Book excerpt: Excerpt from Les Miserables, Vol. 4: The Idyl of the Rue Plumet and the Epic of the Rue Saint-Denis; Volume II The reader has understood that Eponine, having recognized through the railings the inhabitants of the house in the Rue Plumet, to which Magnon had sent her, had begun by diverting the bandits from the Rue Plumet, then had led Marius there, and that after several days of ecstasy before the railings, Marius, drawn by that force which attracts iron to the loadstone, and the lover toward the stones of which the house in which she whom he loves resides, had finished by entering the garden of Cosette, as Romeo did the garden of Juliet. It had even been more easy for him than for Romeo; Romeo was obliged to esca lade a wall, Marius had only to force a little aside one of the bars of the decrepit railing which was loose in its rusty setting, after the manner of the teeth of old people. Marius was thin and passed easily. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: PREFACE So long as there shall exist, by virtue of law and custom, decrees of damnation pronounced by society, artificially creating hells amid the civilization of earth, and adding the element of human fate to divine destiny; so long as the three great problems of the century--the degradation of man through pauperism, the corruption of woman through hunger, the crippling of children through lack of light--are unsolved; so long as social asphyxia is possible in any part of the world;--in other words, and with a still wider significance, so long as ignorance and poverty exist on earth, books of the nature of Les Miserables cannot fail to be of use. HAUTEVILLE HOUSE, 1862.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: " Les Miserables (Fully Illustrated Unabridged Hapgood Translation)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Les Miserables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo, first published in 1862, that is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. The unabridged Hapgood Translation is widely regarded as a classic translation of this novel. This edition is fully illustrated with classic Les Miserables illustrations by different illustrators. Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, focusing on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. The novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Misérables contains many plots, but the main thread is the story of ex-convict, Jean Valjean (known by his prison number, 24601), who becomes a force for good in the world, but cannot escape his dark past. The novel is divided into five volumes, each volume divided into books, and subdivided into chapters (for a total of three hundred sixty-five chapters). Each chapter is relatively short, usually no longer than a few pages. Nevertheless, the novel as a whole is quite lengthy by modern standards, exceeding fourteen hundred pages in unabridged editions (nineteen hundred pages in French). It also contains what has many times, incorrectly, been considered the longest sentence in a published novel. Within the borders of the novel's story, Hugo fills many pages with his thoughts on religion, politics, and society, including several lengthy digressions, one being a discussion on enclosed religious orders, one on the construction of the Paris sewers, another being on argot, and most famously, his retelling of the Battle of Waterloo. Content: Volume I – Fantine Volume II – Cosette Volume III – Marius Volume IV – The Idyll in the Rue Plumet and the Epic in the Rue St. Denis Volume V – Jean Valjean

Book excerpt: Experience the dramatic and stirring continuation of Victor Hugo's literary masterpiece with "Les Misérables Volume IV - Saint-Denis." In this volume, Hugo brings readers into the heart of revolutionary Paris, where the personal and political realms collide with explosive consequences. "Saint-Denis" takes its name from the Parisian district that becomes the epicenter of the June Rebellion of 1832. This volume delves into the lives of its diverse cast of characters as they navigate love, loss, and the fight for justice amidst the turmoil of an uprising. Jean Valjean, the reformed ex-convict, strives to protect his beloved ward, Cosette, while Marius Pontmercy, the fervent young revolutionary, becomes deeply involved in the struggle for a better future. As the revolutionaries prepare to take their stand, the story intensifies with the build-up to the barricades and the inevitable clash with the authorities. The tension and drama of these moments are masterfully captured, immersing readers in the passion and desperation of those fighting for their ideals. Hugo's depiction of the barricades-both a physical and symbolic representation of resistance-serves as a powerful backdrop for the unfolding human drama. Central to this volume is the evolving relationship between Marius and Cosette. Their love story, fraught with obstacles and misunderstandings, is portrayed with tenderness and poignancy. Amidst the chaos and danger of the rebellion, their bond offers a glimmer of hope and humanity. The resilience of their love in the face of such adversity is a testament to the enduring power of human connection. Hugo's narrative also provides a vivid and detailed exploration of the political and social climate of the time. Through his intricate descriptions and profound insights, he paints a picture of a society in flux, grappling with issues of justice, inequality, and the quest for a better world. The portrayal of the revolutionary group Les Amis de l'ABC and their noble yet tragic stand at the barricades highlights the heroism and sacrifice of those who dared to dream of a brighter future. "Les Misérables Volume IV - Saint-Denis" is a compelling blend of action, romance, and social commentary. Hugo's eloquent prose and deep empathy for his characters bring this historical moment to life, making it both a thrilling and moving read. The themes of love, sacrifice, and the struggle for justice are explored with a depth and intensity that resonate across the ages. Perfect for readers who appreciate classic literature, historical drama, and tales of courage and resilience, "Saint-Denis" continues the epic narrative of "Les Misérables" with power and grace. Engage with this unforgettable volume and discover why Victor Hugo's work remains a touchstone of literary brilliance, offering profound reflections on the human condition and the enduring fight for justice.
