Elle peut avoir pour but de différer une naissance grâce à l'interprétation par le couple des signes physiologiques observés par la femme. L'objectif de notre étude a été de faire connaître le vécu et la satisfaction des utilisateurs pour qu'ils soient mieux respectés des professionnels de santé. Notre enquête s'est basée sur des entretiens semi-directifs ; nous en avons extrait les résultats pour établir une description transversale et les analyser. Ces méthodes reposent sur une adaptation de la sexualité du couple à la fertilité féminine cyclique, respectant sa physiologie et pour espacer ou limiter les naissances. Les couples rencontrés sont très satisfaits de cette approche même s'ils trouvent ce choix tout de même contraignant par l'apprentissage nécessaire, par quelques difficultés d'interprétation et par la continence. C'est pour ces difficultés que la compétence des professionnels de santé devrait pouvoir être sollicitée. De plus, cette méthode, philosophiquement intéressante, apporte un dialogue enrichissant pour le couple et une implication du conjoint très appréciés. Cet aspect également pourrait intéresser le professionnel de santé qui souhaite apporter une réponse globale aux couples. Ces méthodes n'ont aucun effet indésirable et respectent la nature. Les méthodes naturelles sont une réelle alternative respectueuse, écologique, moderne et fiable à la contraception. Cependant il est nécessaire d'être conscient de la rigueur qu'elles nécessitent, et les couples doivent en être avertis. Elles peuvent d'autre part être utilisées comme une aide à la procréation pour les couples en difficulté de conception d'un enfant.

Bien que les recommandations de l'HAS 2004 rappellent que leurs principes généraux doivent être exposés, il a été observé que seule une faible fraction de médecins en faisait la proposition. Explorer les déterminants de la proposition des méthodes naturelles basées sur l'identification des jours de fertilité de la femme, chez les prescripteurs de la contraception. Une étude qualitative basée sur des entretiens semis-dirigés a été réalisée auprès de praticiens ayant une activité de gynécologie. Une analyse par théorisation ancrée a été effectuée. 13 entretiens ont été réalisés auprès de 4 médecins généralistes, 3 gynécologues et 6 sages-femmes. Les connaissances étaient souvent limitées. Ces méthodes étaient jugées insuffisamment efficaces, et inadaptées à une majeure partie de la population. Elles semblaient trouver leur intérêt comme alternative aux contraceptions médicales, ou pour aider à la conception. Il s'agissait d'une pratique restant marginale, où les praticiens se sentaient peu concernés, exceptés quand ils avaient fait un choix délibéré de s'y former et de les proposer. L'exposition des méthodes naturelles en consultation repose principalement sur des motivations propres, et est déterminée par des connaissances inégales et des représentations personnelles. Les méthodes naturelles peuvent pourtant convenir à des personnes désireuses de connaître leur fertilité et d'espacer les naissances. Des travaux pour améliorer les connaissances des praticiens, et faciliter leur proposition semblent nécessaires pour répondre aux recommandations de l'OMS et de l'HAS.

Nelly Oudshoorn explains why it is that, although the technical feasibility of male contraceptives was demonstrated as early as the 1970s, there is, to date, no male pill. Ever since the idea of hormonal contraceptives for men was introduced, scientists, feminists, journalists, and pharmaceutical entrepreneurs have questioned whether men and women would accept a new male contraceptive if one were available. Providing a richly detailed examination of the cultural, scientific, and policy work around the male pill from the 1960s through the 1990s, Oudshoorn advances work at the intersection of gender studies and the sociology of technology. Oudshoorn emphasizes that the introduction of contraceptives for men depends to a great extent on changing ideas about reproductive responsibility. Initial interest in the male pill, she shows, came from outside the scientific community: from the governments of China and India, which were interested in population control, and from Western feminists, who wanted the responsibilities and health risks associated with contraception shared more equally between the sexes. She documents how in the 1970s, the World Health Organization took the lead in investigating male contraceptives by coordinating an unprecedented, worldwide research network. She chronicles how the search for a male pill required significant reorganization of drug-testing standards and protocols and of the family-planning infrastructure—including founding special clinics for men, creating separate spaces for men within existing clinics, enrolling new professionals, and defining new categories of patients. The Male Pill is ultimately a story as much about the design of masculinities in the last decades of the twentieth century as it is about the development of safe and effective technologies.

The Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) is addressing this need in emerging countries by building platforms of exchange and offering training courses. Not only is the programme supporting capacity building of human resources, but it is also specifically focusing on inducing change within the universities, such as introducing new instruments or tools in the area of quality assurance and internationalisation, and addressing specific challenges or setting up new structures in the form of projects in the frame of the training. The ‘National Multiplication Trainings’ Programme under DIES is further addressing the sustainability and multiplication of the DIES Programme, that is, alumni are enabled to implement capacity building in higher education leadership and management in their national context. The articles within this volume of the “Potsdamer Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung” (Potsdam Contributions to Higher Education Research) analyse and share the experiences of such training programmes held in Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Malaysia, Kenya, and Uganda. They all revolve around the best ways to address the needs and challenges in higher education leadership and management, and in building capacities in these areas.
