and published by Berlin : CEDEFOP, European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training. This book was released on 1987 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document studies the role of unions and management in vocational training in France. Through an analysis of existing and historical structures governing cooperation and coordination between the social partners and the public bodies responsible for vocational education and training, an in-depth investigation was carried out and proposals for improved dialogue at various levels were made. This report contains three sections: a general analysis, a sectoral analysis, and synthesis and recommendations. Part I examines the role of unions and management in the general system of vocational training in France, including their roles in the establishment of norms and the implementation of vocational training. Part II looks at the implementation of vocational training in the metal and construction industries and in banking. Part III addresses the functioning of the bodies and their dynamic issues and perspectives, including the limited performance and difficulties of the French system. Some recommendations are made for the future. The document concludes with 31 references, a list of abbreviations, and appendices summarizing developments, illustrating organizational relationships, classifying and outlining training expenditures by size of firm.
