Ayant rendu à ceux-ci, et aux Égyptiens d’abord, l’honneur, en mettant en question la suprématie militaire israélienne, Anouar al-Sadate pouvait dès lors songer à s’engager sur la voie de négociations directes, longtemps refusées, fondées sur des rapports nouveaux entre les belligérants. Ce fut le but de son voyage mémorable, effectué à Jérusalem en novembre 1977, aussitôt suivi d’une concertation israélo-égyptienne soutenue par les États-Unis. Philippe Rondot trace les différentes étapes de ce processus de paix qui, entre octobre 1973 et avril 1982, a profondément modifié le visage du Proche-Orient en y introduisant de nouvelles données tant sur le plan des évolutions internes des États de la région, que sur celui des rapports interarabes ou arabo-israéliens et dans le domaine des relations entre les Grands. Cet essai devrait permettre de mieux mesurer le chemin accompli depuis 1973, dans la recherche d’une solution à un drame proche-oriental aux multiples facettes — en prenant en considération le droit de chacun à l’existence et à la sécurit頗 et les obstacles qui restent encore à franchir avant de parvenir à l’établissement d’une paix juste et durable.
