Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity is by many measures the biggest success story in the animal kingdom; but what are the costs of this triumph? Over its three million years of existence, the human species has continuously modified nature and drained its resources. In Cataclysms, Laurent Testot provides the full tally, offering a comprehensive environmental history of humanity’s unmatched and perhaps irreversible influence on the world. Testot explores the interconnected histories of human evolution and planetary deterioration, arguing that our development from naked apes to Homo sapiens has entailed wide-scale environmental harm. Testot makes the case that humans have usually been catastrophic for the planet, “hyperpredators” responsible for mass extinctions, deforestation, global warming, ocean acidification, and unchecked pollution, as well as the slaughter of our own species. Organized chronologically around seven technological revolutions, Cataclysms unspools the intertwined saga of humanity and our environment, from our shy beginnings in Africa to today’s domination of the planet, revealing how we have blown past any limits along the way—whether by exploding our own population numbers, domesticating countless other species, or harnessing energy from fossils. Testot’s book, while sweeping, is light and approachable, telling the stories—sometimes rambunctious, sometimes appalling—of how a glorified monkey transformed its own environment beyond all recognition. In order to begin reversing our environmental disaster, we must have a better understanding of our own past and the incalculable environmental costs incurred at every stage of human innovation. Cataclysms offers that understanding and the hope that we can now begin to reform our relationship to the Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every cow just wants to be happy. Every chicken just wants to be free. Every bear, dog, or mouse experiences sorrow and feels pain as intensely as any of us humans do. In a compelling appeal to reason and human kindness, Matthieu Ricard here takes the arguments from his best-sellers Altruism and Happiness to their logical conclusion: that compassion toward all beings, including our fellow animals, is a moral obligation and the direction toward which any enlightened society must aspire. He chronicles the appalling sufferings of the animals we eat, wear, and use for adornment or "entertainment," and submits every traditional justification for their exploitation to scientific evidence and moral scrutiny. What arises is an unambiguous and powerful ethical imperative for treating all of the animals with whom we share this planet with respect and compassion.

Book excerpt: How was human (in)equality built across the table? Why were the first great banquets at the origin of the communal goods of humanity? Who, after forcing men from eating bread, wanted to forbid them chestnuts and popularized the potato? The Egyptian food table invented the notion of "symbols for food." The Greek food table invented the notion of sharing. The Roman food table invented the concept of pleasure. How was the person, caught eating and drinking alone, punished? Why did people die less of hunger in ancient times than in Africa in the 21st century? Why in China do people eat round things to show their love? How and why do we choose to eat this way? Why do societies choose to express their unity through their conception of the food table? Did the division in prehistoric societies first occur at the dinner table? Did the first great civilizations make the food table a major political tool with the rationing and banqueting systems in Mesopotamia and Egypt? Were the Gallic food tables swept away by the political alliance between the Catholic Church and the new masters coming from the great invasions? Did the feudal politico-religious system durably structure our food table? Did absolute monarchy have to invent its own conception of the food table with music, dance and architecture? What were the great French revolutionary conceptions of the food table? Did the philosophy of the Enlightenment change our conception of the food table? Did the French Revolution impose a new way of eating with the adoption of the three-fold table service and the banning of cuisine made with mixtures and knots? Does the grammar of our food correspond to a social project? Was Robespierre afraid of the great popular banquets? Did the Republic enforce the eating of potatoes instead of the "breadfruit tree" (the chestnut tree)? How was the myth of Parmentier imposed on schools? What were the great food utopias in the history of the world? Paul Ariès invites you on a gourmet journey from prehistory to the present day. You will know (almost) everything about what our ancestors ate and drank. The prehistoric food table, the ancient food table, the Gallic food table... Paul Ariès shows how the tables of the world remain largely dependent on the tables of the past. This political history of food is the result of thirty years of teaching and research. Better known as a political scientist specializing in ecology than as a specialist of the food table, Paul Ariès has been teaching since 1988 in the most prestigious international hotel schools. He is the author of La fin des mangeurs (DDB), Les Fils de McDo (L'Harmattan), and Manger sans peur (Golias).

The volume is divided into two parts. Part I gives historical overviews, complete lists, descriptions, and summaries for works in film, television, radio, animation, comic books, and graphic novels. This section also includes interviews with animation director Rene Laloux and comic book artist Moebius, as well as comments from filmmaker Luc Besson. Biographies are provided for over 200 important contributors to television and graphic arts. Part II covers the major authors and literary trends of French science fiction, fantasy, and horror from the Middle Ages to the present day. (French-Canadians and Belgians are also examined.) There is a biographical dictionary of over 3,000 authors, a section on major French awards, and a complete bibliography. Many illustrations (!) illuminate this thorough presentation.

Book excerpt: This monograph studies the professionalization of History of religions as an academic discipline in late 19th and early 20th century France and Europe. Its common thread is the work of the French Modernist priest and later Professor of History of religions at the Collège de France, Alfred Loisy (1857-1940), who participated in many of the most topical debates among French and international historians of religions. Unlike his well-studied Modernist theology, Loisy’s writings on comparative religion, and his rich interactions with famous scholars like F. Cumont, M. Mauss, or J.G. Frazer, remain largely unknown. This monograph is the first to paint a comprehensive picture of his career as a historian of religions before and after his excommunication in 1908. Through a contextual analysis of publications by Loisy and contemporaries, and a large corpus of private correspondence, it illuminates the scientification of the discipline between 1890-1920, and its deep entanglement with religion, politics, and society. Particular attention is also given to the role of national and transnational scholarly networks, and the way they controlled the theoretical and institutional frameworks for studying the history of religions.

Book excerpt: Since 1967, the centennial of Confederation, numerous political crises, economic challenges, and international events have helped to transform Canadian society, and will continue to shape its future. Taking these various challenges and opportunities of the past into account, how does the future look for Canada? In Reflecting on Our Past and Embracing Our Future diplomats, politicians, scientists, and human rights leaders including Phil Fontaine, Michaëlle Jean, Ellen Gabriel, Paul Heinbecker, Bob Rae, Jean Charest, and David Suzuki have come together to share their wisdom and experience of events that have marked the country over the last fifty years. Reflecting on the role of the Senate in Canada as complementary to the House of Commons, they consider central issues such as the condition of indigenous peoples, the obligations of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the recognition of two official languages, and the national unity referendums. Contributors also discuss the transformation of the economy in a globalized and digital world, the role of Canada on the world stage at a time of growing tension and an increasing flow of refugees, climate change and the uncertain future of the Arctic, scientific and cultural competitions on the international market, and the future of parliamentary democracy. Correcting misconceptions about the contemporary role of the Senate, and providing a counterargument for radical Senate reform, Reflecting on Our Past and Embracing Our Future offers rich perspectives and fascinating insights about Canada's likely development in the coming years.
