Book Synopsis Rural Settlement Structure And African Development by : Marilyn Silberfein
Download or read book Rural Settlement Structure And African Development written by Marilyn Silberfein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a group of researchers applying their insights and experience to a common theme. All the authors are con-cerned with rural development in Africa and all have focused on the con-nection between the development process and the arrangement of people and their built environment in rural space. Both anthropologists and geo-graphers have contributed to the dialogue on this subject and represen-tatives of the two disciplines are included in this volume. The members of this group have never all been in the same place at the same time, and so have utilized various electronic modes of commu-nication to link their locations around the world. Two conferences were organized, however, among a subset of the whole, in order to generate a group discussion. One of these meetings was a symposium on African rural development held at Temple University while a second was orga-nized at the African Studies Association Meetings in Toronto. Both opportunities helped raise issues that found their way into individual chapters. The audience in each case further stimulated our thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural geography is defined as the study of the geographical and locational attributes, patterns, and processes of crop and animal farming, and related subjects such as farm land, farm-associated human geographers, environmental issues, and theoretical works on the location of agricultural activities. The study of agricultural geography has produced a large amount of literature. This volume records and presents, in an organized manner, as much as possible of this literature. The entries of this compendium are written in a wide array of languages, including English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Russian and others in order to provide the widest coverage possible. The entries include atlases, books, book chapters, scholarly articles from professional journals, conference proceedings, doctoral dissertations, and master's theses. Over 12,000 entries have been recorded here, with the hope that such references will encourage and support the work of students, faculty, and other users.
Book Synopsis African Spaces by : Jean-Paul Bourdier
Download or read book African Spaces written by Jean-Paul Bourdier and published by Africana Pub.. This book was released on 1985 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diversity and complexity of African vernacular architecture remain widely unknown both to the general public and to architects. Yet Upper Volta (Burkino Faso) encompasses an astonishing variety of design principles and building techniques that belie the widespread image of the primitive hut so readily associated with rural Africa. This provides a convincing interpretation of the relationship between spatial organisation and daily activity in Gurunsi life.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso by : Daniel Miles McFarland
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso written by Daniel Miles McFarland and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The change in name from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso has mirrored equally important changes in the country's lifestyle. Yet despite numerous military and civilian governments since 1960, Burkina Faso still faces many of the same challenges it confronted decades ago: malnutrition, drought, lack of natural resources, debt, and the difficulties of industrial development in a region that is often unstable. At the same time, the people of Burkina Faso prove to be hard working and resourceful, and have persevered through many harsh conditions, and continue to improve the standard of living in their nation. The Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso is the second edition of Daniel McFarland's Historical Dictionary of Upper Volta from 1978. As with the earlier edition, this volume provides information on important persons, places and events, political parties, government organizations, economy, and culture. Most importantly, new entries update information on occurrences in the twenty years that have intervened between the two volumes, providing perspectives on recent social, international, political, and cultural issues. The book also includes a detailed chronology of the history of Upper Volta/Burkina Faso, from precolonial times to the current changes in governmental structure and Burkina Faso's relationship to other countries in the region, many in similar situations. The bibliography in the current edition contains 1300 entries, more than one-third in English, versus the 600 entries found in the 1978 edition, and increases the number of English language sources considerably. With such a substantial revision, scholars and librarians will find the Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso a major addition to their collection. The expansion in resources and materials of interest, as well as the chronological and governmental updates, make this new edition an unavoidable part of any complete collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a continuous growth of agriculture be achieved in the sub-Sahara region without inducing irreversible damage to the ecosystem? Until now, doubts have been expressed as to the actual capacity of the soils to sustain a desirable increase of production which can match the requirements of a fast-growing population. Thirty years of investigation and a renewed comprehensive interpretation of research data on soil fertility show that a sustainable agriculture growth could be a practical possibility in a savannah region.
